Remade for 2025

It's time to bookmark another crime drama for your watchlists as it's now been confirmed just when Lynley (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/how-to-watch-lynley/) will be landing on BBC One

Described as a "contemporary update" of the original novels by Elizabeth George, the new four-part series (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/lynley-adaptation-bbc-first-images-newsupdate/) will premiere on BBC One on Monday 5th January at 8:30pm.

The drama, which premiered on BritBox in North America earlier this year,

Leo Suter (Sanditon) and Sofia Barclay (Ted Lasso) lead the series as unconventional detective duo DI Tommy Lynley and DS Barbara Havers, with the rest of the cast including Daniel Mays (Magpie Murders) as DCI Brian Nies, "the astute, suspicious Senior Detective at Three Counties Major Incident Team, whose aversion to Lynley is partly born of his own insecurities about class and partly because he knows he’s no longer the smartest person in the room".

Niamh Walsh (The English Game) stars as Helen Clyde, "an estate agent and Lynley’s former Oxford classmate whose romance with Lynley is sparked when their paths fatefully cross on a case".

The synopsis for Lynley reads: "Tommy Lynley is a brilliant police detective but an outsider in the force – simply by virtue of his aristocratic upbringing.

He is paired with Barbara Havers, a sergeant with a maverick attitude and a working-class background.

"With seemingly nothing in common and against all odds, the mismatched duo of Lynley and Havers become a formidable team, bonded by their desire to see justice done."

It's obviously not the first time that the books have been adapted for the TV, with The Inspector Lynley Mysteries originally airing on the BBC from 2001 to 2008.

^This is tonights plot line.

It's a good one - I won't spoil it for you.

I’m not keen on the actor portraying Lynley - he’s not coming across as natural and is quite irritating. He’s not effortlessly suave like the lovely Nathaniel Parker…

Love, love, love Nathanial Parker as Lynley, or in most things actually. Although, I always thought the character in the books would have looked like Rupert Penry-Jones.

I thought the books were a bit of a mixed bag. I remember borrowing one from the library in big print format, reading it, and when I reached the end thinking that ending was a bit abrupt, but did make sense, I suppose. A couple of months later, the librarian told me they had now got the second half of the book in big print format, and did I want to borrow it? I read it and found that it didn't add anything at all to the first half. Although that probably says volumes about my attention span.

I thought that was the weakest of the 4. The killer was obvious from early on and the lecturer being chucked in just for a plot twist seemed unnecessarily clunky.
DH got bored halfway through and was scrolling for the rest of it.

deeahgwitch · 27/01/2026 09:30

Lynley is rather easy on the eye don’t you think ?
I haven’t seen the final episode.

gingercat02 · 27/01/2026 09:39

He is, and a Viscount. What's not to like?

i agree (# blush)

Silverbirchleaf · 27/01/2026 10:56

Isn’t Leo Suter one of the names that comes up when the potential Bond actors are discussed?

An Earl no less!

Yes. In the books he’s an earl and his father has died IIRC. Here it seems his father is alive so I could be wrong!

Silverbirchleaf · 27/01/2026 14:17

I’m not fussed either way!

I assumed it was the same as the books & previous series.

Could be he's not yet an earl then.

Hadn't noticed whether or not his title was mentioned tbh.

According to Wiki he is the 8th Earl of Asherton in this series.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/01/2026 20:22

I think he said he was a count

I think in this series, his father is still alive.
He's also the younger brother.
His elder brother who would have inherited the title etc, has died.

This is a departure from the books (and original adaptations) where his father had died, he'd left the running of the estate to his mother, and he didn't use his "Asherton" title.

I seem to have missed most of that!

Possibly vaguely remember him commenting to Havers that they both had had a brother who had died.

(eta - I think it was when he had the conversation about lighting a candle for his brother)

It's been a long time since I read the books - maybe something I should do through spring/summer? - but IIRC in those he had a sister and a younger brother, the brother had issues with drugs..? 🤔

The original series stuck to the back story from the books (mostly).

BreakfastOfWaffles · 30/01/2026 14:00

It's taken me til now to realise that the girlfriend in the new series is the same person as his wife in the old version! I thought she was the friend of that character 🤣

diddl · 30/01/2026 14:20

I haven't read the books but that's certainly the case in the old series.

Not re watched all of it yet so don't know if the brother makes it through to the end!

Silverbirchleaf · 04/02/2026 22:18

Really enjoyed the series, and could have easily watched a couple more. Easy watching.

The only criticisms I’d have (if BBC are reading) are the episodes a little long, and there seems to be a lot if young, white men dying. Did feel sorry for the corpse in episode two. Not only did he not say anything, but he found in the water, so had to endure a cold, wet acting action, unless the other bictims.

Silverbirchleaf · 04/03/2026 21:37

Thought I’d update this thread as I’ve started watching the older series with Nathaniel Parker gas Lynley. It’s interesting to compare the two.

The most interesting thing for me is the social differences. Smoking is a minor subplot in the first episode (including smoking in a car), and there’s references to ‘the funny farm’ (mental institution) and being ‘a poof’ (gay) in later episodes. Also casual sexism against the female sargeant.

The basic premise is the same, but the storylines are different.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/03/2026 21:40

I need to watch the old one. I have on planner. Just so much other stuff I have
