A group of school boys are marooned on a desert island in an adaptation or William Golding‘s classic novel Lord of the flies

A plane transporting, schoolboy crushed lands on a remote island with no adults around supervise them their attempts to remain civilise soon descends into violence.

This four part series is a first television dictation of the classic 1954 novel each episode is shown from one of the main characters with the first one devoted to piggy.

Piggy is a responsible one who wants to keep everything calm. A lot of the boys go so when they’re stranded piggy tells everyone they have to have rules but the boys don’t act well to that.

Piggy initially be friends Ralph a boy who voted leader but Ralph‘s rival Jack taught piggy about his weight and poor eyesight

Jack judges PIGGY starts picking on him. He tries to be friends with Ralph when he knows that Ralph is PIGGY‘s only thread to hold onto they really don’t like each other.

not sure if I will watch as never like the book at school but doing thread incase I do and for others who may enjoy

I'm really not comfortable with adults using words like 'homoerotic' to describe the relationship between two boys who have barely entered puberty, by the way. (Criticising what I can see of the link there, not anyone on this thread!)

I agree. I see Jack not actually disliking Simon because of some homosexual feelings for him like they're implying in that article but because he doesn't want to be seen as being friends with the outcast so he's a shit to him when his friends return at the start of term. He dislikes Piggy because he's fat, and smarter than he is.

Deep down under the bravado I think Jack is a scared little boy. You see glimpses of that coming through.

Poor simon. He’s the first death

I don’t rem the book and I assumed thy killed piggy as fatter and ate him

thi guess they didn’t eat simon as he was floating away

very sad

wonder if they will regret in e4

There was the Little'Un with the birthmark who vanished after the first attempt at a fire . No-one confirmed his death, probably didn't want to accept that death could occur in the island that they viewed as a paradise of adventure . And they didn't know exactly how many boys were there as they didn't hold a register (Piggy's fault of course in Jack's view) . The boy was only missed as he was so distinctive , how many more could they have lost ?

Killing Piggy and eating him would've been a step too far even for LOTF ( and imagine Jack's disgust if that was the only food on offer )

In all the years I've read this book , I never imagined a relationship between any of the boys beyond friendship maybe hero-worship?
Of course this adaptation was going to update things , I was kind of expecting this subject would be tendered out .

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/02/2026 14:34

Oh yes. Forgot about the little un 😢

you do feel a little sorry for simon and jack as had no one to love them and at school for xmas and why they are the way they are

but yes I thought simon was floating and not dead - it wasn’t clear to me till @RudolphRNR review was read

It is a difficult watch. I found the screen was very dark at times and hard to see what was happening. I am glad I watched it. I wonder what the outcome would be if it had been all girls on the Island.

I thought Simon had gone into the sea to ease his wounds but had drowned as he passed out, although I think him being in the sea was symbolic of Ralph losing all those who respected him.

I might rewatch it all though as I'm sure there are bits I've missed.

ExitPursuedByABare · 23/02/2026 16:03

My DD made me binge watch it when she was home for her father’s funeral. We both had nightmares! I was going to rewatch weekly but found it too disturbing.

Fabulously made and shot.

That makes sense more as sure they show him floating and eyes open /alive

as I said I didn’t think he was dead

tho the stabbing seemed to be stabbing someone /thing it wasn’t clear it was simon

tho as he comes out from the trees , Ralph the leader shouts no

'Deep down under the bravado I think Jack is a scared little boy. You see glimpses of that coming through'

He's a brilliant actor. Really pulls off switching between arrogance, vulnerability and savagery convincingly. Hope they all get recognised and receive awards for this.

Just watched back the ending of last night, I've no idea how I missed that Simon was dead as he floated away as the wounds were all visible.

Most of them had never acted professionally before (think only the one who plays Ralph). The casting people did a really good job. And can yoj imagine the fun those boys had!

All the actors are brilliant at the characters they play and as with good training they learn to distinguish between the two especially when it comes to acting roles with difficult outcomes.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/02/2026 21:20

Jack is very good and sure will go very far

Well he's in the role of Draco in the forthcoming Harry Potter series HBO.

He's Lox Pratt.

Re-watched the death of Simon.
Ralph was completely ineffectual , he made no sound just looked shocked and wide eyed, probably didn't want to be next if he intervened .
Piggy had backed away by this time .
When they set upon Simon the sounds were more like an animal squealing than a human .
So , yes , unless you knew he was going to die it wasn't really spelled out

The actors who play Simon and Jack are stunning looking boys

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/02/2026 17:57

I honestly thought the hints of what happened in the book was piggy being killed and eaten

I read it so long ago under sufferance that I couldn’t remember

And think one of the reviews said they never say where they were going

to have young uns and other kids plus th choir boys. All on the plane. Going where ?

and surely be a lot of teachers. Again weird that no adults survived

tho if they did be no story 😂

Simon's chest is covered in stab wounds!

I think they did it in this expressive way so as to avoid showing a graphic child killing which is often beyond the pale on TV screens.

Re the homoerotic stuff - I understand the PP's discomfort but I have taught this book many many times to year 10/11 and they always point that out themselves. The descriptions in the book of the ululating, the dancing and the orgiastic pig and then Simon killing are really very disturbing.

It is deliberately vague , probably so people cannot come back and say "No pigs live on that island" or any other discrepancies .

No adults except the parachute man and they added in the poor bloke they threw into the sea !

The 1990 version -which I avoided with every working cell in my body- apparently has a pilot or something who survives (DD has watched it) and the boys are older . It is set in the USA so many differences .
This series has fairly well copied the book and the original film, some tweaks .

You'll be buying a copy of the book before the month is over blondes Grin

Poor Piggy , he was the innocent soul in all this mayhem. !

Piggywaspushed · 24/02/2026 20:37

I love Piggy. Obviously.

Piggywaspushed · 24/02/2026 20:39

I think the programme captures quite well how complicated Ralph is. The boy actor isn;t quite up to Golding's nuanced text - but it shows quite well how torn he is between the good of Piggy and the lure of boys' own adventures.

The depiction of Roger is disappointing unless he comes to the fore next week. He is a horrible little bastard.

I can't unsee Gyles Brandreth in Maurice now.

EBearhug · 24/02/2026 21:58

I haven't read the book in a while, but I assumed they were all going back to school (in England) after the summer hols in the colonies with their parents, be in Singapore or Malaya or wherever it was. It didn't really matter exactly where from or to, it was a similar path for many. Clearly some were at the same school, and others weren't.

My father would have been a similar age to the older boys, and he was sent to boarding school at 7 (though within England, not from the colonies.)
