im not sure about this but The Radio Times awarded the series five stars and made an early prediction that it could already be the ‘best show of the year’.

‘Waiting for the Out is a fascinating, informative, funny, poignant, piece of work, one which stands out amongst the overwhelming crowd of scripted series viewers now face choosing between,’ its review read.

DAN has got a new job teaching philosophy in a man’s prison, he’s nervous. He’s also very conflicted whether he wants to become a dad especially if their own father has sent to Jail when he was a young boy.

The synopsis has teased the following of what viewers can expect: ‘Each week, Dan leads discussions about dominance, freedom, luck and other topics that have troubled philosophers for thousands of years – topics that gain a new meaning when seen through the prisoners’ eyes – both igniting passions and creating tension.

‘Through his work, Dan begins to dig deeper into his own past – growing up with a father who ended up in prison, as did his brother Lee and uncle Frank.

Dan took a different path, but his time working in a prison begins to make him worry, obsessively, that he belongs behind bars just like his father.

As Dan’s personal crisis deepens, his actions begin to threaten both his own future, and his family’s.’

I just watched episode 1 and quite liked it, it's different, plenty of food for thought!

the80sweregreat · 03/01/2026 22:28

I need to watch from the start , but what I saw I liked.
Has some good actors in it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/01/2026 22:43

All I can say is it is very engaging.
Trevor from Eastenders gone by is in it and he is a very good actor.

LemograssLollipop · 05/01/2026 03:55

Binged this today as was feeling under the weather. Highly recommend. It's a mainly male cast and wonderfully acted. I tend to choose shows with female leads. Set in a prison, it deals with some difficult topics.

Didn't realise it was Trevor from EE, thanks @the80sweregreat

Watched the first episode and it looks very interesting. Having a close relative with severe OCD I am finding his checking difficult to watch. It has been portrayed very accurately

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/01/2026 16:25

The acting is fantastic. The lead, Josh Finan, was also the gormless druggy in The Responder - completely different type of character. And Stephen Wright who plays his brother was the sweet flatmate Ben in I May Destroy You. They are so versatile. It's almost unbearable to watch at times, but I am loving it.

zeus wanted to punish epimetheus for giving fire to humans? Basic error. Unwatchable after that.

Blueskiesnotgrey · 11/01/2026 13:18

This was excellent I thought, really moving.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/01/2026 14:18

So true. As someone also with OCD (thankfully successfully under control), I “felt” the way it is portrayed in this, I thought it was incredibly real. I used to do the photograph thing, and relate so much to the what if fears depicted so well (though a difficult watch).

purpleme12 · 12/01/2026 08:54

I've just realised the main actor in this played Gerry Adams in Say Nothing which I wanted only a couple of weeks ago

I didn't even recognise him!

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/01/2026 10:14

I think I found e2 good as the way it showed an addict and how the brother supported the girl amber ? And looked after her

I was sad that she drank after 6w

It would be so much easier if he just gets rid of his gas oven.

And get an electric one or even an air fryer
