If was an actor with a niche in playing useless or outright wanker husbands would role with it!

He was great fun in Green Wing.

I think he was also Lysander in Midsummer Night’s Dream when Gwendoline Christie played Titania, think a version that was screened after lockdown. I watched it on my phone so can’t be sure, but was either him or someone copying him! Great casting for that role.

Yes, I saw this live at the Bridge Theatre, and it was a wonderful production.
(Also, I'm now sounding like an Oliver Chris stalker!).

Do you think Oliver Chris ever thinks ‘why am I always cast as the wanker husband’ ? 😂 He essentially plays the same character (very well) in Motherland (where his Dad is played by David Calder aka Reverend Penny in Rivals)

Ha, yes 😂.

He was great in Green Wing and Bluestone 42 as well. He was also in One man, two govnors with the NT
which was shown over Covid.

Scorpion84 · 23/05/2026 13:39

Oliver Chris was also in the first series of the uk office and was brilliant in that too

Stowickthevast · 23/05/2026 13:52

I just caught up - absolutely loved it and and really enjoying the old music. Had completely forgotten about "Live It Up".

Also thought Taggie's disco scene was great and am liking the expanded roles of Shelley and Kev.

And Charles was amazing, agree the casting is spot on.

I thought we'd get another 3 today so sad that I can't cancel the Disney subscription have to wait a whole week for more.

He was an awful husband in trying too!

Apparently it’s ep 8 or 9 so it’ll be an early birthday present for me as those eps aren’t released until nov/dec. Boo.

November? is this a fucking joke? Jesus wept

binliner · 23/05/2026 22:13

Just watched the recent episode. Not Tony &
Maude!

SemmaLina · 23/05/2026 22:31

In the book (as written by ❤️ darling Jilly ) doesn’t Monica end up very happily with Paul Stratton’s ex wife Winifred ?
As she’s not appeared yet , Dame Enid would be a lovely result , both women love classical music…

Loving the soundtrack on Spotify
And exits dancing
Walk like an Egyptian…….

GertrudeOHara · 23/05/2026 22:54

Monica ends up with Dame Enid! People used to wonder if Monica and Winifred “weren’t a bit dykey” was the actual phrasing I think but Dame Enid introduces her to Marcus in Apassionata.

interesting they don’t do the Maud/Tony thing as the big reveal of the traitor in their midst.

I will literally write to DT-C complaining if we have to wait til Nov for the last 6. Now get on with filming TMWMHJ. 24 episodes.

Blossombunnyy · 23/05/2026 23:57

Just watched. Remember me to tell everyone I am away on holiday/switch my phone off when the next batch drops its taken me until this evening to manage to watch it. I will also request the time of from work this week so I can live in a interrupted Rivals bubble a girl can dream.

Absolutely bloody fabulous again !

Charles - I hope he finds someone who will love him and treats him like a prince. He has my heart forever.

Cameron - didn't annoy me as much tonight she was less loud and brash.

Maud - her and Tony yuck! Something tells me this is all part of Tony's plan. Also I don't really like Maud.

Monica - Love her to bits she's faultless.

Fred Fred and Lizze just adorable, hope they end up together.

Declan - his face isn't as rough looking as series one has he been getting facials?

Tagi - is the constant dream like shots of her to show/enforce her naivety and innocence?

Shelly is just wonderful, when she explained the play to Tagi and the look of amazement on everyone's face made me laugh out loud.

The music was so good I had forgotten most of these songs. Thanks to pp for mentioning the Spotify playlist and I really hope we don't have to wait until November for the next batch.

Just bought (some of) the books as I’m
enjoying this so much. Love the music. Love Declan. But most of all love the romance of Freddie/Lizzie and Charles/gerald.

I got them all as a surprise gift from DD. They’re coming with me on holiday next week 🥰

if anyone has sky and loves a bit of Dyer, I’d recommend “One last deal” it’s a single- hander (very akin to Tom Hardy in Locke) - Dyer plays a very convincing football agent. Just watched whilst prepping Sunday lunch. Loved it.

I really didn't like Danny Dyer but this has been the absolute making of him! It's like watching a different person.

I really didn't like Danny Dyer but this has been the absolute making of him! It's like watching a different person.

Dyer was taken under the wing of Harold Pinter in his youth. Pinter was no fool and nurtured him and regarded him as a prodigious talent DDyer freely admits he sold his soul to put food on the table for his family during the years his fame went to his head which which may have skewed popular opinion of him. But if you’ve ever seen him live on stage (I have) he is outstanding. He also points out frequently (as does Kathy Burke) that certain accents give rise to people thinking it’s ok to assume that the actor is not very bright (her memoir is excellent). Or that the estuary accent is fair game to take the piss out of. Hence the very poignant scene in which Wayne is off to Eton because he passed the exam (unlike we suspect Prince Harry did ) and everyone laughing because the assumption that Fred Fred has bunged them a few quid is the reason why his entrance is assured.

EnchantedDaytime · 24/05/2026 21:52

I really enjoyed Kathy Burke's memoir. I have either read or listened to something about Danny's life (not the ancestry programme bit can't remember what) and how fame went to his head etc. He seems like a thoroughly decent bloke. His episode of The Assembly is brilliant too

This is one to check out on ITVX

prettygirlincrimsonrose · 26/05/2026 23:33

Wasn't Oliver Chris in IT Crowd with Katherine Parkinson? I seem to remember he was in one episode where Jen fancied him and then he was on Who Wants To Be Millionaire... Hopefully nice for them to reunite, even if his character is awful!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/05/2026 05:09

have watched all 4 now
i found the dinner party episode annoying.
i feel like i am missing something
did taggy get with rupert? i thought nothing happened.

THisbackwithavengeance · 27/05/2026 07:35

Am genuinely envious of those who’ve bought the books on the basis of the TV series and get to read them for the first time. I’m old so read them in the 80s/90s when they came out.

Be warned - the books are of their time and the characters behave accordingly.

No, he just helped her sort out the crisis with the stew

I didn't know that! Thanks I've been looking for an excuse to go back & my OH has never seen it, he likes the US one 🙄😄

Also as an aside Taggie's hair is gorgeous this series, part of me hopes it's a wig because the colour is sublime & attainable if so..

BunnyMcDougall · 27/05/2026 21:38

When does the next episode drop? Friday?

Lunde · 27/05/2026 22:05

I am p*ssed off that we are not going to get the whole series this spring/summer.

There are 12 episodes but Disney+ has decided to show 1-6 now but 7-12 won't be shown until an unknown date later in the year.

I grew up reading these books (old lady) and I love the fact they have embraced the 80s rather than try and update it and change story lines which would be more problematic now. It is very obvious the cast had a blast filming (which is very Jilly) and my 19 year old daughter loves it too. She is now reading the books and is loving them, despite some of the storylines which seem very questionable and outdated now. It is fiction and of its time in lots of ways but Jilly Cooper was so talented, clever and warm in her observations and characterisation.

I love the casting. I know Alex Hassel seemed so wrong physically for lots of people, but in my opinion he is amazing in the role and I am convinced. The female characters have been cast perfectly and cleverly are much more at the forefront than in the book. They are funny, human and engaging it really works. Loads of us love this book (and the others) and we have not been let down. A new generation have been introduced to Jilly Cooper. A fitting legacy for an amazing, talented woman.

I think they've given Maud a much clearer reason for her behaviour - maybe it was in the book and I missed it but I read Maud as being wholly selfish on the page as well as being weirdly competitive with Taggie. On screen you can understand how difficult it was to be married to Declan and how much she had given up to facilitate him (rather than just being lazy).

Similarly Monica has been granted a much more interesting & clever character - she was always capable but in this she has much more of a hinterland than dogs/gardening/opera.

Yes, I am overthinking it.

I only read Riders and Rivals last year after really enjoying watching Rivals and I definitely felt the tv show has improved on the characterisation across the board. I know people love the books on here so probably won’t agree with me, but I found a lot of the characters were quite one dimensional and some of the storylines sort of peter out. For me the TV show is much better constructed and satisfying. Weirdly I think Janie was one of the best written characters but they have left her out of the show!

Also, in reference to a couple of other posts, I think they definitely softened Rupert’s character to make him palatable in 2026- I was taken aback by how straight up awful and abusive he is Riders. Tbf even Jilly Cooper seems to row him back in for Rivals. I found the ‘foursome’ they are now talking about in Riders really disturbing and wondering how they will cover in the programme tbh cos there’s ’of it’s time’ and then there’s that.
