The four-part spy drama from Mammoth Screen production is set against the backdrop of the MI5 and explores human relationship as its characters battle between loyalty and deception.

Episode 1 will air at 9pm on Sunday 8th February 2026 on ITV1 and ITVX, with the second episode to air in the same slot the following day.

The four-part series follows Evans' character John Hughes, an MI5 officer with a crumbling marriage who is tipped off about an informant who could help him take down a criminal gang in Stockport.

John Hughes a mid-career MI5 officer desperately grappling to maintain a work-life balance in a rapidly evolving intelligence landscape and a marriage that is about to implode.

The series kicks off with John meeting a British Iranian man who claims he has intelligence about a known gang in Stockport, but before he can share the information with the MI5 agent, he is executed by an assassin whom John then kills in self defence.

John is then wrongfully placed under internal investigation, facing scrutiny from his superiors, leading John to question whether the threat might be closer to home than he released.

Is he just paranoid, or is he really onto something? Well, the show is called Betrayal...

Anyone else think the acting is really quite poor?
Like that wife would marry him?
And he is so obviously not a secret agent (think Jonathan pine!)
Its like a ten year old wrote the script 😫

Let's just get bonked on the head, be unconscious for a bit and then run about like a mad thing without so much as a paracetamol.

I'm calling him dropping down dead (ish, maybe no dead - is there a season 2?) in the closing scene, in his wife's arms.

Yes - Shaun Evans seems a bit...vacant? Like he can't be bothered.

And Omid Djalili is miscast.

He's suffered a catestrophic brain injury and is now hallucinating. Only explanation

So John female partner was she a baddi. As he said - did he kill him as blabbing or to save claire

So she did order the killing of the man in e1

and claire obv forgive him just as he forgive Martin / who apparently was a heave and a squirt

but would you really have that conversation with your nanny

The poor nanny. Hope she gets a job with people who aren’t insane!

It went from really basic to totally confusing. I would be hard pressed to relay the story to someone who hadn’t seen it.

If there is a second series not sure I’ll bother. Passed the time but not great considering the cast. And why did that guy (Greg?) have it in for him so much.

Thought this was so totally crap. I didn’t care about any of the characters and all those marital issues were just an even more boring diversion from the main story. . Plus at the end them getting back together because he knows how it feels when she had an affair and she now knows how passionate he is about his job because he saved them (or some other such rubbish). Simplistic and ridiculous.

From my understanding there was some terrestrial organisation who were going to kill loads of people at a Persian community centre because they were opposing the Iranian regime. Assadi was working for MI6 but his family had been kidnapped in Iran in order to force him to work for the terrorist group. Meereen was working for MI6 and thought Assadi was loyal to her/them and didn’t realise he’d been compromised. But ultimately I just didn’t care about any if it and only persevered because it was only 4 episodes.

Slightly concerned they’re thinking of a second series now Meereen has left MI6 and is working with Shaun Evan’s but I can’t imagine the viewing figures have been very good.

So the quotes from that make Mehreen look very suspicious!

Was very confusing Yy persevered as it was only four episodes not sure would have stuck with it if it had gone on any longer, it was very silly in places & we never found out if his bum was ok.

Episode 1 is so bad. So he shoots someone and “may get investigated for misconduct.” No police inquiry. No prosecution.

Being offered VERS? With two years? In the civil service pending investigation?

The blurb calls him an Mi5 agent.

I reckon he might be on 50-60k but that’s nothing in London. If the wife is a GP I guess she earns more.
