So he doesn't joke in front of her because she doesn't like it but also, she's not happy that he jokes in front of others.

To be fair though you only say jokes when other people are around isn't a huge leap though. He clearly wouldn't say it to just her. Sounds like he relies on cliches a lot for humour.

I think a large part of this show is about men having very fragile egos. They get very upset when called out.

Elements of their personality are just too jarring
