im not sure about this but The Radio Times awarded the series five stars and made an early prediction that it could already be the ‘best show of the year’.

‘Waiting for the Out is a fascinating, informative, funny, poignant, piece of work, one which stands out amongst the overwhelming crowd of scripted series viewers now face choosing between,’ its review read.

DAN has got a new job teaching philosophy in a man’s prison, he’s nervous. He’s also very conflicted whether he wants to become a dad especially if their own father has sent to Jail when he was a young boy.

The synopsis has teased the following of what viewers can expect: ‘Each week, Dan leads discussions about dominance, freedom, luck and other topics that have troubled philosophers for thousands of years – topics that gain a new meaning when seen through the prisoners’ eyes – both igniting passions and creating tension.

‘Through his work, Dan begins to dig deeper into his own past – growing up with a father who ended up in prison, as did his brother Lee and uncle Frank.

Dan took a different path, but his time working in a prison begins to make him worry, obsessively, that he belongs behind bars just like his father.

As Dan’s personal crisis deepens, his actions begin to threaten both his own future, and his family’s.’

It does have a kind of theatre show feeling doesn’t it.
I love how you can you see Daniel thinking.

moto748e · 26/01/2026 12:27

I don't watch 'Stenders, but he's one of those TV faces that you recognise but can't put a name to.

the80sweregreat · 26/01/2026 13:11

Trevor from Eastenders was also in Chernobyl which was on Netflix over Covid times.

MokaEfti · 26/01/2026 13:40

I’m watching this and really enjoying it - the main guy is a great actor, thanks PP for pointing out he played Jerry Adams in that other thing which I did watch but never would have guessed it was the same guy !

amoosebouche · 26/01/2026 14:16

Incredible TV / acting but the (brilliant) depiction of OCD made for very uncomfortable viewing.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 26/01/2026 17:04

the actor playing dan is from that great police series with Martin Freeman
his brother I may destroy you and blue stone 42 also very recognisable but i dont watch EE

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/01/2026 18:09

Trev has a lilting voice which is recognisable

I'm afraid I'm OUT for this. Just the pre-credit sequence with the cooker in Ep #2 totally did my head in. Yes, I realise the point, and it's all very well done, and the rest of it is interesting, but i can't be watching any more of that. It's fingernails down a blackboard stuff.

PuppyMonkey · 27/01/2026 12:51

Loved this show, really thought-provoking. I think it will be commissioned for a second series.

A small and completely irrelevant criticism, but I do think most British households would have a plug-in electric kettle - not one that you put on the gas ring on the hob.Grin

MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/01/2026 13:16

I did think he should have got rid of the gas cooker

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/01/2026 13:39

@moto748e you didn’t like ?

yes the mini gas camping stove everyone he wanted a cuooa

a plug in kettle much easier

tho really not sure how the curtains Caught fire as not long enough to touch the camping ring

Yes - in this case it’s based on a memoir so will be interesting to read as well I think I might (though I have trouble reading more than a few pages before dozing off 😆)

“The Life Inside by Andy West, which details his experiences teaching philosophy in prisons while dealing with his father, uncle, and brother having spent time in prison.”

Why did he take that phone in ? So stupid

purpleme12 · 01/02/2026 21:14

It's his compulsion again isn't it

purpleme12 · 01/02/2026 21:18

I desperately want him to get some help

Yes he just couldn’t not do so even though he knew what would happen. Had he been able to connect as he was trying he would have left it. Scarily powerful.

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/02/2026 17:49

He was silly but just proves how hard he finds the world and his ocd

I loved this, especially Dan. There aren’t many series I watch without messing about with my phone or getting distracted but this had me transfixed.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/02/2026 09:09

I agree @Maryberrysbouffant. I’m well known for fiddling on phone while watching tv and then miss something

this had me enthralled. Esp as I wasn’t sure of it in my op

I’m the same. Transfixed describes it perfectly.
