I can't really remember the exact details but I don't think there was any real scandal or fix around Matthew. It was just one of those cases where a chef has been consistently the best in the competition and then has one weak round or one challenge that doesn't particularly suit them and then they are out of the competition.

Matthew was a very 'classic French cuisine' style of chef and, IIRC, it may have been something to do with the bit where the finalists travel to another country and later have to do a dish inspired by the mad, fancy chef who mentored them there and he was out of his comfort zone. Something like that.

I just had a look and he went out on the penultimate episode after a great chefs table - he did a dish “sounds of the sea” back in the kitchen and it failed to wow so he had to go - apparently he w as distraught and had been public fave to win
