Forget about the fireworks, stay in as new series of Shetland starts next week!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002lt9z

I think those of us who have stuck with Shetland through thick and thin, just about filled up the last thread which is here https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4931718-shetland-season-8?page=40

Given how bad many 9pm slots have been recently this series may even be a pleasant surprise.

BBC One - Shetland, Series 10, Episode 1

The body of an elderly woman is found in the remote village of Lunniswick.

Why is the woman of the holiday cottage family looking so shifty? (Also, holiday from hell even without the murder investigation on your doorstep — playing cards in a gloomy cottage, and a partner who doesn’t want to leave the house?)

Ruth fancies the pants off Shifty Poet Son, which almost certainly means he’s a wrong’un. Funny to look at Stuart Townsend now and think that if he’d looked exactly as he does in this role back then, he’d never have been fired from Lord of the Rings. He really needs to do something about the lighting in his pub.

Waxed Jacket Historian Neighbour reminds me disturbingly of the actor who plays Howard in Only Murders in the Building.

I realised that I do not think I have ever seen a scene where Billy was either outdoors in out of uniform!

Can Eadie’s £400 k possibly have anything to do with the smuggling Billy talked about? And is there going to be a story behind why Billy and Morag hadn’t seen Eadie in months, given that they were supposed to be ‘looking after her’? Or is her past in social work (knowing family secrets) relevant?

He certainly reminded me of someone (British). It was bugging me all the way through! I've never seen OMITB but it wasn't that guy.

Greg McHugh played Eddie Scott in The A Word, maybe that's who you're thinking of? Took me a while to think where I'd seen him...

So glad Perez is gone.

About as lifeless and interesting as a lump of lard!

More worried that cake fridges seem to have lost being part of the plots.

Total disgrace!

Sorry but I have to disagree with @IwantToRetirere Perez.
He was great.

moto748e · 06/11/2025 16:52

It was much more interesting with Perez and Duncan in it. And the story-lines were better back then too.

I'm calling the podcaster / historian bloke as the murderer.

The woman in the holiday cottage was a child under the social worker who died. And came to the area to talk to her about her past.

The son is a badun. Although it just looks like he's flirting.

The storm all those years ago will be at the bottom of it

The dead woman will have had a terminal illness which is why she was tidying up her affairs.

Why Ellie haddingtons character set fire to the chair/ house I've no clue!

Next body will be the informer from the start.

Im being strong and will not binge!!!!

I don’t think we can
thank you for the thread!

IwantToRetire · 06/11/2025 19:02

In advance of series comment. Perez gone - good. Duncan gone bad - keep hoping he will turn up and make another complete mess.

Started slow and was thinking on no. Dont think they needed to have a comedy episode before getting into the nastiness.

I have come up with a strange angle.

Did the woman who died in fact commit suicide? I wanted a close up of all those knots.

But yes lots of red herrings. All sorts behaving suspiciously, but as often turns out nothing to do with actual crime.

And so blatantly obvious what the romance thread will be.

Apparently poem was written for the episode. ?

I was so excited early on because I thought I had spotted a cake fridge in the background, but later turned out to be the bus shelter.

I thought it might be an assisted suicide, if she had a terminal illness. it looked a lot of work to DIY for a weak old woman. So surely some other imvolvement; either murder or AS.

But the video of her only a few weeks before she died showed her as coherent and animated.

Admittedly the ropes where quiet thick and hard to tie into knots, but I assume some sort of connection through family to trawling.

But expect as happens so often in Shetland there will be some old feud, or youthful betrayal behind it all.

And the holidaying family are trying to have some sort of time away to sort out a broken marriage or something. She clearly thinks it isn't going to work!

The young lad David I really felt for him. Used to be a solicitor and the ones that made one mistake and tried to put behind them sometimes just couldn’t.

daffodilandtulip · 06/11/2025 20:15

The background/personal storylines were better when Perez was in it. Now it's just Ruth moping about hating her life.

I watched a series on bbc2 where a couple went cold water swimming in various places around Scotland and the last episode they were on Shetland & swam outside of Perez's old house!

Recording this new series & will watch later.

That series sounds interesting @mambojambodothetango Ill have to look it up.

I think you’re talking about Miss Hooley from Balamory and her husband aka Jules Wilson Nimmo. It’s a lovely calm series with gorgeous scenery. DH really enjoyed it.

Why did he steal tiles from the DIY shop, though? I mean, he’s got wages now, and probably rates some kind of staff discount. He can buy tiles! If he’s terrified of returning to prison (I assume we’ll find he was sexually assaulted?) it seems like a strange move.

I do miss the Perez-Duncan duo, but I’m still enjoying the series. I wasn’t crazy about some of their later storylines (the trafficking series with Zezie and her mother and all those bodies floating in to shore was horribly dark and grim). I like Tosh and Ruth. And I don’t think Ruth’s love life is any more disastrous than Perez or Duncan’s ever were!

IwantToRetire · 06/11/2025 21:13

Agree about Tosh and Ruth. Because to begin with Ruth was quite rude, unsympathetic. Or says things outloud she probably should keep to herself, ie advising her boss to have telephone sex!

Its good to see 2 women working together on tv. Most series have jealousy between women as a standard feature.

as to disastrous love affairs, isn't this standard in Shetland. Well for the main characters. Background characters can have a happy domestic situation. but not the main characters.

Is Tosh even married anymore?

In the absence of Shetland I watched the Are Murders on Netflix - it's set in northern Sweden and has a similar vibe to Shetland.

I must check out the Ã…re murders - written by the same author that wrote the Sandhamn muders

Nice to see the let Billy out of the station for once

OMG! I Thought she was familiar! Yes, that was the programme. I can't swim but loved the scenery of the places they went, and their enthusiasm for their life was just lovely.

Anyway, with illegal mid week wine I have just watched the first episode and I really enjoyed it. I guess the drugs non bust boat and the death will be linked in some way, and the history archive man feels more dodgy than he is saying. I think the ex crim saw she had died, knew he would be implicated and kept quiet. I do wonder if his mum is more involved than we know. I feel Ashley Jensen character and the estranged son of the murdered lady might become an item

That's the way the script was pointing. With great big arrows.

I was all ‘Look! Billy owns clothes that aren’t his uniform!’

And the mother of the pregnant girl in Lunniswick is Molly from Sherlock.

They've found him a big old fleece so he doesn't have to squeeze into the tight police t-shirt!

There is a reason why Eadie's £400 k had not been touched in years.

Is there a will?

The countryside folks don't lock their houses in case anybody may need shelter. Old times survival and support.

apremoiledeluge · 07/11/2025 18:52

Is it a boat ride or a plane ride to get there ?

You can fly in (not sure from where!) as there's an airport at Sumburgh, at one end of the main island.

Otherwise, it's an overnight ferry from Aberdeen.

JewelleryCat · 07/11/2025 18:56

This might help for the flying. Not sure about the ferry information
