Forget about the fireworks, stay in as new series of Shetland starts next week!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002lt9z

I think those of us who have stuck with Shetland through thick and thin, just about filled up the last thread which is here https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4931718-shetland-season-8?page=40

Given how bad many 9pm slots have been recently this series may even be a pleasant surprise.

BBC One - Shetland, Series 10, Episode 1

The body of an elderly woman is found in the remote village of Lunniswick.

I watched a repeat of a C5 program this morning about Shetland Islands, the traditions etc and Mark Bonnar was narrating it

Yes, Alex overhears a murder confession, and politely closes the shed door on a fresh crime scene, and Lorna is on her phone while a suspect torches a different crime scene! And they don’t mention the ‘prank’ callout to one of the suspects’ houses to the chief detectives working on the murder!

It’s a sh*tshow at the Shetland police station. 😂

Also, can I just say how much I hate nosey shit stirring writer guy, Colin? He's so shifty and was getting into everybody’s business. I was hoping he would’ve died from the brick attack or at least rendered comatose for the rest of his life just so he couldn’t interfere with other people’s lives.

He’s the one who pointed the police toward that poor teenager. Then he’s going out at night interrupting the handover that would’ve absolved the holiday couple. And then he’s going into the shed searching for shit. I was so angry with him!

The weaselly bastard.

I thought he was going to be the next victim because he's too nosy!

He is spectacularly unpleasant. I had him tagged immediately as either the murderer or the self appointed witch finder who causes damage to bystanders. Perhaps there will be a post injury haemorrhage which gives him a personality transplant.

And that's not even including that Billy appears to have stolen paper evidence from the stash of Eadie Tulloch's papers Sandy was wading through.

Sandy made reference to a couple of things that were missing, and that might shed light on the source of the money -- I assume that's what Billy had snaffled and was putting into his home filing cabinet...?

(And yes, Colin is insufferable. He's insufferability in a waxed jacket. It says a lot for the fact that although we knew the Burnetts were actively engaged in drug muling by that scene where he appears and asks them if they say anything in the graveyard the night before, we still want to say 'Oh, sod off, nosy! Leave them alone!')

I have to say that in Colin's shoes, I would not be wandering out to investigate suspicious nocturnal activity by myself in a hamlet of about six houses that's had a murder and an arson attack within a couple of days, and nor would I be asking aggressively nosy questions of total strangers whose arrival coincided with the muder/arson, and nor would I be poking my nose into their shed and opening mysterious rucksacks with my back to an open door...

Indeed. His waxed jacket bristled with self-righteousness.

NewAgeNewMe · 22/11/2025 17:08

He’s the soldier in Guilt. Actor looked so familiar so I looked him up.

moto748e · 22/11/2025 17:11

He'll always be Howard in Fresh Meat for me!

diddl · 22/11/2025 17:25

I wondered about the daughter also.

Her husband has a temper on him!

When he was so pissed off with his pregnant daughter's boyfriend I was hoping that she would get in the car & they'd go away together!

Didn't he say "keep away from her"?

Couldn't help thinking that that horse had bolted!

So Eadie was murdered then a rope put around her neck & she was posed looking out to sea.

That would point to the boat going down wouldn't it?

ButWhysTheRumGone · 22/11/2025 17:56

Alternatively it might be the partner of Amy who is fed up of the whole let’s Sue social services stress. And killed Eadie so thre was no one to sue, not realising that Morag was also on Amy and her sister’s hit list. My money is on my original theory though.

Who is headscarf woman ? Blush

I too am hoping someone can explain who this is!

TwoDrifters2 · 22/11/2025 19:37

I think it’s Louise Brealey’s character.

Shetland 10 starts on 5 November 2025
IwantToRetire · 22/11/2025 19:46

Thanks.

I wondered if that was who was meant.

For me that isn't a "headscarf". For me it is the mind bogglingly sillyness of wrapping a bandage round your head, not for a purpose like holding back your hair from falling in your eyes, but some sort of excessive drappery!

I usually try and blot out my negative reaction to this "style" and am not sure why it annoys me so much.

I am all for a sensible head band, by the way.

I did think she was a bit suspect, but thought it was just my anti head drapery that made me negative towards her!

Yes, that’s who I meant. Lana’s daughter (in law?)

Lunde · 22/11/2025 21:48

Are we discounting the poet?

JingsMahBucket · 22/11/2025 22:32

Lunde · 22/11/2025 21:48

That guy portraying him is such a terrible actor! Completely ham fisted and overacts. And he needs to shave. His face just looks dirty. Ruth also getting close to him pisses me off too. It is so obviously a breach of common sense and protocol. I hate her character and Ashley Jensen anyway. Harrumph!

moto748e · 22/11/2025 22:43

He's really bugging me because, do you ever get that thing where you see someone on TV, and they remind you of someone so strongly, and yet you can't figure out whether it's another actor, or someone you know IRL? IIJM?

Pl242 · 22/11/2025 23:43

Agree it’s got to be something to do with the accident at sea but something must have happened recently to cause the murder. Something to do with someone uncovering that she had all that money and she sat on it when she and her friends (Lana’s family) are all poor maybe? Money will root back to something dodgy re her husband (billy won’t be corrupt but is doing something misguided to protect him ). I think there will be something suss re the poet (clear that tosh doesn’t really approve of Ruth blurring lines with victim’s son so that tension between the two of them will peak) but it won’t be him. There will also be something in busybody’s videos, either about all that or a separate thing re the girls in social care. Quite a lot of Shetland is ridiculous but I still enjoy watching it.

moto748e · 22/11/2025 23:54

It's funny that there's been more debate about this, despite most posters thinking it isn't all that, than other, arguably better recent series. I guess it's the residual pull of Shetland.

Am I right that the poet was the brother of one of the guys that died in the shipwreck?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/11/2025 06:21

Yes. Poet and bar owner is estranged son of murdered woman Eadie who worked with Billy's wife and Robert the dodgy police officer who worked with Billy and died years ago. Eadie had a long affair with Andrew Mair, who is her neighbour, husband of Lana, father of headband woman, father-in-law of man with temper and heart condition, grandfather of pregnant teenager. Each of these two families had a son who died in the storm many years ago.

Bad-tempered heart-attack man has disturbingly similar greasy hair and anger issues to his FIL.

deeahgwitch · 23/11/2025 08:55

Yes @Lundethe poet is the brother of the son that died at sea. However perhaps he isn’t, could he be the neighbour’s son - the man who had an affair with his mother, Eadie. Though I don’t think so, the affair started later.
