Forget about the fireworks, stay in as new series of Shetland starts next week!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002lt9z

I think those of us who have stuck with Shetland through thick and thin, just about filled up the last thread which is here https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4931718-shetland-season-8?page=40

Given how bad many 9pm slots have been recently this series may even be a pleasant surprise.

BBC One - Shetland, Series 10, Episode 1

The body of an elderly woman is found in the remote village of Lunniswick.

Louden:

https://app.spotlight.com/3570-8945-2206

I can only imagine his agent is just keeping him ticking over until Hollywood calls …

(I remember the first time I saw Alan Cumming in some tinpot British comedy series back in the dawn of time, and thought That man will go far …)

JingsMahBucket · 27/11/2025 15:49

SuccinctlySaidSusan · 27/11/2025 15:28

Yes, I kept staring at him (Louden?) and imagining him shot in black and white in closeup for a designer aftershave ad instead of buying a fish supper on the docks or looking shifty in a seafood processing plant.

He’s ridiculously pretty, with unnervingly symmetrical features. He might be the best-looking police informant in any tv series, ever…

He’s actually a professional model. A few weeks back I went digging around for info on him. He’s young and started getting alopecia a few years ago. Instead of being fired from modeling gigs, he’s embraced it and has been featured in a lot of campaigns.

I want to like a strong female lead and support a female double hander but I agree with previous posters they haven’t grounded Calder as well and without those connections it feels ‘off’. Perez’s grumpiness and short temper was offset by his relationships with Cassie and Duncan. I also agree the brother is completely wasted.
only 2 episodes left … will the tourist couple come back or are they just dropped now ? Pregnant girls mum is a fairly famous actress which does often mean they have a key role and so far she’s been mainly in the very dark background ?

Aren't the tourists on remand as drug mules?

Lunde · 27/11/2025 16:34

In the intro to yesterday's episode we saw Amy and Stevie with their mum before they were taken into care.

The mum was with a man in the living room who had shoulder length hair - could it have been Tom Jameson or Arthur Mair?

Was the mum murdered and made to look like a drug death? Same method as killed Louden the informant?

Did bent cop Robert make it all go away? Perhaps in return for £400,000?

Is that why Stevie was sent to the mainland? Because she was a witness to whoever being in the house? ... nobody else knew

Lunde · 27/11/2025 16:38

Just one more musing for the moment - is it possible that Billy was not involved but Morag was or he thinks she was? .... and he is attempting to protect her?

I don't totally understand why he didn't destroy the papers he took. Keeping them for insurance perhaps?

NorWouldTilly · 27/11/2025 16:42

Oooh - all of that, @Lunde!

Though I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Amy killed her mother … (Stevie would seem more likely but she wasn’t on the island at the time, was she?)

I admit I’m a bit hazy on the chronology. But the money must surely be related either to the deaths at sea, or to the reason why Stevie had to be bundled off the island pdq.

diddl · 27/11/2025 18:33

Are thee 2 more to go?

I think by the end I won't care who killed Eadie or why!

The video that Colin is shown watching.

What is Eadie talking about in that?

musicinspring1 · 27/11/2025 21:00

I have assumed 2 more to go as the previous series have all had 6 episodes but I’m not definite.
I am pretty sure Eadie was talking about the storm and her son dying in the video made by nosey neighbour. Is the storm the red herring at the beginning and its social work linked or is the storm still relevant because of the death being placed looking to sea ?
Ah so drug tourist couple on remand definitely won’t be back and aren’t relevant anymore unless the drug side plot links to the storm sea deaths and / or dodgy money ??

diddl · 27/11/2025 21:09

Oh yes, the storm, thank you.

For some reason I was thinking that she was talking about some festival or gala but I think that might have been Lana?

I'm also wondering if her being placed looking to sea was to make it seem about the storm when it wasn't.

StewkeyBlue · 27/11/2025 23:00

Well spotted @Lunde . The man with the longish hair
And that comment “we all have our secrets”.

Meanwhile C&T lied in an interview about evidence, told Stevie that Amy had been seen at Eadies - is that allowed? And Calder has co-erced an informant with bribery and blackmail, and got him murdered.

Dear oh dear.

moto748e · 28/11/2025 00:22

Are the police required to tell the truth when they are talking to suspects? I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't have thought so.

Pinkbox · 28/11/2025 15:50

moto748e · 28/11/2025 00:22

Are the police required to tell the truth when they are talking to suspects? I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't have thought so.

I thought they were in the UK, compared to the US where they seem to use lying as much as they like.

I think headscarf woman has been far too quiet and just standing there glowering in corners so she is my number one suspect for Eadie’s murder.

Calder should absolutely be investigated for how she treated the informant.

StewkeyBlue · 28/11/2025 16:19

OK, it seems police are not allowed to lie or claim they have evidence that they do not have, but they can ask misleading questions.

So no, telling Stevie that they had evidence that someone looking like Amy had been at the house is not allowed.

InMySpareTime · 28/11/2025 16:30

Technically Stevie is someone who looks like Amy and was seen by the house, so that bit wasn’t a lie, but Amy wasn’t under suspicion so that bit was a lie.

IwantToRetire · 28/11/2025 17:59

I think those who sentimentalise about Perez forget that Ruth was never likeable from the start. Added to which she was over loaded with "issues".

I cant remember what had gone wrong in London, but back home there was her relationship to her father, her brother, stupidly taking up with an old flame.

But agree that in terms of crime solving the writers are making her even more of a walking disaster. Her general lack of empathy was there from the start. If you remember she wasn't that nice to Tosh.

So its like they aren't bothering with developing her character. Rude at work, and getting invovled with men who all know each other!

At the moment all the other characters are getting better story lines, and think a lot of the acting has been great.

But very much doubt that such an angry and hurt young women who had had her life destroyed by social workers^ would end up being cuddled by one.

But the real story now is Billy. Although he doesn't know it.

^ Wasn't there a recent series based on a very similar story line about a woman who had been separated from her sister, and the impact on both of them. Fairly recent. I do remember thinking how terrible it had been for both of them.

Stopping mid series
It’s just not capturing my interest
Ashley Jensen is even worse than usual .
Supporting cast equally wooden and even the scenery can’t keep me watching .

JewelleryCat · 29/11/2025 17:07

I’m watching a C5 Christmas film called “Christmas in Scotland” and Billy is in it

Lunde · 29/11/2025 17:38

I think it's also important to remember that even the mighty Perez was not squeaky clean so we shouldn't over sentimentalise - didn't he advise Duncan how to move things at the crime scene when Donna died? (not realising the letter had been sent)

Sandy has done lots of daft things - including leaking crime scene photos

Peregrina · 30/11/2025 21:25

I am finding this series hard work. I am not sure whether I can be bothered to watch it to the end.

Have to go back and watch Perez on I player.

Only 2 episodes to go ...... you can make it!

musicinspring1 · 30/11/2025 21:45

I respect the willpower to not watch any more at this point in the series! Even though it’s definitely not been my favourite series I feel invested and would be ever so curious to not finish it!
The blurb in the TV guide for this Wednesday has swayed my opinion again but not sure if it’s a spoiler to talk about it here or not ?!

No spoilers please.

I like to come to each episode with an open mind.

And hint at what might be a plot development means that you watch waiting for signs of it. And sometimes get to the end of an episode and it never happened.

And as a result aren't really taking in what has happened!

Thanks

Yeah, it's a bit crap, but we've all hung in this far! 😁

NewAgeNewMe · 01/12/2025 06:08

Tbh had I done what I usually do and not watched till all recorded I’d have watched the first and then the last one. But only 2 to go so will watch them both.

Peregrina · 01/12/2025 07:54

That's a good idea. Wait until the series is finished and then watch again or even only the last two on i-player.
