A group of school boys are marooned on a desert island in an adaptation or William Golding‘s classic novel Lord of the flies

This four part series is a first television dictation of the classic 1954 novel each episode is shown from one of the main characters with the first one devoted to piggy.

I thought that the hunt was very well done. The boys putting on their camouflage, playing at being hunters, full of excitement and bravado.
Then the stunned silence when the pig was killed and the reality of death hit them. The way that the camera panned from one face to another was so effective.

I have read it, though not a school set text. (I was at a single sex school, I wonder if that was part of the decision?)

I have enjoyed... well, really appreciated the first two episodes, though some of it is more uncomfortable than enjoyable. I think it is well fone so far.

An added bonus for me is I spent 3 months camping in the Malaysian jungle with Raleigh International back in the last century. As I remember, as it's near the equator, it got dark at about 6pm, so they'd have had an hour of filming every day for the night scenes.

I wonder if the Tongan boys would have worked as well together if they had been to English public schools?

I watched all of it. I think it was great although it felt drawn out at stages. The acting was great too. Piggy was particularly good (and yes his accent is fab) I don’t usually like such artsy type of programs but I liked this. It was presented as a story rather than a realistic portrayal of a story (iyswim).

Piggy needs an award.

I had never read the book so was open to watching this new series.
Watched it all last week and loved every minute!
Superb acting by all, great landscape and camerawork, well done to all involved.
I like how each episode focusses on a specific boy. Piggy was excellent in episode 1.

The hunt was amazing. And the gruesome way the blood spurted out covering the body

amazed the chopped the pigs head off with the flint /stones

without a fire burning the ship went

but also how are they going to cook the meat

finding the suitcase was weird as female and don’t think there was a A female teacher on the plane

music was dramatic as well

a really good Episode

great little actors the little uns and the hunters

There were sudden shifts in tone but I think they were all well handled eg shock at the killing of the pig to having fun in the waterfall to returning triumphantly with the dead pig to realising that they had missed their chance to get rescued because they had let the signal fire go out.

suburburban · 16/02/2026 07:55

Is Piggy the only one in the group who is more WC, he doesn’t seem to know any of the others?

Ralph is also isolated but more UC

is it only the choir who already knew each other in the UK?

long time since I read the book again at single sex school

Gloriia · 16/02/2026 08:46

Wasn't as gripping as the first one, the actor playing Jack very good but it was the focus on Piggy in the first episode that made is so fascinating and moving imo. This one was just like watching a load of tweens playing (barring the pig bit and yes how did they cut it's head off with sharpened stones Confused).

Bunionbabe · 16/02/2026 10:10

Jack has a penknife, the only one it seems.

cariadlet · 16/02/2026 10:25

I think the portrayal of Jack is interesting. He can be cruel but he also has a vulnerability under the bravado which turns to anger if he thinks that anyone else has observed something which they could see as weakness in him.

Jack has a penknife, the only one it seems.

Yes, I am still not convinced that that would be enough to kill a wild pig with probably fairly tough skin but I'll let it go for the story. Of course, these days, you'd never be allowed a penknife on board, and it wasn't until after they found the suitcases.

I too like how they show Jack's vulnerability and bravado, and it's probably similar for many bullies. I like how perceptive Piggy is about it all, and thst no one listens...

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/02/2026 12:23

Yes Jack is a great little actor. Think will go far

That was a difficult watch last night and I was captivated and could barely look at times.

deeahgwitch · 16/02/2026 16:07

You really do have to suspend disbelief - Some of the boys looked burnt to a crisp and one of the Little ‘Uns was looking fairly pristine and Jack’s make up was stunning.
Once again a superb performance from the wee boy who plays Piggy.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/02/2026 16:39

The little uns just sit under the shade

I'm watching live. So atmospheric. The lighting and music are stunning.

Gloriia · 22/02/2026 22:02

It's very good, so atmospheric and full of doom and chaos. The choir boys soundtrack music so jarring which added to the angst.

SideshowAuntSallyxx · 22/02/2026 22:02

I've not read the book (we were tortured with Of Mice and Men instead) but feel I need to now. I feel really sorry for Piggy, he seems to be the only one that thought about the 'littlelies' and getting a camp ready.

What amazing little actors they are too.

Not2identifying · 22/02/2026 22:03

I think the TV show is amazing but the story is grim, really unappealing.

MrsHamlet · 22/02/2026 22:04

I love this book - taught it for years and cried every time.

I think it's an excellent adaptation but I'm not enjoying the additions.

Edited

They are all absolutely brilliant actors. Love how they really portray the descent into madness so convincingly <I know that's a bit simplistic but in a nutshell>.
