im not sure about this but The Radio Times awarded the series five stars and made an early prediction that it could already be the ‘best show of the year’.

‘Waiting for the Out is a fascinating, informative, funny, poignant, piece of work, one which stands out amongst the overwhelming crowd of scripted series viewers now face choosing between,’ its review read.

DAN has got a new job teaching philosophy in a man’s prison, he’s nervous. He’s also very conflicted whether he wants to become a dad especially if their own father has sent to Jail when he was a young boy.

The synopsis has teased the following of what viewers can expect: ‘Each week, Dan leads discussions about dominance, freedom, luck and other topics that have troubled philosophers for thousands of years – topics that gain a new meaning when seen through the prisoners’ eyes – both igniting passions and creating tension.

‘Through his work, Dan begins to dig deeper into his own past – growing up with a father who ended up in prison, as did his brother Lee and uncle Frank.

Dan took a different path, but his time working in a prison begins to make him worry, obsessively, that he belongs behind bars just like his father.

As Dan’s personal crisis deepens, his actions begin to threaten both his own future, and his family’s.’

I guess he'd find something else to fixate on even if he did

I've just realised the main actor in this played Gerry Adams in Say Nothing which I wanted only a couple of weeks ago

I didn't even recognise him!

He was also Casey's gormless sidekick in The Responder. He is a seriously good actor. So versatile.

I agree with you. The person I was watching it said the same and it seems so obvious, but unfortunately OCD is not logical.

It would be so much easier if he just gets rid of his gas oven.

And get an electric one or even an air fryer

Im afraid that is exactly what not to do with OCD! The disorder doesn't just go away like that. The anxiety has to be faced. Unfortunately as said above if he does manage to overcome the gas cooker difficulty another one will most often pop up. It is a horrible and debilitating condition.

Redgooseberry · 22/01/2026 10:59

@lazymum99 so true and ocd is still very misunderstood and in its severe form is extremely debilitating.

I related to episode 2 and him trying to find out what happened to the dog. The obsessive searching and fear behind it. I made myself very late for work once as I thought I saw a loose dog run into the woods beside a road. I drove on but several miles later I was compelled to go back and look for the dog. My mind was full of what ifs and if something bad were to happen to the dog, upsetting dogs owners, dog causes accident, people injured - catastrophic thinking - but I had to go back or it would have been on my mind constantly. And anything bad would have been my fault as I could have prevented it. That was my ocd thoughts (fears).

I felt that Dan was fearful of what would happen if he didn’t at least try to find what happened to the dog.

I get he would fixtate on something else

but least he knows house wouldn’t burn down

You have rationalised his anxiety. Not possible to do when your brain is wired this way with OCD. The rational part of him knows this is a ridiculous worry but it won’t move from his head.
Sorry I have taken the thread in another direction. Didn’t mean to go on about it. But OCD is one of the least understood mental illnesses.

Personally I think the ocd element is very much part of the discussion. Rarely have I seen it portrayed so accurately. It really is misunderstood, as evidenced daily with references to being ‘a bit ocd’. It is not rational. Depending on your fear it will manifest itself in different ways.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/01/2026 18:55

Fine to go on about it 😘

he doesn’t seem worried that he locks the door for example and someone breaking in

so thinking (tho seemed wrongly) that he he got rid of the item (gas stove) that is causing issues it may help

making him hours late for a meal. Lying to people - he needs help

OP posts:
lazymum99 · 22/01/2026 21:09

He certainly needed help.
Did you notice him opening and shutting the locker numerous times to check it was locked.
Being late for literally everything because something is causing you difficulties with leaving the house is hugely common. And leads to losing jobs etc. Missing deadlines, trains, planes and the start of exams. I’ve seen it all with my relative. It has a severe impact on quality of life

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/01/2026 21:21

I thought the locker was as he wanted to check his phone again to check the oven

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 22/01/2026 22:01

Yes it was to check his phone
All part of his OCD
Cos he doubted everything

The way I see it is that it all depends why he’s fixated on the gas oven. And not, as you say, the door. Maybe if something happens with the gas cooker, his fear isn’t necessarily for HIS property, but that a fire or explosion or whatever could cause harm to others. The socket switch in the prison for example, he is compelled to switch it off as if he doesn’t, fear of fire again causing harm to others. The obsessive search for the dog - fear that if he didn’t find it the prisoner might harm himself. And he could have prevented it. OCD to me is all about fears and doubts, need for certainty, compulsions to neutralise the fears etc etc. It’s a torturous thing. Also for those close to the sufferer.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/01/2026 00:08

ocd is very complex

Just finished watching the last episode, but as this thread is no spoilers, I won't post anything about the content.

I will just say it was very thought provoking all round and some great acting too 👏

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/01/2026 21:20

That’s what I said @Meredusoleil. Very thought provoking. Hope will be a s2

got confused here and started when it was on tv, and it turns out it wasnt episode 1!
never mind, will go back to it
i think i started on episode 4

moto748e · 26/01/2026 12:19

Watching the first ep last night. This need s a bit of a reset after watching most recent TV series; this is Drama with a capital D. It's pretty stagey (could easily have imagined that ep as a theatre production), but interesting. I imagine few prisons are filled with philosophy buffs like this one, though.

the80sweregreat · 26/01/2026 12:22

The one playing the hard man prisoner with his own take on philosophy was also nasty Trevor in Eastenders. He is a very credible baddie with a sinister side ! Plays it well though
