Remade for 2025

It's time to bookmark another crime drama for your watchlists as it's now been confirmed just when Lynley (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/how-to-watch-lynley/) will be landing on BBC One

Described as a "contemporary update" of the original novels by Elizabeth George, the new four-part series (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/lynley-adaptation-bbc-first-images-newsupdate/) will premiere on BBC One on Monday 5th January at 8:30pm.

The drama, which premiered on BritBox in North America earlier this year,

Leo Suter (Sanditon) and Sofia Barclay (Ted Lasso) lead the series as unconventional detective duo DI Tommy Lynley and DS Barbara Havers, with the rest of the cast including Daniel Mays (Magpie Murders) as DCI Brian Nies, "the astute, suspicious Senior Detective at Three Counties Major Incident Team, whose aversion to Lynley is partly born of his own insecurities about class and partly because he knows he’s no longer the smartest person in the room".

Niamh Walsh (The English Game) stars as Helen Clyde, "an estate agent and Lynley’s former Oxford classmate whose romance with Lynley is sparked when their paths fatefully cross on a case".

The synopsis for Lynley reads: "Tommy Lynley is a brilliant police detective but an outsider in the force – simply by virtue of his aristocratic upbringing.

He is paired with Barbara Havers, a sergeant with a maverick attitude and a working-class background.

"With seemingly nothing in common and against all odds, the mismatched duo of Lynley and Havers become a formidable team, bonded by their desire to see justice done."

It's obviously not the first time that the books have been adapted for the TV, with The Inspector Lynley Mysteries originally airing on the BBC from 2001 to 2008.

I've seen them all - no spoilers, I promise.

I've also watched all the original ones (and own the DVD box set) and have read all the books, bar the most recent couple.

You can watch each one as a one-off. The main plot - "the crime" - doesn't flow from one episode to the other. The private lives of L and H do to some extent, though.

I really liked them - but if you've read the books you won't necessarily match them to the plot on the TV version.

I hope they make some more.

I’m enjoying it, I like the new Lynley. I’m very disappointed in the location as it’s not filmed in Norfolk. Just why would they film in Ireland?

Tax breaks probably?

BreakfastOfWaffles · 18/01/2026 05:39

I loved the original, this new version is ok, just another detective drama though. For me, the gap in poshness between Lynley and Havers isn't big enough. He's not posh enough and she's too posh. But you have to remember this one is being made 20 odd years after the original, and set in the modern day,so it's probably more realistic that an artistcrat who's chosen a career in the police force would present himself as middle class in order to fit in.

I’m still watching it as it’s easy on the brain, but it really is poor, I’m pretty much watching to see how bad it can get now. It’s very disappointing. I’m watching on the iplayer and it really has the feel of cheap daytime telly on C5, not a prime-time bbc 1 drama. So many errors that jar you out of the plot, uncovering a sparkly brand new mosaic, leaving an island in a boat watching it get small in the distance, getting out of boat and looking at it - suddenly very close again. A granite island off Norfolk. No Norfolk accents. The worse thing is that the main actors are just really, really bad though! Lynley is just wooden and although good looking totally lacking any charm or charisma - by episode 3 I’m no longer even finding him good looking. Although he has done his been given some dud lines. Totally lacking SA. Havers - dreadful, awful inconsistent accent, wooden, tries to be ‘chippy’ by tilting her head back in an annoying way, her being beautifully made up + fab hair makes her drab clothes look like a deliberate fashion choice and quite cool (but we are meant to think she dgaf). I like his girl friend though and Daniel Mays is always good, probably embarrassed by this though!
