The four-part spy drama from Mammoth Screen production is set against the backdrop of the MI5 and explores human relationship as its characters battle between loyalty and deception.

Episode 1 will air at 9pm on Sunday 8th February 2026 on ITV1 and ITVX, with the second episode to air in the same slot the following day.

The four-part series follows Evans' character John Hughes, an MI5 officer with a crumbling marriage who is tipped off about an informant who could help him take down a criminal gang in Stockport.

John Hughes a mid-career MI5 officer desperately grappling to maintain a work-life balance in a rapidly evolving intelligence landscape and a marriage that is about to implode.

The series kicks off with John meeting a British Iranian man who claims he has intelligence about a known gang in Stockport, but before he can share the information with the MI5 agent, he is executed by an assassin whom John then kills in self defence.

John is then wrongfully placed under internal investigation, facing scrutiny from his superiors, leading John to question whether the threat might be closer to home than he released.

Is he just paranoid, or is he really onto something? Well, the show is called Betrayal...

It would have been good if all four episodes had dropped this morning like the BBC does, but instead they’ll be available at 10pm tonight.

I think I'm going to give this a go. All of the Lord of the Flies episodes are already on the iplayer so I can watch that whenever.

I record ITV, download bbc so can watch with subtitles. I can no longer hear properly and it’s either subtitles or having to rewind every minute or so. Especially when actors mumble.

BBC has subtitles if you watch it ?

I always have them on as partially deaf and gawd they mumble or okay background music so loud

I record one thing at 9pm (sky tv) as I go to bed early. Then that leaves another station, for the family to watch. If I record two at once, then they can’t watch what they want! Hence itv is recorded and bbc downloaded later 😁 purely due to subtitles.

JaneJeffer · 08/02/2026 21:00

I can record two programmes and watch a third on Sky but I can’t record any ITV or C5.

dapsnotplimsolls · 08/02/2026 21:07

Whoah.

JaneJeffer · 08/02/2026 21:07

Jesus this is brutal!

JaneJeffer · 08/02/2026 21:11

She is very suspicious, which is understandable.

daffodilandtulip · 08/02/2026 22:07

This is good. It must be hard to not have conversations about work but I do feel the wife is being a bit harsh. I always wonder how realistic this MI5/6 stuff is, and wonder how people manage to live like this.

the80sweregreat · 08/02/2026 22:10

It can’t be easy if your married to a spy. I suppose you have to just suck it up, but the fact he had an affair has made her paranoid now as well.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/02/2026 22:10

Im thinking maybe Gregory / the bloke with Simone in the office may be the snitch

It’s very well acted. Gets on with the story , which I like.

mylovedoesitgood · 08/02/2026 22:20

Did anybody else wonder how they could have afforded to buy that beautiful big house in London?

placemats · 08/02/2026 22:54

Switched over half way to Lord of The Flies. Just couldn't get into it. None of the actors seemed involved or interested, and I suspect like me, hadn't a clue what was going on.

I'm out.

Assuming he gets very well paid

she seemed happy with 2yrs salary redundancy

We struggled to buy into the “main” characters and nothing happened. Not really. Half way we switched to Lord of the Flies. Thankfully had the final episode of Patience to watch as that saved the night.

I should not know that my friend’s son works for MI5 but I do, oops, and it’s not particularly well paid - civil service with London allowance. Maybe the wife’s job pays more but this is such a TV thing.
