Forget about the fireworks, stay in as new series of Shetland starts next week!

I think those of us who have stuck with Shetland through thick and thin, just about filled up the last thread which is here https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4931718-shetland-season-8?page=40

Given how bad many 9pm slots have been recently this series may even be a pleasant surprise.

BBC One - Shetland, Series 10, Episode 1

The body of an elderly woman is found in the remote village of Lunniswick.

I liked the storyline. It kept me guessing and threw in a few red herrings.

I am glad that the £10k to Billy was shown to be a loan not a bribe. Hopefully, the tribunal or whatever will show that he and his wife repaid it and he’ll get sanctioned for hiding the bank statement and failing to report the heroin discovery. He was foolish and mendacious due to misplaced loyalty. It would’ve been wrong to morph him into a seriously bent copper.

The writing of Ruth is problematic for all the reasons already described by PPs. This is spoiling Shetland for me. I like Ashley J but Ruth hasn’t worked out, and I think it’s the fault of the writers.

I agree the Billy thing is actually quite good; it's not as straightforward as if they suddenly wrote him as bent, which would be unbelievable. It's complex and he seems to have acted for good reasons, and either genuinely thought or convinced himself that the money that became available for him to borrow at the same time was just a coincidence because he and his wife really needed it.
So not a bad person but a person doing some bad things for understandable reasons.

Bit like the young couple smuggling heroin because the woman's restaurant was in debt. Once in their clutches, couldn't get out.

I come and go regarding the banter and relationship between the leads, I have always liked Ashley J‘s deadpan humour in other things. The thing I am really starting to yell at the TV about is the apparent lack of a single lawyer on the island. Surely none of the interviews are legal?!

When she tried to get Ed to confess when they were in her house - did she really think it would hold up in court if he later denied it?

What I cannot understand is why the writing of good, strong female characters is so poor. It's a foolish game.

Sort of, but I think Billy was a bit less silly than them...

A solicitor is a choice. I think a considerable number of people interviewed by police choose not to have a solicitor. It’s legal as long as you’ve offered them the option.

I like Ruth's brother. I would like more development with him. Shame they had to scupper his marriage for the plot.

Not usual bothered by the clothes in Shetland, as others seem to be, but where from and who would wear the clothes that Ruth had on in some scenes?!

She needs to call in her character from Ugly Betty and get a make over.

Grin

The costume designer is on here, in style and beauty because people asked where to buy them.

I love some of the knitwear but the scarves are hundreds of pounds each.

Jumping in late, have just finished the series.
I was confused by Jess’s mum Isobel saying her childhood stopped due to the loss of her brother in the sinking of the Lintie, which happened 20 years earlier. But there’s no way that she was a child 20 years earlier, especially given that her daughter Jess is 17. She would have been in her mid-20s. The timeline just doesn’t work. Maybe I misunderstood something.

I had that thought as well!

If she had had Jess at 17 herself she would have been 14.

Maybe she had to drop plans for college/uni?

ETA
The actress playing Isobel is mid 40s & I think looks about that.

User198174 · 06/01/2026 14:13

At first I thought they finalised the script before casting, and forgot to change the date of the storm to fit the age of the 40-something actress they chose to play Isobel. But given the ages of Isobel’s parents, and Lana’s dementia, it seems implausible that their daughter would have been a child 20 years earlier.

corblimeyguvnr · 26/02/2026 00:53

I've just watched this but dear god the over acting. I miss Perez's quiet insight as opposed to Ashley who just jumps at anything.

StewkeyBlue · 11/04/2026 08:22

A ‘historic murder’ from 9 years ago?
On Perez’s watch, then!

JewelleryCat · 11/04/2026 08:48

I wonder if the bbc will want to make the book that has Perez in it which is set in Orkney
