This is a thread for those who have watched the series and are desperate to post and discuss. It seems that the no spoilers free thread is being inundated with those who understably love it. Post away! I love it.

@Gloriia You don't suppose Michael is grieving and quite rightly distraught about losing his much-loved partner, rather than a "wanker"?

I'm quite sure he's upset but he doesn't seem to care about how other people may also be struggling too, seeming to enjoy bullying the jobsworth at work. So yes imo he's a wanker and like most wankers clueless as to why his partner left.

Anyway, it's only a drama but I found MC's awkward security guard character more likeable than smart arse Michael.

FamilynotMaiden · 24/02/2026 18:42

@Gloriia Because he was a jobsworth - fair play!!!
I love Michael! ❤️
And Kacie!
They also both thought the boss was a wanker!!!
Did you not pick up on the fact he had gone to such lengths for Clea re the Christmas room? He loved her deeply. I don't think the fact she went was his fault at all.

Also the prophets said that Clea loves him always or forever.. one or the other, which are not the feelings of someone who doesn’t like him.

For some unknown reason I am watching this is a higglldy piggadily order. Thanks for this thread. I watched episode 4 then 1 then 2.

Forever. That was a beautiful moment.

I think that's a lovely way to watch it.

I hated it after episode 1 though DH liked it. I said it was weird, but then decided to watch episode 2 and was hooked. Love Michael Palin though.
Olive is fab especially when she was swearing about the astroturf carpet 😁
Waiting for series 2 (will there be one?)
Might try Detectorists next

True. Someone who loves him forever but had to run away from him. Some people can be loved but also be impossible to live with.

SyntheticFluff · 24/02/2026 21:48

I thought she left because the wrong 'uns for whom she was fencing the stolen antiques were after her.

The recreation of the Christmas room was the single most romantic idea I've ever seen. DH has categorically told me not to get my hopes up!

Mackenzie Crook really is a sublime writer.

Wasn't it just!

thisoldcity · 25/02/2026 10:32

I think I might be the only one, but I found the Christmas room a bit creepy, though I'm not sure why. Maybe because it's impossible to go back like that? Or because Christmas is a very specific time of year and in the rest of the year it just looks sad?

I appreciate that he did it to be loving and had the best of intentions but if my DH did that, I'd be horrified.

I dont think it was intended to stay like that forever. If Clea hadn't disappeared it would have been put away after Christmas. He's waiting for her to come back.

thisoldcity · 25/02/2026 10:42

@CaptainMyCaptain Yes I get that - maybe it's that fact that seems creepy to me, that it's just sat there all that time like Miss Havisham, getting dusty and unloved.

HatStickBoots · 25/02/2026 12:27

But he is continuing to add little items to it in the seven years she’s been gone. One of the opening scenes was of him unwrapping a little skater doll toy from the 1970s that he’s specifically sourced on eBay and then placing it in the room. That’s how MC introduces this to us and opens a whole load of questions and insights about Michael’s character and behaviour. I think this room has helped his focus in a way, it’s kept his brain occupied while trying to live day by day through the shock and grief. When I first saw the room, I had no idea what it meant but I could see it was an obsession.

Just finished watching this with the family, loved it! So quirky and funny. Will read the whole thread now as have lots of thoughts.

Talipesmum · 27/02/2026 09:31

Just finished watching this last night. Our 15 year old watched with us and really loved it, which we were v pleased about! We’ll try him on detectorists next!

My thoughts -
Love how Michael looks like he’d be a somewhat oblivious figure of fun but he’s really smart and doesn’t let anyone run rings around him - perfect brush off responses to the neighbour. And the pp who compared him to Gromit - perfect!

I felt a bit sorry for Roy - yes he’s a baddie in this, but he lost his sister, his marriage broke down and he’s got nothing, and his dead sister’s partner is in her house and won’t leave and he’s desperate for some money. He and Michael just differ on the subject of clea - Roy thinks she’s dead and Michael is in denial (possibly rightly so though).

The neighbour was so awful with his soulless house and inability to understand anyone different from him. Why is Sophie Willan with him? Loved every time he went over nicey nicey to speak with Michael and got rings run round him every time.

Michael palin’s room was brilliant. Heartbreaking portrayal of creeping dementia.

Intrigued by all the slightly weird things happening. I just thought it was Mackenzie crook quirkiness but there was a definite ramp up what with the motorcycle, meteorite etc. I really want to know what happened to the other 3 jars - will they feature in next series? What else is in the homunculi book?

Apparently Mackenzie Crook writes in his garden shed and it looks not dissimilar to the one in the show.

Also, I googled Pearce Quigley because though he looks familiar and I recognise him from detectorists, I wasn’t sure what else he’d been in. Here’s some pics to encourage those with latent crushes!

I've watched it all twice. Fascinating story, beautifully told. I haven't seen Detectorists yet.

DuncinToffee · 28/02/2026 10:13

Late to the thread, absolutely loved it. Had to pace myself not to binge watch.

NeedWineNow · 28/02/2026 11:48

Me and DH binged the last three episodes. Loved it. We both think Mackenzie Crook is a genius anyway, and this was his usual excellent writing. Wonderful characters, beautiful interpretation and an intriguing story. Just great. We are already looking forward to a second series.

FranticFrankie · 28/02/2026 11:50

On to Detectorists now.
I think Mackenzie Crook is my new crush 😍

We only have his word for it that she was fencing goods.

I don’t think she ran away at all. The whole story is about things beyond comprehension so the reason she disappeared is unlikely to be something mundane.
