Forget about the fireworks, stay in as new series of Shetland starts next week!

I think those of us who have stuck with Shetland through thick and thin, just about filled up the last thread which is here https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4931718-shetland-season-8?page=40

Given how bad many 9pm slots have been recently this series may even be a pleasant surprise.

BBC One - Shetland, Series 10, Episode 1

The body of an elderly woman is found in the remote village of Lunniswick.

We had Blonde Tosh going round to see her late BF’s brother so that was backstory for her character. Presumably clearing the way emotionally for her to get with the poet.
I agree with a PP that Tosh’s grimaces are a struggle to watch.
The first interview with Lana was appalling, the two of them just kept on and on at her.

NorWouldTilly · 16/11/2025 12:27

I would have sacked them both instantly for dragging Lana out in her dressing gown.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 16/11/2025 12:31

Exactly Lana is a vulnerable adult, it's obvious to anyone that her dementia is rather advanced, nothing they would have got out of her would stand up in court. I'm glad the Fiscal pulled them up on it.

TennisWithDeborah · 16/11/2025 20:56

I liked Greg McHugh as the awkward, unsmiling student in Fresh Meat so it was pleasing to see him in this effectively playing the same role …but middle aged 😆 .

I agree that the treatment of Lana was egregious. How amazing is Ellie Haddington in that role though! I recall her as Don Brennan’s partner in Corrie. Motherland too. She’s had a good career.

The fiscal actor was great in Amandaland recently but he’ll always be Fingers!

Weird to see Billy in his weekend clothes with his beautiful wife.

Therefore the solution is that Tosh ditches Donny and she and Ruth have a baby together so they can have fun parenting scenes. (Only that would cause endless childcare issues, which is why the tv series aged Cassie in the first place, so maybe Donny should move in with them to help out…)

Or Tosh could have an affair with Ruth’s minister brother. Or the Fiscal? Is he Harry or was that the last one? I’ve lost track.

Yeah the books were much more fun with the shared parenting of Cassie after Fran was murdered and Cassie being only 6 or 7. It was fun with Perez being the "reliable" dad and then Duncan swanning in to play Disney dad.

The new Perez book has Perez and Willow juggling a toddler while running a murder case while Cassie has gone to Shetland for Christmas

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 17/11/2025 06:31

I was about to come on and say there's a new Perez book out. I thought she had finished them. So excited to learn she hasn't though.

I was thinking about the sisters being placed separately by Eadie.

Would they then have had no/little contact?

Was it to save Amy from Stevie??

Wonder how big a part Morag played?

NorWouldTilly · 17/11/2025 12:22

I’m wondering about Stevie and Amy’s parents … Where was their father (or fathers?) at the time they were removed from their apparently neglectful mother?

At this stage I wouldn’t be surprised to find Stevie had a hand in sabotaging that family even as a child …

Yes, if we assume Morag is the kind of nice woman Billy would have married (I mean, we hope!), then it seems likely that she separated the sisters for what she believed was a good reason (and deliberately sent the 'bad' sister off Shetland?) Unless she was being unduly pressured by Eadie Tulloch, or had for some other reason taken her eye off the ball professionally...?

Are we going to see a situation where Morag is forced to justify herself with Lunatic Stevie holding her at gunpoint?

My single favourite moment since Perez was replaced by Ruth was that wonderfully black comic monologue at the very start of Series 9, where it looks as if Ruth is just rambling on about how she came to take up the job on Shetland, and then the camera pulls back and we see she's being held at gunpoint by a strung-out Malcolm Kidd and is trying to calm him down so he doesn't shoot her like he did his brother.

moto748e · 17/11/2025 15:50

Heh! I remember that: nice touch. Not seen much evidence of that kind of style since, though.

deeahgwitch · 17/11/2025 15:54

I agree with you @TheBirches re the Ruth and Malcolm Kidd intro. Really well done.

diddl · 17/11/2025 15:59

Can't decide if Eadie's death will be to do with the sisters or the boat that had sunk.

In a possible plot twist, maybe Amy is the "bad" sister!😂

Clawdy · 17/11/2025 16:22

Eadie spelt like that is an unusual name. (Yes, I know it's a trivial point!)

ButWhysTheRumGone · 19/11/2025 21:23

Shetland is full of dodgy characters isn’t it. Isle of the shady despite the lack of trees.

apremoiledeluge · 19/11/2025 22:22

If you ever listen to 'Mark Steel's in Town' on Radio 4 he's done a couple of shows in Shetland - Lerwick and Unst. Probably on BBC Sounds? There's a few jokey references to the murder rate in Shetland!

Pinkbox · 19/11/2025 23:06

Ooh what does Billy know?

JustAMiddleAgedDirtBagBaby · 19/11/2025 23:09

If Billy and his t-shirt turn out to be corrupt I will be writing a stern letter. I don't know to whom, but it will be stern.

JewelleryCat · 19/11/2025 23:09

Pinkbox · 19/11/2025 23:06

Ooh what does Billy know?

I have a theory that as a younger officer, he took some money, didn’t want to say no to a senior officer and maybe that would show on the paperwork but then I thought Billy would never do that and he’s trying to protect the dead officers reputation and therefore Eadie and her reputation too

musicinspring1 · 19/11/2025 23:54

It explains the beautiful house that a desk sargeant and social worker have though if Billy was corrupted as a young officer - even accounting for cheaper house prices in Shetland ?!

Ilovetea33 · 20/11/2025 02:06

That breakfast with the perfect egg on top made me hungry. As usual, nobody was seen eating it.

And Stevie had to leave hers sitting there, I was shook!

InMySpareTime · 20/11/2025 09:15

How on earth did the driving cop not overhear holiday wife’s murder confession in the car? He was like a foot away from the phone in an otherwise silent car and she wasn’t talking quietly.
The uniform police are not even slightly competent in lots of ways in this series, but that was seriously remiss.

timoteigirl · 20/11/2025 09:25

Do you think Eddie Tulloch and / or James Cal's brother could be in drug business?

I thought that Cal & James had been dealing drugs in the series where Cal died?

Or had done so in the past?

Social worker and Desk sergeant would be reasonably well paid public sector jobs with pensions in most rural areas and they are in their 50s(?) so being paying the mortgage for a long time now. I had a snoop on Rightmove and I don’t think their house looks out of line. I suspect its more likely that Billy’s great mentor was on the take and he has misplaced loyalty or as a junior was persuaded to keep quiet about a “one off” which wasn’t.
