SPOILERS BRIDGERTON SEASON 4 - Benedict’s story

IWantToHibernate · 28/01/2026 16:55

I couldn’t see a thread so thought I would start one.

The first 4 episodes drop on Netflix tomorrow (29th Jan). We will then need to wait until 26th February for the other 4.

We all know it’s not a realistic period drama but it’s great escapism and I’m looking forward to binging the first 4 eps.

I think the the poor girl who marries Benedict has definitely drawn the short straw. He’ll be riddled. Riddled I tell you

IWantToHibernate · 29/01/2026 19:31

I think we can guess how Fran is going to find her pinnacle.

I hope Lady Danbury isn’t leaving, Agatha is great

The only pointless bit of it all is the Mondrich family. I do not understand what they add.

😂 that really mad me laugh.

minou123 · 29/01/2026 20:05

I will say this, the actor who plays Benedict, Luke Thompson, is an excellent French speaker. He grew up in France and is completely fluent, with a brilliant accent.

It must have been hard to speak French so poorly in the library scene.

Kirschcherries · 29/01/2026 20:28

I have the same problem with the series as I had with the book. It’s just not credible that Benedict spends so much time with Sophie and doesn’t recognise her.

I love the development of some of the supporting characters like Mrs Vardy and Mrs Wilson.

Maybe it’s because he’s bedded so many women (and men), he has trouble remembering anyone.

In the book 2 years have passed since the ball, when he meets her again in the countryside. She was wearing a mask, it was dark, and memories can distort a lot over time. There are many things not credible about Bridgerton but I don’t find this completely unrealistic in the circumstances.

The series may go that way but in the book the Earl of Penwood was not as nice to Sophie as they’ve portrayed. He treated her with contempt and reluctantly took her in as his Ward when her mother died. When he died he left some money to the stepmother for Sophie’s care until she was 20, (as long as she lived in the house) which is why she kept Sophie around. He did leave Sophie and the stepsisters dowries.

I have watched the first 3 and will watch the fourth tomorrow. I wonder if they are going where has been indicated with Francesca…don’t want to plop a huge spoiler down IYSWIM

Kirschcherries · 29/01/2026 21:01

@IWantToHibernate For me it’s just too dragged out. But you do make good points.

mogtheexcellent · 29/01/2026 21:15

They are setting both eloise and fran up for their seasons. No clear indication as to who is next. I am hoping it will be eloise though.

I find i prefer Anthony and Kate not being in it. I loathed season 2.

I wonder if they will do them both together as a joint season. Judging by the trailer for part 2, it looks like something very pivotal is going to happen for Francesca in eps 5-8. And they can’t wait too long to do Eloise’s story as the actress is already 36 playing someone in their late teens/ early 20s. I think they’re going to do both their stories alongside each other.

OP posts:
Kirschcherries · 29/01/2026 21:25

I agree they need to do Eloise next. In the books I think she was about 27/28.

Penelope was definitely not on her 3rd season in the books. I think she had been out for many years as she was chaperoning Hyacinth. So moving the order around has messed up the timeline slightly.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 29/01/2026 21:31

I watched 3 episodes today. Slightly open mouthed, if truthful. I've not read the books but this is Cinderella on steroids basically. I didn't quite know whether or not to laugh or cry... it's comfortingly familiar, I'll give it that.

pouletvous · 29/01/2026 22:02

watche episode one

seems a bit predictable. all a bit samey?

🤣 Exactly what I was thinking!

honeyrider · 30/01/2026 01:31

I watched the four episodes tonight, I enjoyed it but felt it was drawn out too much and there's another four episodes to go.

Lennonjingles · 30/01/2026 07:24

I watched all 4 episodes last night, really enjoyed the simple Cinderella tale, yes Benedict is being a “dick”, but can’t help but take to him, plus he’s very nice to look at. It’s a bit of escapism, not difficult to follow.

LondonLady1980 · 30/01/2026 07:43

I watched Episodes 1 and 2 last night and although it’s a little slow it is still nice, easy watching.

Pen is looking phenomenal!

And Violet is the star of the show for me! She steals every scene shes in - a totally glorious character.

hollytheheroic · 30/01/2026 10:36

I liked it better than last series, proper escapism. The actress playing Sophie is beautiful and very likeable. I saw her in another Netflix thing (Survivors?) and she was brill in that too.

Untailored · 30/01/2026 13:42

So what’s the premise with Benedict and the mistress thing? Is it that a gentleman can’t marry a maid? Not socially acceptable? So a mistress position is the best he can offer.

Or is he just being a dick?

Yes I think that’s the gist of it. His friend earlier programme was speaking about someone else having a mistress and it’s common for men to seek love outside their marriage and keep a mistress.

Mistresses of ‘gentlemen’ would usually be housed and financed, like Anthony’s mistress in season 1. In Benedict’s head he probably thinks it would be a better life for Sophie than a maid.

My DH walked in just as the discussion was being had about “having tea”, he did not get the euphemism!

I have watched all 4 eps and did enjoy it. Although none of them have been a patch on season 1.

I must have missed Francesca’s sub text - what am I missing?

EnglishBreakfastTea1 · 30/01/2026 17:05

@SlatternIsMyMiddleName Fran isn't getting orgasms. I think she loves her husband in a platonic way, but the extra cherry on top isn't there. She was very attracted to Michaela in S3...

I love Luke Thompson and Benedict! Even though the mistress part was icky I have read the books so I know he does better by Sophie after this.
