I can't wait the trailer looks so good.

Rupert has the rep for being a serial shagger, but surely Tony has bonked more of the characters than Rupert has?

8misskitty8 · 22/05/2026 15:09

Omg the swimming pool. 🙈

Tony at the end 😮Hope it was a clean pair the props department used.

Scorchio84 · 22/05/2026 16:35

Netaporter · 22/05/2026 09:46

😂😂😂

The question is, when he goes full frontal later in the series will we see the infamous Dyer “I’ve got one huge bollock?” 🙈

(He talks about it a lot so I don’t think this is a spoiler)

Oh? I was thinking maybe that was it? He was ostensibly in the nip so yeah time will tell..

& the worst part is I don't know if I'm disappointed or not? 😂🙈

The whole underwater scene I thought was a nod to ‘The stud’ starring Joan Collins and Oliver Tobias which was was filmed at the sanctuary spa in Covent Garden…Featuring quite gaudy pool set up.

Apparently it’s ep 8 or 9 so it’ll be an early birthday present for me as those eps aren’t released until nov/dec. Boo.

DH has pointed out the similarities between Rupert and Buzz Lightyear, particularly around the eyes. I can’t unsee it now! 😆

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 22/05/2026 18:08

I just so love this. James Vereker is so awful. The actor is amazing. And Danny Dyer and Katherine Parkinson are completely believable as star crossed lovers you’d think they were a real couple

binliner · 22/05/2026 18:09

The acting is brilliant

Oliver Chris is fabulous-he does an excellent job!

Do you think Oliver Chris ever thinks ‘why am I always cast as the wanker husband’ ? 😂 He essentially plays the same character (very well) in Motherland (where his Dad is played by David Calder aka Reverend Penny in Rivals)

AnneShirleysNewDress · 22/05/2026 22:32

Is Ingrid Oliver playing Clara (the woman from channel 4)? I can’t decide if it’s her.

Ah, of course that's where I recognise the vicar from!! It hadn't registered he was also off Motherland!

It is her. She’s very good but not nearly enough on telly I think. Married to the lovely Richard Osman too.

Loopytiles · 23/05/2026 07:35

If was an actor with a niche in playing useless or outright wanker husbands would role with it!

He was great fun in Green Wing.

I think he was also Lysander in Midsummer Night’s Dream when Gwendoline Christie played Titania, think a version that was screened after lockdown. I watched it on my phone so can’t be sure, but was either him or someone copying him! Great casting for that role.

Snapespeare · 23/05/2026 08:44

I'm worried for Valerie. I know she's an object of fun, but she's looked down on by the Rutshires for social climbing and getting things wrong. When Freddie and Lizzie inevitably end up together, what comfort is there for Mousie?
I'd give her a much younger, fallen on hard times, massive death-duties to fund baronet from a visiting Polo team who woos her with a title on the basis Freddie will look after her on the divorce.

Snapespeare · 23/05/2026 08:46

Also, my heart is firmly for Charles at this stage. I will ride into battle for him.

Hear me out… I wouldn’t be surprised if she ends up having an affair with Monica. The last episode was hinting at something like that in Monica’s past re. The scene with Dame Enid. Rivals hasn’t done a lesbian storyline yet and it would suit Monica’s social climbing so I can see it happening.

Notonthestairs · 23/05/2026 10:14

Monica does have a good storyline - but it doesn’t involve Valerie (who is almost certainly plain old homophobic, rather suppressing any secret desires)

BestIsWest · 23/05/2026 10:32

I have much more sympathy for Valerie in the TV version than I did in the book.

LittleBearPad · 23/05/2026 10:36

Loved the latest episode and really wish more than one had been released! Like Rupert more and more after being a bit Hmm about the casting and Charles is just wonderful.

Yes, the writers have softened her character for tv - in the books she had very clear biases based on status and/or looks. And she took a lot of that out on Lizzie.

The controlling side of her personality is played for laughs in the adaptation whereas it was actually quite unpleasant for Freddie in the book version.

Femalefootyfan1 · 23/05/2026 11:16

Bloody brilliant! Love the books and adore the characters, I’m struggling to find any differences in them between the book and the tv show. Even DH is really enjoying it and I never thought I’d say that.
Love Charles, he’s so sweet and Danny Dyer is a revelation, love him as Fred Fred, can’t wait for next Friday for the next episode.

Notonthestairs · 23/05/2026 12:24

I think they've given Maud a much clearer reason for her behaviour - maybe it was in the book and I missed it but I read Maud as being wholly selfish on the page as well as being weirdly competitive with Taggie. On screen you can understand how difficult it was to be married to Declan and how much she had given up to facilitate him (rather than just being lazy).

Similarly Monica has been granted a much more interesting & clever character - she was always capable but in this she has much more of a hinterland than dogs/gardening/opera.

Yes, I am overthinking it.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 23/05/2026 12:25

For those that are interested, many won’t be, Danny Dyer and Emily Atack have a new game show on ITV X I’m at a loose end so just trying it now. Nobody’s Fool.

Go online and watch a young Oliver Chris in Green Wing as a cheeky medical student - he's excellent in that too!
