This is so slow. I've read the book and remember seeing the film in 1990 which teen me loved but not sure about this adaptation dh has already fallen asleep

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/02/2026 21:53

Trying to make out piggy lost the pig when he lost his nerve

Not a fan of the book at GCSE. Atwood got me hooked on books with the handmaid's tale at a level

not sure if 4 episodes are enough although PP saying it’s a bit slow

thanks for the thread I’ll come back after a couple of episodes

Here's a link to the story about boys this really happened to (they were older, aged 13 - 19).

I've tried and failed to get on with the book but it's such a classic that I'd really like to stick with this TV adaptation. It is very dark but I've been impressed with the boys' acting and the cinematography is gorgeous.

I liked the book but then I do like things with a dark undertone. The three leads are very good so far, always love Piggy bless him. Jack is great - cruel and arrogant and Ralph is quite charismatic.

ageingdisgracefully · 08/02/2026 22:03

Read it when 15, at school. It's pretty dark if memory serves. I can't remember Piggy being as knowledgeable or assertive as this portrayal.

Enjoying it so far and will try not to binge. Halo

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/02/2026 22:05

Well I really enjoyed that considering I didn’t think I would as hated the book at school

Also did the book for gcse English back in the 90s. Hated it. My 20 something old self reflected that it was probably because there were no female characters. Supposed to be an analysis of society and behaviour, but with 50% of society missing. No one to identify with. Add Of Mice and Men to the mix and the curriculum was really failing teenage girls 30 years ago.

I read it as a warning against exclusively letting public school boys run the world!

Shellingbynight · 08/02/2026 22:09

It is slow isn't it. I read it 50 years ago, enjoyed it then, and it must have made an impression as I remember the main themes.

But I am not sure if I will stick with it. Too many annoying boys. Piggy is a know-all PITA and Jack is Boris Johnson.

What hadn't hit me when I read it in the 1970s is that this isn't about children. It's just about male children. As a PP said, no one to identify with.

CrushingOnRubies · 08/02/2026 22:12

not read the book. Quite enjoyed it. Will watch the next episode

You are so right!

My O'Level books were:

  • Huckleberry Finn (boys)
  • Science Fiction Omnibus
  • WW1 poetry anthology
  • The Crucible (about Salem witch hunts)

And my literature-loving mother wondered why I refused to do English Lit at A'Level.

PuppyMonkey · 08/02/2026 22:28

Me specs!

I loved this. Don’t understand those saying it was slow, I thought the atmosphere was very menacing and the hour flew by. Haven't seen a young person with such a slappable face as Jack’s since Joffrey in Game of Thrones. Grin

Not2identifying · 08/02/2026 22:48

In my school, books in the lower sets were more male-oriented and books in the higher sets were more female-oriented. Read into that what you will, and excuse the pun!

placemats · 08/02/2026 22:58

It's brilliant and terrifying at the same time. I read it years ago. An excellent production and well scripted.

It's not a binge watch. Those young boys and lads are outstanding.

Pernicketywishes · 08/02/2026 23:02

Oh those fab young actors! Their parents must be bursting with pride watching them tonight. Really enjoyed the first episode… ☠️

cariadlet · 08/02/2026 23:10

I really enjoyed it. The boys' acting was excellent.

It was slow, with shots of eagles overhead, insects etc but I thought that added to the atmosphere. One of the reviews I read said that the because the actors were children, there was a limit to how many hours a day they could be filmed, so the crew used the time that they couldn't film to take the scenic shots. The overall effect was probably a mixture of artistic intention and serendipity.

placemats · 08/02/2026 23:21

My O level English literature didn't include LOTF. It did include Shakespeare

  • sonnets, Romeo and Juliet; A Man For All Seasons,:Chaucer; extracts Canterbury Tales; War poets. The novels were Pride and Prejudice and Great Expectations.

The actor playing Jack is also Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter TV remake
