Forget about the fireworks, stay in as new series of Shetland starts next week!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002lt9z

I think those of us who have stuck with Shetland through thick and thin, just about filled up the last thread which is here https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4931718-shetland-season-8?page=40

Given how bad many 9pm slots have been recently this series may even be a pleasant surprise.

BBC One - Shetland, Series 10, Episode 1

The body of an elderly woman is found in the remote village of Lunniswick.

Cal was involved from what I remember, but wasn’t James’ candle business being used (for shipping the drugs?) without his knowledge or consent?

(Tbh, I always struggled with James and Cal being brothers as the two actors could not look more unalike.)

diddl · 20/11/2025 10:55

Yes I think candles were involved!

Well I thought that ep was just terrible. The whole deal with the holiday couple, I just didn't buy a minute of it, they weren't credible characters at all. Just generally really poorly written, I thought.

ButWhysTheRumGone · 19/11/2025 21:23

Shetland is full of dodgy characters isn’t it. Isle of the shady despite the lack of trees.

Worse than Midsomer.....

..... or Saint Marie......

TennisWithDeborah · 20/11/2025 12:24

I think that if Billy turns out to be a wrong’un it’ll be a misstep on the part of the writers because there’s been no hint of it in any episode since 2013. I hope it’ll just be misplaced loyalty to his mentor Robert.

It explains the beautiful house that a desk sargeant and social worker have though if Billy was corrupted as a young officer - even accounting for cheaper house prices in Shetland ?!

You can buy a stunning house on Shetland for £300,000-400.000

This is currently on the market overlooking the sea (personally I might need to change some of the wallpaper)

The holiday makers were just there to muddy the plot - so now you have both murderers, drug dealers and the foster girl all running around in a hamlet of about 5 houses which means the sightings/timelines are unreliable

It will turn out to have its roots in a family conflict (they all do) and probably has something to do with the storm accident

2Rebecca · 20/11/2025 13:05

I suspect it will be the “good” sister but it has all got silly and confusing and the holidaying couple were unconvincing as either drug runners or people who would choose to go to Shetland and portrayed as far too cutesy and wholesome. I hope Gary tank commander is staying.

TennisWithDeborah · 20/11/2025 13:44

I’ll be honest, I liked the drugs mule couple. They struck me as typical of ordinary, decent people who got into a financial hole and then made very stupid decisions. The actors both played “nervous and hapless” very well.

Some of the writing was bad eg leaving the child asleep in the holiday home when a murderer was on the loose - no parent would’ve done that. It might’ve been better if they’d have made them a childfree couple.

Anyway, we can get down to the business of the killing now. Bring on next Wednesday!

musicinspring1 · 20/11/2025 14:24

Fair enough @C8H10N4O2 and @Lunde . I think I was comparing it to Perez’s house which came across as much smaller and darker (although in a location I would personally prefer !)

Lunde · 20/11/2025 14:29

There was one bit that I may have misunderstood

Last week - I thought the hapless drug mule couple went off in the car to meet the drug dealers leaving the dd alone

But at the start of this week's episode they seemed to be only in a field near the holiday house when writer guy interrupts them as when they run off he can see the lights on in the holiday house which is how he identifies them

??

I think the whole point is that they were not professional drug runners but a hapless couple who were forced into being drug mules when they got into debt with dodgy loan sharks in Edinburgh. Clearly they didn't choose to holiday on Shetland - the wife "chose" it - but the location was obviously picked by the gang as a quiet, out of the way hamlet where they could pose as holidaymakers and deliver the rucksack without observation .... but the plans were wrecked when the place was crawling with police after Eadie's murder and the neighbours were curtain twitching.

A good question for Shetland police to be asking is who owns the holiday let? - was it coincidence that the family rented it or did the drug gang chose/own it? but nobody seems to have thought of this.....

Lunde · 20/11/2025 14:51

The other thing which may or may not be significant is that there have been several scenes filmed at bus stops.

A couple with the young lad who was tiling Eadie's bathroom and yesterday with heart attack guy (Tom) getting off the bus... They seem like redundant scenes and give no local colour like the cake fridges - so why? Or perhaps the location manager has a thing for municipal bus stops.

I agree. A really weak episode.

IwantToRetire · 20/11/2025 18:33

I thought this episode better than last week, though am begining to think relying on Tosh making faces is letting the script writers not do their job properly.

Although in fact a lot of the "discussion" between Tosh and Ruth is some sort of morse coding each other via twitches.

But really came to say, you see I was right. Its Sandy who does all the real work!

And thought drugs couple story is plausible and as has been said, a lot of Shetland is the red herrings. Like that Scanivavia family. And murdered fishermand, which wasn't the main plot but yet another Shetland family where everyone hates everyone.

I dont think Billie will have done anything wrong, so they are bringing in a plot line about police corruption (or whatever) by having it about someone now dead.

I may have misheard but it sound like quite a lot of money for the time period.

Would drug dealing have been that lucrative whenever it was, or will be about closing their eyes to a bit of fish smuggling or something.

I think Shetland public transport have said you dont give us enough credit for our wonderful service, and asked that a bus stop be featured in every episode.

Billy. Oh Billy please don’t be corrupt.

Pinkbox · 21/11/2025 10:29

I was pleased to see that they portrayed Morag as a SW with her head screwed on re. the needs of children in care. I was concerned they were going down the lazy TV trope of troubled kids causing havoc.
My money is still on headscarf lady who used to fancy Sherlock. Unless the biting wind has frozen her face like that, she always looks shifty.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/11/2025 16:46

Headscarf lady knows a thing or two about being in care. She's been in The Archers recently, visiting her former foster carer.

deeahgwitch · 21/11/2025 19:52

Who is headscarf woman ? Blush

ButWhysTheRumGone · 21/11/2025 20:17

My money is on the daughter of the lady with dementia. I’m thinking the motive is anger at the affair between the victim and her father and the accident at sea involving her brother. She blames Eadie for the affair and how it hurt her mum, and Eadie’s son for the loss of her brother. She can’t take it out on the son because he’s dead so she kills Eadie and poses her looking out to see. Maybe the lads were in on the drug smuggling and it was all Eadie’s son’s idea and the brother would have been on the boat in the storm if not for him.

JingsMahBucket · 22/11/2025 09:06

@ButWhysTheRumGone ooh that is a great theory! I honestly think you may have cracked it.

JingsMahBucket · 22/11/2025 09:11

Also, can I just say how much I hate nosey shit stirring writer guy, Colin? He's so shifty and was getting into everybody’s business. I was hoping he would’ve died from the brick attack or at least rendered comatose for the rest of his life just so he couldn’t interfere with other people’s lives.

He’s the one who pointed the police toward that poor teenager. Then he’s going out at night interrupting the handover that would’ve absolved the holiday couple. And then he’s going into the shed searching for shit. I was so angry with him!

The weaselly bastard.

moto748e · 22/11/2025 12:08

I think he strikes a chord. We've all met these self-righteous busybodies IRL at some point.

deeahgwitch · 22/11/2025 12:22

I think you might be right @ButWhysTheRumGonere the dementia lady’s daughter.

SuccinctlySaidSusan · 22/11/2025 12:27

InMySpareTime · 20/11/2025 09:15

How on earth did the driving cop not overhear holiday wife’s murder confession in the car? He was like a foot away from the phone in an otherwise silent car and she wasn’t talking quietly.
The uniform police are not even slightly competent in lots of ways in this series, but that was seriously remiss.

Yes, Alex overhears a murder confession, and politely closes the shed door on a fresh crime scene, and Lorna is on her phone while a suspect torches a different crime scene! And they don’t mention the ‘prank’ callout to one of the suspects’ houses to the chief detectives working on the murder!
