This book was part of my English O Level at school and I absolutely hated it. Years later I watched the film and still hated it.

Not sure whether to watch this new version or not. 🤔

Shellingbynight · 04/02/2026 09:41

I read this in my teens (it might have been for O level, I can't remember).
I remember really enjoying it. I am sure that decades later I'll have a very different response to it!

I saw the writer on the One Show yesterday, he said they have aimed to be faithful to the book, each episode tells it from one boy's point of view, e.g. Ralph, then Piggy etc.

The writer (Jack Thorne) also wrote Adolescence, which I loved.

PrincessScarlett · 04/02/2026 09:52

I'm on the fence as to whether this will make a good series or not. Book and film yes. But dragging it out over 6 weeks I'm not so sure. I guess the only way to do that is each episode is from a different boys perspective which is what they are doing.

It's a very cruel and gruesome book so not sure whether it will make food Sunday night viewing 🤷🏻‍♀️

PrincessScarlett · 04/02/2026 09:55

I think a lot will rest on whether the boy actors can act so hopefully they have some decent up and coming actors.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/02/2026 14:30

I’m def not sure about it

equally I try out most things on at 9pm

@PrincessScarlett it's only 4 episodes, the writer said he thought that was the right length to tell the story. We'll see if he was right!

Talipesmum · 04/02/2026 15:10

Really looking forward to this. I loved the book at gcse, and have been wanting to see a good adaptation of it for ages - I suspect it fell into that grey area where it’s all about kids, but also all
about brutality and murder - who to pitch it to? I’m heartened by the 9pm slot too. Will probably watch with the late teens.

diddl · 04/02/2026 21:21

I didn't like the film or the book either!

I remember seeing the 1963 version with James Aubrey.

Crinkle77 · 04/02/2026 21:50

I enjoyed the 1983 version with Balthazar Getty but think that's cos I fancied him and the actor who played Jack ❤️

canuckup · 04/02/2026 22:02

Loved the book 😂

Excited to see how this turns out

orangelion66 · 05/02/2026 18:22

The book is brilliant but that’s in large part due to how well written it is. I’m not sure I want to see the brutality played out on the screen. I’ll give it a go though.

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/02/2026 21:18

I really struggled with the book

wonder if they still have to read it at school now

I was also forced to read this as part of my English O Level. We did so much analysis that it ruined the book for me completely. Many years later I bought and re-read it and absolutley loved it. I will watch and see if it lives up to my expectations.

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/02/2026 23:57

Guessing also when 15 ish v reading as an adult it’s totally different

I also hated it at gcse and so don’t think I will watch. The director was on R4 this week and was explaining that the Golding family are very protective of the rights so he had to persuade them to let him do it. Each episode is from the pov of one of the main boys.

My overriding memory of it was they would all have fared a lot better if it had been a co-ed school trip and some capable sensible girls had been around to sort stuff out.

Indianajet · 08/02/2026 09:17

I hated the book (read it for O levels) and won't be watching it - I need cheering up on a Sunday evening, not depressing.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/02/2026 09:48

I’m hoping it will be good @Indianajet but agree don’t want all mopey on a Sunday

I read the book at school too, and enjoyed it. Decades later (quite recently, actually), I tried to read it again and couldn't get on with it. I only got about a chapter in and then gave up. I suppose it's me that's changed rather than the book.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/02/2026 17:12

One of , I might say my favourite book .
I have four/five copies and a Sparks Notes to dip into in various cupboards and bags .
Hated it at school when I was forced to read it .
The 1963 film is very stilted .
And Ralph looks nothing like Ralph , he was the boy with fair hair and build well .

I will probably watch this at the end or on iPlayer if I can.
It is a violent gruesome book I hope they can reflect this without it descending into gore.

I didn't even look at the remake , I read the synopsis and thought nope

IloveOwlsandPenguins · 08/02/2026 19:23

When a bunch of kids were actually marooned in real life they looked after each other and behaved brilliantly.

When was that and where?

Also did the book for gcse English back in the 90s. Hated it. My 20 something old self reflected that it was probably because there were no female characters. Supposed to be an analysis of society and behaviour, but with 50% of society missing. No one to identify with. Add Of Mice and Men to the mix and the curriculum was really failing teenage girls 30 years ago.

purpleme12 · 08/02/2026 21:12

I've never read the book or watching it and now I'm feeling a bit apprehensive reading these comments!!

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 08/02/2026 21:29

Neither me or dh did it at school. He's enjoying the bird spotting. The little 'uns are so tiny.🥺 Jack is a twat.
