I love this book - taught it for years and cried every time.

I think it's an excellent adaptation but I'm not enjoying the additions.

I did worry at the end when they were all stabbing something they were going to have changed the predicament of one of the boys so was relief when he appeared later.
What additions? I can only vaguely remember the story from school.

MrsHamlet · 22/02/2026 22:12

Simon's diary isn't in the novel. I don't think we needed that.

Neither are any of the flashbacks.

Gloriia · 22/02/2026 22:16

The speaking pig's head was quite disturbing with the flies and the maggots Shock.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/02/2026 22:18

The music and lights are great

and fantastic little actors considering their age

It's very psychedelic with the vivid colours and music. Quite discombobulating.

Anyone watching - they boys all look so skinny. Ribs and collar bones yet piggy hasn’t lost any weight an they ar living off mangos and fruit etc

I was thinking that about piggy!

The psychedelic colours are because there was a 6pm curfew for filming with children so they had to shoot during daytime but use filters to make it look dark. So I read in one of the background pieces, anyway.

RudolphRNR · 22/02/2026 22:52

I’m new to this. I’m one of the rare few who hasn’t read the book. Sending solidarity to you @SideshowAuntSallyxx as I was also tortured with the very dull and bland Of Mice and Men at school.
My take so far - the boys are exceptional actors, especially those who are the focus of each episode so far. But having not read the book, I’m finding the story hard to follow. Is that just me? From what I gather the main theme of the book is the boys descending into chaos and savagery but there are only moments of that mixed in with a lot of flashbacks and close up shots of jungle fauna.
I was surprised at the end of today’s episode that the bbc announcer said the final episode is available online when I thought we were only just getting going. And the fact that Simon died completely missed me - only realised this when reading up on the story afterwards. From watching tonight all I got was that he was excluded from the group and went for a swim at the end. I saw the boys were stabbing at something but assumed another animal.
So, mixed appreciation from me. I might skip the final episode for now, read the book first and come back to watch the programme end.

Horrible and grim episode tonight...A mere taster for what's to come I fear. Gloria in excelsis deo. Angels we have heard on high.

@RudolphRNR I didn’t know that either

trying to find good recaps of this is hard

I do wonder if they were all stabbing someone as you see crawling on the floor trying to escape

they need rules. When thu stop having rules they go a little mad and the scenes show that with the dancing and make up and head covers etc

bit didn’t reliese simon died.

can you post the recap you read

It's good to know the back story of their life before the crash. Obviously all isn't right with their minds, naturally given the trauma they've suffered.

The walk across the ridge reminded me of walking over Carrick a Rede rope bridge. That day was glorious weather, almost Mediterranean sea.

Simon's diary isn't in the novel. I don't think we needed that.

Neither are any of the flashbacks.

The suitcases and their contents weren't in the book.
The flashbacks -I suppose now we wouldn't have first hand experience of little boys being evacuated . There were dreams Ralph had about places he stayed ( he describes one as being a stronger memory as it was when his Mother was still there ) ponies , cornflakes with cream and sugar , his books all Books For Boys , he didn't read Mopsy and Flopsy as it was about two girls .
All memories that would be more poignant where he was on the island .

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/02/2026 06:55

Simons death in the book is one of the most tragic parts , the Hunters were in such a fired up frenzy with the storm and the killing of the pig . They were in their paints so anonymous They wanted something else to kill. When they saw the movement of Simon, they would've known it was him but their bloodlust pack mentality overtook their reason.

The writing of Simons body , battered and bloodied being lapped by the waves , the curious sea creatures surrounding him, his skin made silver by moonlight as the water accepts him and carries him away .
Simon was likened to a Christ like figure , he suffered at the hands of Jack with his indifference , then at the hands of the boys who called him "batty" then ultimately killed him.

Piggy never changed , his hair never grew and he managed to find enough food , but if he'd lost weight he wouldn't have been "Piggy"
Ralph was described as . built like a boxer but with a mildness to his face
Jack was skinny , ugly without silliness .

I think boys back then were generally thinner (my parents were that generation, people were thinner )

I completely missed that. When they were widely stabbing I thought they'd reimqgined another boys demise. When we saw Simon later I thought he'd let himself drift out to sea.

I should've maybe read a quick summary before watching.

Poor simon with those huge eyes, so full of hurt Sad.

EBearhug · 23/02/2026 07:55

But there was blood in the water.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/02/2026 08:07

Poor simon. He’s the first death

I don’t rem the book and I assumed thy killed piggy as fatter and ate him

thi guess they didn’t eat simon as he was floating away

very sad

wonder if they will regret in e4

I wondered why it was red, I put it down to them trying to be atmospheric or trying to represent spilt blood.

MissCooCooMcgoo · 23/02/2026 09:06

This, was shit and dissapointing. Too artsy fartsy, storyline hard to follow.

Boolabus · 23/02/2026 09:24

I originally thought (but hoped I was wrong) Simon had been killed when they were all stabbing at the grasses but then when I saw him in the water later with his arms moving I assumed he was still alive and was much relieved. Pretty poor if the majority of people watching last nights episode did not realise what had happened and that a character had been killed. Maybe it is slightly too artsy and they are not telling the story effectively.

I'm really not comfortable with adults using words like 'homoerotic' to describe the relationship between two boys who have barely entered puberty, by the way. (Criticising what I can see of the link there, not anyone on this thread!)
