KerryMum, was it hard to get him out of the caul? Was it soft like a spider's web, or did it have to be pierced.

I've always wondered. In Ireland it is veryconnected to good luck. I think you are supposed to keep it. BUT not to cook it with onions and red pepper. That is the PLACENTA. obviously...

cornsilk · 11/06/2008 22:54

I have never heard that. Something new learnt today anyway!

expatinscotland · 11/06/2008 22:55

DD2 had just a piece of it on her head.

My dad had a fair amount apparently, and it's true, he's had amazing luck, which continue to this day.

I thought DD2 had pooed and that was on her head! But Irish midwife who delivered her said, 'Ooo, there's a lucky lassie here today' and peeled it back off her head - it was like a cap over her head.

So what happens to the caul/amniotic sac the rest of the time? does it break down and just get pushed out as general mush?

GreenElizabeth - the membranes/caul stay attached tothe placenta and come out with that.

greenelizabeth · 12/06/2008 20:29

oh right. I remember the first time I gave birth I caught a look at the placenta. It was enormous. I couldn't believe it.... (tangent there).
