SPOILERS BRIDGERTON SEASON 4 - Benedict’s story

IWantToHibernate · 28/01/2026 16:55

I couldn’t see a thread so thought I would start one.

The first 4 episodes drop on Netflix tomorrow (29th Jan). We will then need to wait until 26th February for the other 4.

We all know it’s not a realistic period drama but it’s great escapism and I’m looking forward to binging the first 4 eps.

OP posts:
SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 30/01/2026 17:20

Ahhhh, thank you for the Francesca hint. I did wonder but didn’t think one of the Bridgerton ladies would be so inclined.

BreakingBroken · 30/01/2026 17:28

Watched 1-2 yesterday and I get zero chemistry from the B&S match.

WelcomeToMonkeyTown · 30/01/2026 17:31

Is no one going to mention Lord Anderson’s backside?

<<fans self>>

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 30/01/2026 17:44

Or Violet’s negligee. Fair play to her.

Kirschcherries · 30/01/2026 18:01

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 30/01/2026 17:44

Or Violet’s negligee. Fair play to her.

I laughed out loud at her trying to decide what pose. The negligee was lovely.

Yes, Lord Anderson looked very fit. I am enjoying their romance. I can’t wait to see how Anthony reacts. Apparently he is back in the next 4 episodes.

Untailored · 30/01/2026 18:19

Violet is epic this season. Loving her nervousness.

FiloPasty · 30/01/2026 22:00

I’ve also really enjoyed it. I’ve read all the books, and did get a bit waylaid by the Cinderella story but I think they are doing great so far. Season 5 is about to start filming and season 6 signed up. I think it will be Eloise then Francesca (I don’t want to give spoilers if you’ve not read the books but they are both great stories)
I think there is also a second Queen Charlotte movie and whispers of other spin offs.
Fingers crossed that they do Season 7&8 as Gregory & Hyacinths stories are also fab and the actors will be much older by then.

LondonLady1980 · 30/01/2026 22:46

I’ve just finished episode 3 and dare I say it…. but I feel a little bit bored 🙄

Mum2838 · 30/01/2026 23:05

I binged all four episodes and I found it very romantic! I enjoyed all the scenes between Benedict and Sophie - the actress is wonderful. Though after all the longing and heartbreak of the four episodes, the mistress request was actually very funny. (Benedict!!😂) I’ve read the book and Benedict’s inner monologue there was very annoying and long winded, but I’m enjoying him much more here. The actor looks a bit too old for her but they are very sweet together.

DallasMajor · 30/01/2026 23:22

I have loaded MN whilst watching ep 1. It definitely has not engaged me as much as previous seasons but I will keep going.

DallasMajor · 30/01/2026 23:23

But I agree about Benedict being riddled!

PinterandPirandello · 30/01/2026 23:43

I think the costumes and hair are exquisite and love it just for this. It’s so lavish - I wonder if the costumes department have won awards (they should). Loved Eloise’s look at the masquerade ball.
I don’t find Benedict as handsome as the other male leads in previous seasons (particularly swooned over season 1 and King George). He’s a good actor though but I feel the chemistry between the leads is missing.

JustFish · 31/01/2026 00:34

Oh gods what fresh hell is this? I am still watching but cannot suspend my disbelief any longer.

Benedict is a randy chlamydia ridden koala and what's with the sideways smirk? I know, it's meant to be rakish charm combined with boyish vulnerability but he looks like he's trying out for a gurning contest and the minute you see it, it removes any tenuous sex appeal he may have had.

Episode 3 - they end up soaked through in the storm, break into the house and light a fire. Great! So what happens to the horses? Last seen standing in the gravel, hitched to a gig in the pouring rain, as if they were a bloody car that's just parked up. Was there a convenient groom, that they somehow didn't contact or ask to help them get into the house, who picked up the pieces there? Did Benedict, mysteriously wounded on the flank with a diffuse bruise ( that somehow develops into a fresh looking straight linear scar) when he shows it to Violet in episode 4 manage to get out and unhitch /stable the horses before collapsing? Did the overly competent masquerade maid manage to fit that in in between lighting fires and mopping his fevered brow? What kind of first aid is some mysterious liquid found in a bedside bottle,(alcohol? Aftershave? Water from a flower vase?) and an incompetently tied bandage strip and pad for a wound anyway? and how does it provide such instant relief? How does she manage to do the manual work of multiple people in related to running a regency household and have nice hands/nails, and time to read?

Whistledown just doesn't work without the anonymity and subterfuge, it's now narration padded out with boring and enfeebled analogies. Equally, all earlier nods to a class system with ton, demi monde, servants etc that were in the first few series have completely evaporated. Now we have maids sitting with their mistress for an informal chat like it's some sort of personal development meeting? All the interplay of relationships, friendships and contacts that could be made, that were unacceptable, taboos, shiboleths, society rules, and decorum are just gone.

Right, I am willing to accept it's totally ahistorical regency lite. I can deal with alternative histories and colour blind casting, it made for some great earlier series and some fabulous actors getting involved.

But we have now firmly gone with the Netflix curse of all issues must be represented in the current approved fashion. So we have a minor character housemaid with a limb disability (why couldn't she have been a debutant, it would have been more convincing than as a house maid?) a couple speaking BSL in a crowd scene, nothing wrong with any of these things but it all felt so tokenistic and shoehorned in, in a way that is conspicuously different from the earlier series.

On the same note - it's trying so hard to be relevant and au courant, with the sub plots. Maids and their labour market issues! An older woman rediscovering her sexuality, dealing with age and self image! Young bride struggling with her sexuality in a relationship with an almost painful absence of chemistry (but somehow still the worlds most supportive and sensitive regency husband giving her a very modern total acceptance pep talk? )

(My bet is on F discovering her same sex attraction and some sort of thrupple with the intrusive cousin, and I will be v disappointed to be wrong) with alternative theories include her discovering she is asexual. Or neuro diverse. Or possibly all three?

Incidentally, the cousin arriving like a hoydenish highwayman, driving her own coach, as her coachman had motion sickness - well, why would he be employed as a coachman then? Surely that major issue might have come up during his apprenticeship and previously employ? Unless he's being shoehorned in as a sufferer of mennieres or something?

Still loving the costumes the hair, the cakes, the style, and a few strong actors who can wring a good performance out of this drek but my god, it's even painful to hate watch now.....

Untailored · 31/01/2026 06:49

I think you’re taking it a bit too seriously. It’s not a documentary. We don’t need to know about standards of equine care in the regency period.

I was thinking about the spin offs and I would like a Violet and Edmund spin off and how they met.

I know I'm taking it too seriously ! That's just what was annoying me. 😅

I couldn't just accept watching it as charming historically inaccurate escapism like the first 2 series because the story wasn't compelling, interesting or involving enough.
So my inner monologue was more interested in 'what happened to the horses - are they still standing out in the rain?'
And that led to all the other observations and general feeling that the whole thing was utterly low effort.

LondonLady1980 · 31/01/2026 08:03

@JustFish- I’m with you! I kept thinking, “What about the horses!!!!”

And I would love to know what wonderful elixir and special dressing caused Benedict to go from writhing around in the bed in agony, hallucinating and covered in sweat, to then sleeping calmly in just a few minutes and then seeming perfectly fine the next morning? Sophie has the kind of knowledge and super skills that could save the NHS millions and slash the mortality rates of sepsis!

I also found it really impressive that she spotted an open window, climbed through it to access the property, locate a candle and some matches (in the dark and in house she’s never been in before), and then let Benedict in, all in the space of about 5 seconds.

I know it’s not real, blah blah blah, but it’s the little details that do get noticed and I can’t stand lazy writing.

I really disliked the book. He really exploited a vulnerable girl. Much preferred the other books. Wonder if the programme will be less misogynistic.

None of the books is a patch on the queen Georgette Heyer. Or if you want the sex too(!) Stephanie Laurens. Now if someone would only do films of these ….

Yes - I’d love to see some Georgette Heyer film /tv adaptations!

This is absolutely true, if you’re thinking about the welfare of the horses instead of whether the handsome but rakish gentleman is going to ravish the beautiful maid in a deserted house then you’re definitely not enjoying it! Second half might be better?

myladyjane · 31/01/2026 09:35

Dd and I were also worried about the horses….

i liked this loads better than season 3 though. Found it quite funny and quite sweet.

I like Benedict generally. I liked him and Eloise. I like the foreshadowing of Eloise, realising that being a spinster may not be so great (I wonder if Marina will die in one of the next set of episodes).

I loved the Queen although I really hate the Mondriches and that is a really stupid direction. I was also a bit surprised when lady d said she also didn’t come from that world. Wasn’t she sierra leonian royalty?

Poor Varley. Liked Pen (still hate Colin).

I thought Sophie was very sweet and that they had good chemistry. Benedict must be a walking clap factory though.

i liked Fran and John until Michaela turned up. That storyline change really pisses me off badly. Could have so easily picked another character, Eloise being the obvious one.

why dont they ever mention Daphne. No excuse for her not being at the Ball, surely Fran would have preferred the pinnacle chat with her not her mother etc. make some excuse that she’s just had another baby or something.

Best bit was Violet though. Total Queen. Dd and I cheered when she finally got the snog.

TheGoddessAthena · 31/01/2026 09:57

Love a bit of Bridgerton and watched the first episode yesterday.

A side take on the show - I work very irregularly as an extra for film and TV (not on Bridgerton) and Netflix is the best company to work for as there is SO much money sloshing about. Coffee trucks, loads of snacks, nice food. They have a lot of cash and never scrimp on things like number of extras or costumes. Costumes though look great from a distance, but they won't be expensive especially in crowd scenes. The same dresses will be used for multiple people over multiple seasons, it's only the main cast who will have their own outfits. You can really see how much money they have to spend on scenes like that initial ball scene - all the floral arrangements, the mega fancy location, the tower of macarons that Sophie almost tumbles into, hundreds of extras all probably there for 2 days filming.

I worked a couple of times on Outlander and they have a massive warehouse which is rammed with clothing, all meticulously sorted by category. You wear a vest under your corset so they don't have to wash the corsets each wear. Lots of things are specially made by the very skilled on site team, and for Outlander at least some of the fans sent in items to the costume team, things like knitted shawls or mittens.

To add to this most excellent rant (which I will conveniently ignore when I rewatch), Sophie went back for her coin purse, made it halfway up the stairs before Benedict did some very unsexy fingering and then left again without fetching said coin purse. Will she expect her friends to pay her way at the pub? I am really enjoying it so far even though I don’t find Luke Thompson attractive at all, I am enjoying the yearning and Yerin has been brilliant. Also loving Hyacinth saying it like it is and Violet’s garden finally blooming. Have laughed out loud several times, especially at Eloise so thumbs up from me.

Re. Daphne, Violet did mention her during the chat with Francesca. I think Daphne is busy being a Duchess and maybe women of that time didn’t go back to their parents/family home very often if they didn’t live close by, as they were busy keeping their own household and estate.

Anthony is the Viscount and owns Bridgerton house so he is still around a bit (he will be in part 2). Colin is married to Lady Whistledown so he will still be around. Francesca hasn’t had her story yet, but in the books she went to Scotland with John and didn’t come back much IIRC.

But I don’t think there’s any need for Daphne to be in it as her story has finished. Especially as the Duke actor left after season 1.

Yes, definitely un-sexy fingering.

When he stuck his fingers in his mouth it made my stomach turn 🤣

I quite fancied Benedict in the last 3 series but he’s really not doing anything for me in this series.

I’m just not sure he’s a good enough actor to carry off the leading role…. there just isn’t that star quality or depth about him to carry it off.
