Forget about the fireworks, stay in as new series of Shetland starts next week!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002lt9z

I think those of us who have stuck with Shetland through thick and thin, just about filled up the last thread which is here https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4931718-shetland-season-8?page=40

Given how bad many 9pm slots have been recently this series may even be a pleasant surprise.

BBC One - Shetland, Series 10, Episode 1

The body of an elderly woman is found in the remote village of Lunniswick.

I prefer watching 2 or 3 episodes in a row, often subsequent nights as otherwise I just forget what has happened

lingmerth · 02/12/2025 00:16

I’ve just watched series 1-7 with Perez for the first time. Fast forward to Calder and Tosh and it’s not a patch on the original.
I thought Tosh was pretty useless under Perez and didn’t do much so how on earth she got promoted to inspector heaven only knows.
there’s no chemistry between the two women. We don’t care about them so don’t invest in them. Whatever Perez faults were he did show empathy and having his family around you saw a less abrasive side to him.
very disappointing that there’s nothing about Calder to like and Tosh is still weak.

moto748e · 02/12/2025 00:42

Perez may have been flawed, but he was a credible character, and DH is a much better than most of the current cast. And alongside that, the writing much weaker, as PP have said, it's hard to care much.

This is just your reaction. No "we" here.

I rewatch all series last year, and posted about it.

Was only too happy to see half cooked suet pudding Perez go and shed his dreariness elsewhere.

Far sadder that Duncan got caught out yet again by bad judgement.

The point is why have the writers let both Tosh and Ruth down with no story lines and just same old scenarios.

Its really an odd decision by not just the writers but producers.

Because if as the main characters they have no substance, or progressing back stories the series will end.

Did anybody watch Points of View? Somebody was praising Tosh's facial expressions. I'm not sure if he was entirely serious.

The original series were based on the Cleves books. The current ones are written by someone else often Paul Logue it seems like now although they give different writers different episodes which probably makes it more disjointed rather than 1 writer per series. Also lots of different directors. They make the plots much more complex too and unbelievable. I just watch it for the scenery now but miss Duncan .

Peregrina · 02/12/2025 09:47

Not all of the original series were based on the Cleeves books, but they did at least develop from where Cleeves left off. This series just seems a jumble of different episodes.

Yes, I kept staring at him (Louden?) and imagining him shot in black and white in closeup for a designer aftershave ad instead of buying a fish supper on the docks or looking shifty in a seafood processing plant.

He’s ridiculously pretty, with unnervingly symmetrical features. He might be the best-looking police informant in any tv series, ever…

Speaking of fish suppers, did anyone else shout 'Fifteen quid?!?' at the telly when he was fleeced charged for his food?
I mean, I live in London, and even I was shocked at that.
I was also appalled that he said no to salt and vinegar. What's the point of a fish supper without it?

dephlogisticated · 02/12/2025 12:22

Yesss £15 wtf? I live in the south and wouldn't pay that and he just accepted it (admittedly he was distracted by the whole drug dealing situation but still!)

NorWouldTilly · 02/12/2025 12:28

I did think it was surprisingly expensive!

deeahgwitch · 02/12/2025 14:22

I too couldn’t believe the price of the fish and chips 😮
However I have just checked a chipper I use and a haddock and chips is €18 😮
So similarly priced 😱

£12.80 for regular cod and chips at a chippie local to me (London Zone 2). Large portions, and it's a slightly fancy place (fancier than that one in Shetland anyway!).

Ilovetea33 · 02/12/2025 17:03

But he wasn't there for the fish supper, was he, it was to make contact for the drug deal. I don't remember, did we actually see him eat any of it?

Maybe Cora will sigh in her autopsy room and say that his last meal was salt- and vinegar-less fish and chips.

I don't know if he ate any. Point is though it was expensive!

I don't know if he ate any. Point is though it was expensive!

Maybe he’d have tried to claim it back as Police Informant Expenses?

LittleBitofBread · 02/12/2025 17:15

I would if I was stiffed for fish and chips in the line of duty!

Anyone else craving fish and chips now?

Tallisker · 02/12/2025 18:23

And they offered him salt and vinegar, not salt and sauce. Maybe that’s an Embra thing.

IwantToRetire · 02/12/2025 18:34

I thought it expensive, and wondered if in fact in smaller towns it is more expensive to run a chippie. But then it isn't as though the fresh fish ins't just there on their doorstep.

Any how I found this listing from round the UK from last year comparing fish and chips prices!

I think it’s quite telling that the £15 fish and chips have had more engagement on this thread than some of the plot points and characters 😂😂😂

Mammut · 02/12/2025 22:58

The price is realistic. Everything on the islands is more expensive.

Garamousalata · 02/12/2025 23:11

I’ve always loved Shetland but this series is pretty underwhelming.

Bring back Duncan and Perez.

Bring back good script writers who believe that women can be just as good and intersting as two men!

All the script development in this series has been about other characters.

Perez and Duncan would have been just as uninspiring if they had only been given the lines that has been eked out to Ruth and Tosh.

I was also horrified at the £15 fish and chips
