TV shows which just need to stop

Which once loved tv shows do you think have now gone on too long and have become boring, repetitive, predictable and tedious and just need to stop?

I’ll start:
Bake Off
The Apprentice
Call the Midwife

Greys Anatomy. Was SO good when it started, jumped the shark some years ago.

I used to love Grey’s Anatomy, @Illjustplayostrich - but I agree with you that the later series are simply not worth watching.

Can I ask - and apologies if I am being stupid - but what does ‘jumped the shark’ mean? I get that it means something has deteriorated, but how does it mean that?

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 23/01/2026 17:44

As a Danish citizen I would like the news to stop.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 23/01/2026 17:46

There are times when I have to stop watching the News and current affairs programmes, for the sake of my mental health, so I understand completely, @StrictlyAFemaleFemale.

LoftyMintTraybake · 23/01/2026 17:49

Gogglebox. Used to love it but the novelty has long since worn off..

Topseyt123 · 23/01/2026 17:50

Anything Michael MacIntyre. He just jumps around a stage and shouts, and that's it.
Mrs Brown's Boys. Just awful.
I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here. It's been going on for far too long and most of the time now I no longer have any idea who the so-called celebrities are.

Actually, much of Saturday night TV as the offerings are so unfailingly crap.

Grantchester ….loved it with James Norton but it’s gone so po faced.
the apprentice before it goes just too weird.

I think Grantchester went off the boil even before James Norton left. The last season with him in was getting a bit silly, storyline wise. I suspect that's when they stopped using the books and it just became 'inspired by' instead.

It's a pity; I liked it very much, and thought all the period clothes, shops, make-up etc were great. It was good cosy TV as well as actually also dealing with more hard-hitting issues than you might expect.

I still love the Bake Off and Strictly.

Strictly
anything with Ant n Dec or Stephen Mulhearn
The Masked Singer
Big Brother
All the soaps
Casualty
Love Island, Towie etc
Bargain Hunt
Cash in the Attic
BGT
Anything with Davinia McCall except Long Lost Family
Taskmaster
The Traitors - or rest for a couple of years. They put the latest series on (which I am not watching) too close to the celebrity version.
That cleverclogs quiz show hosted by Victoria Coren Mitchell
Gogglebox

I found that the celebrity one just whetted my appetite Grin

Now that you have Dave, Challenge and other channels showing re-runs, even more reason to stop flogging a show past its sell by date. People can watch the show on those channels whilst it still was a funny, interesting or show of good quality.

Jump the shark comes from an episode of Happy Days where the Fonz waterskis over a shark. It was seen as a moment where the show had gone on so long there were now ridiculous storylines

Mymanyellow · 23/01/2026 18:13

Trouble is while I agree with mosts of your lists, these shows seem to be the most popular.
What happened to two hours of good drama? Not oh somebody weird had moved in next door either.

Maybe I'll give it a go again.

suburburban · 23/01/2026 18:39

I think some of them need updating

escape to the country with annoying music

Newsenmum · 23/01/2026 19:36

Love island. I honestly cant think of anything positive it does for either contestants, viewers or society as a whole.

Netcurtainnelly · 23/01/2026 21:07

Debbie Meaden and Peter jones need to be booted off Dragons den now.
They've been making ,money since 2005 from others peoples ideas.

Let someone else in.

Agree Apprentice has been done to death.

It means that the plotlines have now got so farfetched that it's run out of places to go.

Thank you @Illjustplayostrich.

thh1986 · 25/01/2026 23:13

I LOVE lost and found in the lakes, the scenery, the stories, the free divers, the metal
detectorists, the history, the craftsman it is BRILLIANT. I also LOVE dragons den for the sheer inventions!

thh1986 · 25/01/2026 23:16

Purplebunnie · 21/01/2026 23:43

Mrs Browns Boys
Anything with Ant & Dec - how the hell do they keep winning awards every year
That stupid program finding things people have lost in the lake district
The Apprentice
Dragons Den
Love Island, I'm a Celeb etc etc and all the other tacky crap like it

Every bloody cookery show - except for Saturday Morning Kitchen and Best Bits

All the quiz shows except University Challenge DH would be unbearable if that went

I weaned myself off the soaps years ago, so they can go as well

I would like to have a decent Saturday night again, BBC is dire we end up watching Netflix or Prime

And why is it when the BBC show football, snooker etc at the same time on 1 & 2 they don't utilise BBC3 & 4. Move some of the other stuff over or put the snooker on 3 or 4

I LOVE lost and found in the lakes, the scenery, the stories, the free divers, the metal
detectorists, the history, the craftsman it is BRILLIANT. I also LOVE dragons den for the sheer inventions

DeftGoldHedgehog · 27/01/2026 11:31

IMO what needs to stop is dull remakes. I have been watching Lynley and Leo Suter is very attractive, but gosh, it's pretty basic stuff. When you could have say, the entire Dr Ruth Galloway series (also set in Norfolk), which would be far more interesting.

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 27/01/2026 23:21

Anything involving the Tudors; I'm sick of them all.

Any show which involves setting the contestants creative challenges and booting one of them off each episode. I have never liked that format, but it seems as though no one can think of any other way of doing things. I want to watch the contestants develop their skills during the process. I don't want to watch them play it safe every week just so they survive until next week. And I don't want to see interior design or sewing become a crazy race against time so that most projects are never quite finished.

Mrs Brown's Boys

Yes!!!!! Bloody awful, i can't believe anyone with a brain watches this poisonous garbage, absolutely vile.

Bertiebiscuit · 05/04/2026 21:18

TheDogsMother · 21/01/2026 22:30

This x 1000.

It's really not ok to make programmes about blokes taking the p*ss out of women, the misogynist version of "Black & white minstrel show", should have been consigned to the dustbin of history decades ago. Men dressing up as women, pantomime dame style, to mock women is not acceptable, I'm still shocked it was ever made and shown. Part of my decision to get rid of my T. V., I don't believe in paying to be insulted.
