This is a thread for those who have watched the series and are desperate to post and discuss. It seems that the no spoilers free thread is being inundated with those who understably love it. Post away! I love it.

The neighbours are the odd couple.
Clive had a bird book and I did wonder if it was the one worth mega bucks at one stage.

Yes odd couples neighbours start young. And never change as they age.

I love stop start animation. The opening of the winter Olympics on the BBC has it.

I love it too. Shaun the Sheep movie is fantastic!

Ohhhh, the empty jars! Maybe those did grow, but not in the jars, in humans around……like the police….

DH and I loved it. I feel that Mackenzie Crook is a good man, I love how he introduces elements of the natural world into his programs. How Michael was seen as a weirdo for his wildlife-friendly garden by his neighbour whose house was exclusively decorated in grey and very LiveLaughLove. And the other neighbour with her fake carpet grass and her slug pellets and ant powder, and all the security lighting going off at the slightest movement. Really reflected how sadly divorced from nature some people are becoming.

I’m going to say something controversial but please don’t jump on me. I love Michael Palin as a comedian, a travelogue host and a human being, but I don’t think he’s a very good actor.

Everyone’s talking about the theme tune by Cinder Path but there was some other incidental music that I loved and wanted to hear more of, and to remember what it reminded me of! It was a keyboard and like two notes played simultaneously. Sorry I don’t play music and that’s the only way I can describe it! It was a bit London Grammar-ish.

You obviously never saw GBH, the 1990s Channel 4 comedy-drama. Michael Palin was frighteningly good in that, as was Robert Lindsay.

In fact, now I’ve brought it up, I really want to watch it again, thirty-odd years later! 🤔

Saucery · 17/02/2026 16:55

I’ve looked for GBH in the past, might need to see if it’s streaming anywhere.
Michael Palin is quite a versatile actor - Brazil (where the residual “aww, it’s that Nice Python!” really has to work hard against the character), A Fish Called Wanda, Remember Me.

JoanChitty · 17/02/2026 17:03

Don’t forget the fabulous “A Private Function” @Saucery !
I also liked the name of the cafe, Pickles the name of the dog that found the missing World Cup as that was found quite close to where I used to live in Upper Norwood in south london .

Actually it’s on 4OD. Yay!

that’s my weekend sorted 🥳

I think that the boy on the bike is a guardian Angel.

Yes - this was my first thought when he appeared on the screen. Can’t really say why though, but he’s definitely taking a keen interest in Michael.

the80sweregreat · 17/02/2026 18:22

Anyway recall a sit com set in a pub called ‘ early doors’ ? They used to have a pub quiz and the dog’s name ( Pickles ) used to be one of the questions every week! Lol

JoanChitty · 17/02/2026 19:06

@the80sweregreat Yes! Early Doors was a great sitcom. We watched it all again recently. Pickles was the only answer that the characters Eddie and Joan got right in the quiz!

It was really good. The writer (Alan Bleasdale?) got a lot of stick after the first episode for turning his back on his principles - then there was the big twist!

RupertTheBlackCat · 17/02/2026 19:23

I thought it was dreadful - sorry!

placemats · 17/02/2026 19:26

Loving all the AIBU that could possibly arise from this series.

Overgrown garden - do I talk to them about it?
Neighbour sneaks into my back garden when I'm out at work.
Neighbour's teenage child rides around on his bike constantly and doesn't speak!!!
There's a bloody great big oil slick on the road that looks like a rabbit, although neighbour says it looks like a hare. Who is right here?

Obviously blurry photos and dodgy diagrams would be included.

Eta. Update: A fuck ton of horse manure has just been delivered to the messy over grown garden that I most certainly haven't sneaked into.

Bloody loved it!😻

I think Bev is trying to get pregnant

2026onwardsandup · 17/02/2026 21:58

Just finished it last night . There was definitely a quiet gentleness about it , similar to the Detectorists .
The characters were all so quirky and well rounded . I do hope there are more series to come .

I can see that people would either really love it or hate it , but I definitely loved it .

Would love to find out more about Clea and why she left , especially on Christmas Eve . I think the clues about Canada were leading us there .
Re the lottery tickets , they might win with others ( who had the same numbers ) and have to share a big prize . As it would be a different second series if they were multi millionaires .

I think the second series would start with both Michael and Kacey having done their travels to Australia and Canada . Would miss the bonkers neighbours and the DIY store otherwise .

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/02/2026 22:04

I agree. I dont think changing location would work.

TitsInAbsentia · 17/02/2026 23:26

I loved it!

The police were called Juliet Bravo - which was a tv show from 1980-1985
But the other was Constable Paul Sargeant and I've no idea what that relates to, google gives me nothing!

placemats · 18/02/2026 00:07

Juliet and Bravo is part of international alphabet code. NATO alphabet.

I think i watched bits of this differently to many of you.
The police were watching him because he was the one who saw the hoist van but didn't report it. - they thought that was odd. Then they see him doing loads of odd things, ending up with them being sent to his house.
Clea had depression- it was alluded to loads. She eventually disappeared. As people do. Michael couldn't move on as he had no answers.
Some homunculi didn't grow. They killed the others so they weren't discovered. They would have died anyway.

I didn't get the Eliott ET ref. I think Clea asked him to keep an eye on Michael. Or she has stayed in touch with him....but given her letters to dad - probably not. I couldn't work out the hug.

I don't want another series. I'd rather it was left as is.

TansySorrel · 18/02/2026 02:10

HatStickBoots · 16/02/2026 21:14

I’ll have to rewatch it and take more notice of the police!
Im puzzled by what Michael says was his reason for recreating that 1970s Christmas (anyone remember the year?). He said it was the last time she was truly happy. But why? It looked like the mid 70s to me and I had the same Girls World and the little skater girl. Was it the last year that she believed in Father Christmas and is he really real in this fantasy? Michael must have been desperate to make her feel better and didn’t succeed and his life seems to have stopped at that point when she didn’t come home and he reminded me of Miss Havisham from Great Expectations for a while.

Edited: I may be misremembering… perhaps it was just her happiest Christmas but that doesn’t mean the successive ones weren’t or that her mh was suffering.. I just assumed that because of her disappearance and the fact that she loves him but won’t be coming home.

Edited

Maybe after the last Christmas she was truly happy their mother disappeared or died or their father, or both.
Maybe she did see the 70s room without Michael realising and it sent her over the edge

I’d say the joke was just that his name is Constable Sergeant.

Am I the only one upset about the homunculi being brought to life only to be murdered?

That was the lead character's call sign on the show - JB or Juliet Bravo.

Michael Palin's character did talk about this in the show when he stressed that they're not people, and said something about them just being manifestations of spirits or something - he clearly said it to stop any concerns about inhumane actions towards them. It helped me stop feeling sorry for them!
