The acting is superb.
Piggy is really excellent. Also whichever boy was singing with him.

Wasn’t expecting to love it, but did! Absorbing, atmospheric, with a sense of foreboding, and the young actors are impressive. The soundtrack (is it all Peter Grimes by Britten?) is very evocative of the era.

deeahgwitch · 09/02/2026 00:33

Piggy was a super little actor

CrushingOnRubies · 09/02/2026 06:28

@tiptoptoemaytoeliterally says”NO SPOILERS “ in the title. Thanks for that post reported

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 09/02/2026 07:04

I also hated it at GCSE. It was just too brutal. I remember at the time thinking it would have been very different if it had been girls stranded.

I think it's all Britten, but not all Peter Grimes.

I'm rethinking whether I want to watch now I know what happens

Thank you for reporting . I missed their reply /spoiler as must have posted same time as me

If you've read it you'll know the spoiler anyway

I hadn't read it so didn't know. But I think I'm just going to leave the rest now. I didn't find it very enjoyable watching anyway none of them were likeable at all apart from Piggy and it didn't seem like real life anyway..

cariadlet · 09/02/2026 07:52

I read the book but decades ago so had forgotten the details including the spoiler. The big giveaway has spoilt my enjoyment of the tv version as it will have for anyone who has heard of the book, but never read it and thought they would give the tv adaptation a try.

No Spoiler threads should only talk about events in episodes that have been broadcast. I think that posting major plot spoilers in a thread which has No Spoilers in the title is a really shitty thing to do.

purpleme12 · 09/02/2026 07:54

Absolutely

There's a spoilers thread anyway

I love this book, but first read it as a teen through my own choice, it wasn't a GCSE option. Have reread it several times and seen it as a stage play. My 15yo has recently read it (through choice) and loves the previous films so has binge watched this today. I'm going at TV pace. I love the casting, especially Piggy. I'm enjoying it and not finding it slow at all.

purpleme12 · 09/02/2026 08:02

It didn't seem slow to me no

Shellingbynight · 09/02/2026 08:14

I'll try another episode. I was expecting it to be Ralph, but it seems to be Jack. Not sure I can stand an hour of him but I'll give it a go! I do remember finding Piggy annoying when I read the book, so that much hasn't changed.

I thought the shots of the wildlife were lovely and the young actors are all very good. I just wonder if the book has four hours of screentime in it.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/02/2026 08:25

It didn't seem slow to me in the slightest. We thought it was excellent. The music was an unexpected bonus and I felt that worked very well. Britten is of the right period.

I read LOTF as an O level set book nearly 50 years ago (gulp) and have re-read it once or twice since. I feel sorry for the person who posted the spoiler. She probably thought, as I did, that there was nobody in the UK who hadn't read it at school. Clearly there are a few.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/02/2026 08:30

I'll just add that I'm delighted they've stuck to having a cast of just boys. As others have already said, this would be a totally different story if there were girls there. What an undertaking it must have been transporting all those boys with their family members, chaperones, tutors etc out to Malaysia. I believe filming hours are very limited for young children so they must have had to make the most of what they were allowed to do with the littl'uns, who are adorable.

I'm really impressed by the work of the costume department. I was born several years after the book was published and children were wearing rather different clothes by the time I was growing up, but having all the boys in grey flannel shorts, knee socks, knitted pullovers etc with short back and sides seems exactly right to me. Also having them all skinny by modern day standards except for Piggy. Brilliant casting.

JanBlues2026 · 09/02/2026 08:30

What age is this suitable for please?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/02/2026 08:32

I'd hesitate to show it to a child under 13. It's being broadcast after the watershed for a reason, even though every single actor is 13 or under (so far).

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/02/2026 07:07

I think it's all Britten, but not all Peter Grimes.

Ah, thanks. I recognised the music and ‘shazamed’ it at one point to check, and it came up with ‘Peter Grimes’!

RipplePlease · 09/02/2026 08:54

I also read this for O level 40
years ago!
I loved the black and white film version. We taped it from the tv and me and my brother would often quote from it!
Looking forward to seeing how this one shapes up.

There was an excerpt from one of the Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes at one point. Much of the choral stuff was also Britten.

Samewrinklesnewname · 09/02/2026 09:10

Hated the book at school, I gave it a go last night but won’t be watching any more
