Remade for 2025

It's time to bookmark another crime drama for your watchlists as it's now been confirmed just when Lynley (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/how-to-watch-lynley/) will be landing on BBC One

Described as a "contemporary update" of the original novels by Elizabeth George, the new four-part series (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/lynley-adaptation-bbc-first-images-newsupdate/) will premiere on BBC One on Monday 5th January at 8:30pm.

The drama, which premiered on BritBox in North America earlier this year,

Leo Suter (Sanditon) and Sofia Barclay (Ted Lasso) lead the series as unconventional detective duo DI Tommy Lynley and DS Barbara Havers, with the rest of the cast including Daniel Mays (Magpie Murders) as DCI Brian Nies, "the astute, suspicious Senior Detective at Three Counties Major Incident Team, whose aversion to Lynley is partly born of his own insecurities about class and partly because he knows he’s no longer the smartest person in the room".

Niamh Walsh (The English Game) stars as Helen Clyde, "an estate agent and Lynley’s former Oxford classmate whose romance with Lynley is sparked when their paths fatefully cross on a case".

The synopsis for Lynley reads: "Tommy Lynley is a brilliant police detective but an outsider in the force – simply by virtue of his aristocratic upbringing.

He is paired with Barbara Havers, a sergeant with a maverick attitude and a working-class background.

"With seemingly nothing in common and against all odds, the mismatched duo of Lynley and Havers become a formidable team, bonded by their desire to see justice done."

It's obviously not the first time that the books have been adapted for the TV, with The Inspector Lynley Mysteries originally airing on the BBC from 2001 to 2008.

I have read quite a few of the books and watched the original series. I quite enjoyed this but I think you probably have to approach it as just another murder mystery series with no preconceived ideas that it will in any way resemble the books. (for instance I hadn't read this book but a quick Google search tells me that although it was indeed set on an island it was actually Guernsey not somewhere off the coast of Norfolk).

I loved the original, but this just feels like a bit of a pale imitation. They seem to have "de-poshed" Lynley, and now he's just good looking and middle class. And Havers should be much more sympathetic.
Nathaniel Parker and Sharon Small had such great chemistry - not romantic, but just as a team who became friends - whenever he called her 'Barbara' it was very emotional.
I recommend anyone to watch the original series on iplayer, it was fab.

There's a pilot episode before that one.

Called A Great Deliverance.

Might take up two eps actually.

I started to watch after watching Lynley.

I have no desire to binge Lynley.

I will be rewatching the originals though!

I haven't read the books. I liked the old series but I got a fed up with the woman/women in his personal life. Maybe they are in the books. I thought last night's was ok and I'll look again next week.
N. Parker, once a Gabriel Oak in 'Far from the Madding Crowd', and L. Suter, once young Whatshisname in Sanditon 1. Memories, memories.

diddl · 06/01/2026 10:39

but I got a fed up with the woman/women in his personal life.

Yes!

I think a few books might have been written since that series ended so I wonder if the new series might be adapting those & interweaving some back story?

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/01/2026 11:12

Seem weird to remake after 25yrs

I was sadly disappointed.
I love Daniel Mays and he was watchable. The other 2 - wooden.

DP walked in when I was trying to get into it and said "is that filmed on a strict budget?".

Gave up. So wanted it to be good. Love a good crime drama.

diddl · 06/01/2026 14:05

I watched it for the mystery but the characters didn't grab me.

Still remember Haver's parents from the original though.

billysboy · 06/01/2026 14:21

nice car

bumphousebump · 06/01/2026 15:24

Nice car is my reaction too so far…don’t really remember the original, probably watched it occasionally. It seems very cliched and wooden so far.

dontcallmelen · 06/01/2026 16:19

I didn’t hate it will give it a few more episodes, was a fan of the original series as pp said the chemistry between Nathaniel Parker & Sharon Small was a joy to watch Yy the love interest in the old series always confused me I could never keep up with who “Tommy” was actually involved with, I’ve never read the books though will put on my reading list.

I think the pilot had a different actress as Lynley's soon-to-be wife. I think a young Henry Cavill was in this (or perhaps a slightly later episode?).

tinyspiny · 06/01/2026 19:10

We watched the original series last year and Nathaniel Parker is excellent in the role , I will give the new one a go but I’m not holding my breath .

tinyspiny · 06/01/2026 20:06

Well I’ve now tried it , we got about 30 minutes in and have given up , it’s dreadful .

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/01/2026 21:50

Seems those who watched the original are finding this hard to watch

Not seen the original but enjoyed this although BBC casting rules ( the villain must always be white) make sorting out the suspects easy.

Namechangedforthis25 · 07/01/2026 02:11

The lead actress is the daughter of a billionaire! Not sure about her being cast as a working class girl to be honest

Yes, the surname was a clue…and the Daily Mail report she is indeed related to the founders of Barclays Bank. I think she’s fine in this.

Privileged background or not, I thought she was a bloody awful actress, and came across more like a stroppy teen than a supposedly experienced detective. Very unconvincing.

berlinbaby2025 · 07/01/2026 10:40

Watched episode one and I don’t think I’ll continue. The case was boring, the two leads had no chemistry and there was the usual BBC box-ticking. I think Leo Suter is going to be a big star.

Lzzyisgod · 07/01/2026 10:41

I loved the original (recently rewatched) especially the episode where they go to Tommy's ancestral home. NP and SS were so well cast it was always going to be a tough ask to live up to.

It's watchable and I'll watch the whole series as this is very much the TV I like to indulge in but I think ive seem better series on C5 more recently tbh.
