Remade for 2025

It's time to bookmark another crime drama for your watchlists as it's now been confirmed just when Lynley (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/how-to-watch-lynley/) will be landing on BBC One

Described as a "contemporary update" of the original novels by Elizabeth George, the new four-part series (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/lynley-adaptation-bbc-first-images-newsupdate/) will premiere on BBC One on Monday 5th January at 8:30pm.

The drama, which premiered on BritBox in North America earlier this year,

Leo Suter (Sanditon) and Sofia Barclay (Ted Lasso) lead the series as unconventional detective duo DI Tommy Lynley and DS Barbara Havers, with the rest of the cast including Daniel Mays (Magpie Murders) as DCI Brian Nies, "the astute, suspicious Senior Detective at Three Counties Major Incident Team, whose aversion to Lynley is partly born of his own insecurities about class and partly because he knows he’s no longer the smartest person in the room".

Niamh Walsh (The English Game) stars as Helen Clyde, "an estate agent and Lynley’s former Oxford classmate whose romance with Lynley is sparked when their paths fatefully cross on a case".

The synopsis for Lynley reads: "Tommy Lynley is a brilliant police detective but an outsider in the force – simply by virtue of his aristocratic upbringing.

He is paired with Barbara Havers, a sergeant with a maverick attitude and a working-class background.

"With seemingly nothing in common and against all odds, the mismatched duo of Lynley and Havers become a formidable team, bonded by their desire to see justice done."

It's obviously not the first time that the books have been adapted for the TV, with The Inspector Lynley Mysteries originally airing on the BBC from 2001 to 2008.

Having put aside the ludicrous concept of the Norfolk Island behind me and having been told it is filmed round Dublin, I tried suspending disbelief and the next two episodes were not so bad, although there were moments 😬 After all, it is just some ripping yarns set anywhere.

I thought Episode 4 was rubbish though. ☹️

Clawdy · 08/01/2026 19:45

Quite enjoyed it, fairly standard detective drama with usual arguing partners who will become great friends! Would have preferred just an hour to one and a half, though.

Tallisker · 09/01/2026 17:08

Not keen on her, but I rather like watching him. Bugger the stories (shallow as a puddle) 😍

diddl · 09/01/2026 17:14

How many have been broadcast?

I haven't got past the first one!

I've finally watched Episode 1. It's OK, but a bit...bland? I found the background music annoying, pointless and intrusive. The plot was OK. I warmed up to Lynley but not to Havers - book Havers is chaotic, badly dressed, a heavy smoker and a consumer of junk food. This version of Havers is too neat and tidy for my liking. Neither actor has the presence of Parker and Small, but the rest of the cast are instantly forgettable too, imvho.

I noticed Elizabeth George is a producer.

I'll carry on watching, but with no great excitement or anticipation.

diddl · 09/01/2026 21:50

Bland, yes!

Whoops! Sorry! 😳 Binged the lot while I was knitting. I thought they had all been shown.

It will be interesting to see what a more leisurely view point will be.

NewAgeNewMe · 10/01/2026 06:31

I’ve watched the first two. First the other day and one at 3am this morning as I couldn’t sleep. No spoilers apart from not a patch on Nathaniel Parker and Sharon Small. But if I watch it without them in mind, it’s passable. However I didn’t rate the Helen actress in that. (The second one, there were a couple I think).

I’m trying to remember the books which I read years ago. But can’t.

ill watch the other two at some point. Probably at 3am again, as struggling to sleep at the moment.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/01/2026 06:38

So many have seen the originals and comparing which is fair enough

I haven’t seen so can’t

Lesley Vickerage.
She was very annoying iirc.

Not sure if it was a bad script, storylines or her?!

There were three altogether!

Emma Fielding was just in the pilot.

I watched it again recently & loved her!

Then in series 5 I think it was Catherine Russell.

Quite liked her too iirc.

2Rebecca · 10/01/2026 13:19

I hadn’t seen the originals but am watching them now. Much better casting and dialogue. Agree theiron and steal comment was just stupid.

Yeah the Lesley Vickerage version of Helen was really annoying and whiny. I much preferred the actress from the pilot as Helen. I wonder why she was changed? I can't remember the 3rd one at all.

Anthony Calf was Simon St James I think in the pilot. He was replaced too. Confused

2Rebecca · 10/01/2026 16:07

Strange they changed her as when I was watching the non pilot episodes I was trying to work out who this awful woman was as the programme didnt introduce her properly. It took several episodes to realise she was the best friend’s wife. I thought she was some other random woman he fancied.

diddl · 10/01/2026 16:45

I thought that the best friend's wife was only in the pilot?

2Rebecca · 10/01/2026 18:42

I am completely confused then. Who is the woman he is mooning about with all the children in episode 3? There seem to be a lot of very similar looking women with short dark hair that he fancies.
