This is a thread for those who have watched the series and are desperate to post and discuss. It seems that the no spoilers free thread is being inundated with those who understably love it. Post away! I love it.

Ew. Weird conclusion to arrive at. I don't think she has any sexual interest at all in this kind but eccentric beardy man who is about 30 odd years older than her.

It's OK. I can see that not following the party line on this thread and having a different opinion is not allowed so I will no longer contribute and will hide it. Your "Ew. You're weird" response is quite childish by the way

Lovelygreenpen · 19/02/2026 22:49

If I liked this, what else would I like? I’m looking for low stress, fairly gentle viewing and anything funny is a bonus.

Currently listening to Plum House on BBC Sounds (thanks to pp who recommended that) but I’d like some tv viewing. Nearly finished The Detectorists rewatch.. it’s still great.

I'd recommend Upstart Crow. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07bp62s

BBC Two - Upstart Crow, Series 1

Comedy about William Shakespeare as he starts to make a name for himself in London.

I know you said TV but if you’re up for more radio, there’s a sitcom on BBC Sounds called ‘Alone’ from a few years ago.

Pearce Quigley is great in it (and Angus Deayton, Abigail Cruttenden & Bennett Arron - the latter is particularly funny).

Lovelygreenpen · 20/02/2026 09:58

Thank you both very much!

Lovelygreenpen · 20/02/2026 10:12

A note on Plum House on BBC Sounds/Radio 4, this 2016 series isn’t posted in full on BBC Sounds and appears to start at s1 ep3 according to the voiceover which is odd. MN campaign there maybe..
Still worth joining it part way through though for quirky gentle comedy listening. Slightly gives off BBC TV ‘Ghosts’ just because of the struggling country house setting and stellar comedy casting (Jane Horrocks, Simon Callow and Pearce Q)

DH and I loved it. I feel that Mackenzie Crook is a good man, I love how he introduces elements of the natural world into his programs. How Michael was seen as a weirdo for his wildlife-friendly garden by his neighbour whose house was exclusively decorated in grey and very LiveLaughLove. And the other neighbour with her fake carpet grass and her slug pellets and ant powder, and all the security lighting going off at the slightest movement. Really reflected how sadly divorced from nature some people are becoming.

I’m going to say something controversial but please don’t jump on me. I love Michael Palin as a comedian, a travelogue host and a human being, but I don’t think he’s a very good actor.

Everyone’s talking about the theme tune by Cinder Path but there was some other incidental music that I loved and wanted to hear more of, and to remember what it reminded me of! It was a keyboard and like two notes played simultaneously. Sorry I don’t play music and that’s the only way I can describe it! It was a bit London Grammar-ish.

Ah, I thought Michael Palin's acting was great in this. I was quite surprised as I didn't expect it.

I loved the acting overall and the main actor was superb. Also, the humour was spot on for me. The story not so much but maybe it will develop.

Didn't like the music at all.

What are people's thoughts on the prophets answers? Were they the truth or just false hope? For some reason I found the a answers jarring but I can't explain why

I thought they were compelled to tell the truth regarding any questions. Caveats being to treat them properly, according to Brian (Palin).

I’ve started watching Detectorists off the back of this thread and all your recommendations. I’m enjoying it but is Becky always this bad because I’m finding her very unlikeable. Why does she have to be such a snarky cow all the time?

Also I’m finding Mackenzie Crook surprisingly sexy. Maybe I need to lay off my testosterone gel for a bit 😂

Wallabyone · 20/02/2026 13:52

Ah, I loved the whole series-it was brilliant!
I watched Worzel with my children several years ago and we still quote lines from it 😂

Detectorists is brilliant and I recommend it all the time-can’t believe there are still people who haven’t seen it! I think MC is wonderful-what a clever writer and observer he is.

Becky is frustrated because Andy is full of dreams and wild plans that come to nothing. So no, she doesn’t really divert from that level of exasperation for quite some time - when she does though, it’s quite lovely!
Agree about MC in Detectorists. Might be the khakis tucked into combat boots…..well, it is for me Grin.

@Lovelygreenpen Not a TV show, but a Wim Wenders film called Perfect Days. It is a thing of beauty and you find yourself reflecting on it long after you finish watching it. Bonus - great soundtrack (also available as a playlist on Spotify).

I was utterly entranced by Small Prophets. A jewel of a programme in a world of barrel scraping TV. It deserves every award it will surely be nominated for.

ilovecardigans · 20/02/2026 15:31

Just checked and you can currently stream Perfect Days via Mubi. They offer a 7 day free trial, so you could squeeze in a few other gems if time allows.

Thanks for the recommendation. I just read the description on Wiki, it sounds lovely and interesting.

I think you mean Celebrity Barrel Scraping TV! I may have to watch again to see what eagle-eyed @hairbearbunches spotted. Grin

I wonder how the relationship between Michael and Kacie will play out. Michael obviously has Kacie firmly in the friend zone as he is hankering after Clea, but Kacie wishes she could have more with Michael

I don't see that at all. I see them attracted as kindred spirits in a completely non sexual way.

FamilynotMaiden · 21/02/2026 00:11

@FreeFromWhat Agreed - nothing sexual in it at all and find it a bit of shame that this is assumed or suspected just because of the male-female scenario. One of my best friends who I have know for nearly 30 years is a straight man but that relationship is purely platonic (we are both married now). Of course you can be friends with someone of the opposite sex!
I see it as a sort of father-daughter relationship. Michael didn't have children and not sure Kacie has parents - she said at one point she "lived on her own in a damp and mouldy flat" or words to that effect.

HatStickBoots · 21/02/2026 09:22

Some of the characters in the script are curious about Michael and assume that he and Kaycee have a romantic connection which both deny. I think that’s the signal for the audience that it’s not going to play out that way.

Same.

Kacie looked disgusted when it was suggested there was anything more to their relationship than friendship.

thisoldcity · 21/02/2026 11:50

I'm hoping Clea went off without warning because she was pregnant - we know Michael is a soft hearted trustworthy individual who would make a good dad, but we don't know much about Clea (and her brother is horrible). There's a lot hinting that their childhood was bad after that Christmas when they were happy so maybe she just freaked out when she found she was pregnant... I really want a happy ending when he finds her!

Saucery · 21/02/2026 14:38

I’m not sure I agree. He could be seen as an awkward, quietly arrogant sod who can’t hold down a job (stripping off and walking out in a previous job). Doesn’t have anything to his name apart from a now knackered-beyond-driveable Capri. It’s testament to the writing and acting that we look on him fondly, but a catch and a potentially good father he definitely isn’t. It’s a bit like Lance in Detectorists- lovely when Kate came to find him but his idea of fatherhood was to make up for his absence with all the presents he couldn’t give her before.

To be fair he had bought a present every year but didn't know where to send them. He didn't buy them all at once to compensate.
