This is a thread for those who have watched the series and are desperate to post and discuss. It seems that the no spoilers free thread is being inundated with those who understably love it. Post away! I love it.

Thankyou 😊

Loved it all! Such an unusual drama and well written.

The premise was unusual and for me the script and acting was superb. @the80sweregreat

Binged it and loved it. I was a bit put off by the idea of the spirits in the jars but it was all so well done.

PQ and MP are excellent, so is the actress playing Kaycee (sp?)

I absolutely loved the ending. Roll on series 2... And 3!

SyntheticFluff · 16/02/2026 13:15

The homunculi's gesticulations were very endearing! 😆

placemats · 16/02/2026 13:18

I loved the escapee.

Not sure how it can be continued.

I imagine that the next series - ASAP please will expand on Elliott the boy on the bike

placemats · 16/02/2026 13:26

Elliott/Elliot was superb.

Going to Canada, huge country, and leaving your father behind doesn't seem feasible.

Thank you for starting this thread! Hopefully we can put together all sorts of clues as well and ask questions.
I was wondering how they’d create the homunculi and think they’ve done a brilliant job, they’re so convincing. Why did only three come to life?
What is the significance of the rabbit shaped oil slick? Is it a pagan sign?
The meteorite? Was that just to show the way to the old bird book or something more?
Why is there a theory that MC’s character is an evolved homunculus? We saw the king escape and launch himself at Kacey’s and Michael’s faces. It seemed like a reference to the Alien films, as though he wanted to get inside them and use them as hosts. But surely that would be too grim for this context?

placemats · 16/02/2026 13:50

You're very welcome @HatStickBoots

Great post. I love those theories. I have to go out now. I will be watching episode 2 tonight, Eta Again.

I don’t know if this is reading too much into it, but a boy called Elliott on a bike makes me think of ET, especially given the meteorite. Could tie in with a PP’s mention of Alien as well

spiderlight · 16/02/2026 14:49

I loved it so much ❤️ I wonder whether the next series will involve the other three homunculi that didn't grow this time round.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/02/2026 14:52

Have no theories to contribute, but we absolutely loved this. Roll on series 2! Knew we would enjoy it because of The Detectorists. Pearce Quigley was excellent. Lovely to see Michael Palin acting again. Mackenzie Crook's cameo was beautifully observed. I hope to see a lot more of Lauren Patel (Kacey). She held her own in such distinguished company, no mean feat.

badgersbadgerseverywhere · 16/02/2026 15:24

DH and I loved it. I feel that Mackenzie Crook is a good man, I love how he introduces elements of the natural world into his programs. How Michael was seen as a weirdo for his wildlife-friendly garden by his neighbour whose house was exclusively decorated in grey and very LiveLaughLove. And the other neighbour with her fake carpet grass and her slug pellets and ant powder, and all the security lighting going off at the slightest movement. Really reflected how sadly divorced from nature some people are becoming.

I’m going to say something controversial but please don’t jump on me. I love Michael Palin as a comedian, a travelogue host and a human being, but I don’t think he’s a very good actor.

Everyone’s talking about the theme tune by Cinder Path but there was some other incidental music that I loved and wanted to hear more of, and to remember what it reminded me of! It was a keyboard and like two notes played simultaneously. Sorry I don’t play music and that’s the only way I can describe it! It was a bit London Grammar-ish.

the80sweregreat · 16/02/2026 15:24

I’d like to know why Clea would take off on Christmas Eve and not tell anyone. It felt a bit cruel. I do need to watch the last episode again , there was so much going on and I felt sad when they had to do what they did to the prophets ;(

Noshadelamp · 16/02/2026 15:41

What is the significance of the rabbit shaped oil slick? Is it a pagan sign? @HatStickBoots

I think it's a hare. Hares are thought to be very magical, eg symbolic of Easter and therefore rebirth, prosperity, fertility for example.
They are also thought to have connections to the Otherworld and the ability to shapeshift into humans.

Screamingabdabz · 16/02/2026 15:57

I absolutely binged and loved it. Great cast and scripting. Agree the Palin was the only bum note, but it didn’t detract too much.

Glad there will be a second series but will be interested to see how they will do it seeing as the neighbours and the house itself was so integral to the story (love Jon Pointing). Some great questions posed by pp.

placemats · 16/02/2026 15:59

Yes it's a hare, not a rabbit. Hares are magical creatures in folklore and beautiful if you spot one in real life.

I didn't know there was a theory but said this to my dh!
My personal theory is based on how he looks out from rather large and thick glasses (like a jar) and keeps stroking his long ponytail which could be reminiscent of the vestigial tails of the humunculi.
There's probably other little signs to look out for in a second viewing!

placemats · 16/02/2026 16:08

I'd like to think the second series starts with Clea's arrival in Heathrow met by her brother. She's the one who has bought the house. As she arrives, PQ is in departures for somewhere in Canada.

Maybe then we'll get Clea's background story and she's also a huge fan of Neighbours.

DH and I binge watched this yesterday. It was one of the next things I have seen in a long time. Couple of things I noticed/thought

Michaels Dad said the six vials of poison were for each homniculus but Michael only used one
Definitely going to see them grow the other three in the next series
The teaser about Michael holding an egg and Clea walking away with the bike..
The bit where the homniculus jumped on them was too similar to Alien for my liking
I thought the creatures were saver at first but liked them more as they grew
Vic is Clea I presume??

CollaterlieSistersSister · 16/02/2026 16:16

Very much not in agreement that Michael Palin was a bum note!

I thought he was wonderful, matched the tone perfectly. And also totally believable that he had such an exotic past, trying his best to keep some sparkle and spirit alive surrounded by mainly sleeping residents.

I thought the whole thing was perfectly cast. Loved it.

Saucery · 16/02/2026 16:17

I loved the way the growth of the homunculi sparked off some little everyday ‘magic’ happenings - the mugger/Father Christmas incident, the kids finding an abandoned van full of loose change, the meteorite…….perhaps even his Dad’s luck at winning competitions.
There wasn’t a wasted scene or piece of dialogue, it was a sublime 3 hours of tv.

I don’t think Michael will make it to Canada just yet (next series). Roy may well let him keep the house now he’s got the money he needs. The lottery numbers will also depend on which lottery was asked about; could be £1000 on the postcode lottery, making that part in Neighbours that much more difficult to obtain.
I think Clea either left because she was pregnant and Michael wasn’t on board with that, or she terminated a pregnancy and Michael was upset and they had a terrible argument about it.
