A TV documentary that follows the work of a police force will show how the investigation into the actions of a teenage killer unfolded.

Nicholas Prosper used a shotgun to kill his mother Juliana Falcon, 48, his brother Kyle, 16, and his 13-year-old sister, Giselle, at their home in Luton on 13 September 2024.
The 19-year-old, who was arrested in the hours after the murders, was jailed for 49 years in March. A trial heard he intended to carry out a shooting at his former primary school.

The Channel Four series 24 Hours in Police Custody, which follows the work of investigators at Bedfordshire Police, will feature the case over two nights on 5 and 6 October.

Nicholas Prosper jailed for at least 49 years for Luton triple murders

After killing his family in their tower block in Luton, Nicholas Prosper planned to carry out a mass shooting at his former primary school.

Wow she got away with it didn’t She! Even the police officer seemed to think so. . Terrible. I feel,so,sorry for Josh’s mum. But so glad she got custody

so in the end was all for nothing because the boy’s mum didn’t get custody. Am amazed a court gave the grandmother custody though if the mother wasn’t charged with anything.

Maybe she prevented them from taking him to the US and they decided to go anyway with the other kid and let her have sole custody?

Why did Gary’s ex get custody of the little boy? She wasn’t a blood relative? Or was she Josh mum? I’m confused.

Edited

She is the child's paternal grandmother!

yes she is - she’s his grandmother, mum of Josh

I’m so confused - if Sam and her husband weren’t charged with anything, why did the grandmother get sole custody (though I’m delighted she did)

namechange272727 · 09/12/2025 22:05

@WineBeforeWhineshe’s the paternal grandmother.

I used to work as a social worker in the family courts and am amazed she got full custody, that must have been a real uphill battle, good for her.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 09/12/2025 22:06

Gary's ex is also Josh's mum so she got custody of her own grandson and certainly is a blood relative.

I suspect you’re right. So ultimately the mother chose her new partner over her son anyway!

Cocolapew · 09/12/2025 22:09

I think the parents chose going to the US over staying with the child in the UK. I got the impression that the Grandmother was going to court to keep him in the UK?
Poor boy, so much trauma.

WineBeforeWhine · 09/12/2025 22:10

Ok ta I understand now.

what a horrific tale though, I was pleased he got 30 years, anything less would have been wrong.

dapsnotplimsolls · 09/12/2025 22:11

That poor boy - at some point he'll know that his grandad killed his Dad and his other grandad. And his Mum preferred to fuck off to the US rather than stay with him.

RosePetalsRose · 09/12/2025 22:12

I feel sorry for the boy. He’s lost his Dad and also his Mum.
The boy should be with his mother and sister if the mother has not been found guilty of anything.

Rinoachicken · 09/12/2025 22:12

I wonder if there was all sorts of evidence that wasn’t enough for a CPS charge of conspiracy to murder, but was admissible for family court to show things like likely parental alienation (how she spoke about the dad in texts etc) intent and preparation to flee with the child in breech of the court order (they mentioned that in the programme, that she’d been researching how to get a child out the country without a passport etc). Along with the emotional welfare of the child to be removed from his UK life after the violent loss of his father and grandfather, at the hands of his other grandfather, and potentially then being cut off from his dads side of the family in those circumstance and the massive impact that would have on him.

Or maybe mum was so eager to make a run for it that she didn’t really fight it, just fled while she still could to the US with her other child and new US husband.

Wow I burst into tears when it was revealed Josh's mum got awarded custody of her grandson. It was very telling when the couple was arrested and were asked who could look after the children, that they didn't suggest Stephen could.

Just because she wasn’t found guilty doesn’t mean she’s innocent.

That was very damning.

Toddlerteaplease · 09/12/2025 22:22

If Sam cared for her son, surely she’d stay in the country so she could at least have supervised contact with him. What would you bugger off to another country? Hopefully the boy thrives with his grandma and has appropriate support as he grows up.

Dazzlemered · 09/12/2025 22:22

Why didn’t they let us see the interview room or hear their answers?

Also I’m sure his relative said something about killing when he was reading those txts out and stumbled on his words when they asked him to repeat it.

I don’t think she could possibly be described as a good mum.

OnePearlHelper · 09/12/2025 22:31

That was one of the hardest things I have watched.

BarmyFotheringay · 09/12/2025 22:37

Maybe grandmother got custody because Josh was awarded custody before he was murdered.

Do we know why Sam, husband and family were staying in a hotel ? And Paul didn’t seem very surprised that a bunch of armed police were suddenly outside his room telling him to come out

I was confused by this also, but towards the end of episode 2, they mentioned that the couple had sold their house & living in hotel, prior to hopefully leaving for US.
This is beginning to be one of the best programmes on TV. I remember when it first started, it was a bit mundane & typically about the usual low-life’s, petty criminals, etc. I think with the ubiquity of body cam footage & CCTV, there is so much material to use. A combination of really good storytelling woven together with real life video. Must take tremendous film-editing skills, tho. It also shows police in v good light. I am sure editing also comes into play. They certainly need the positive publicity, esp after the Charing (or was it Kings?) cross police station horror show!

Can’t believe the mum thought of taking him away from his dad in the first place. I wouldn’t even consider moving to another part of the country from my dc dad. Let alone another country.

What did she think would happen when she married and had a child with a US airman?

It’s surprising the number of people who do this.

I don’t think he was though, was he? I think he had access - the court case was to prevent Sam from taking the son to America

She wasn’t charged with conspiracy because the CPS decided there wasn’t enough evidence. However it’s very clear that she wished her ex to be dead and goaded her father into murdering them. It would be interesting to see the court reports about her when she had to try to take him to USA and was denied.

This is what makes it all so crazy. It completely reeks of entitlement (and I hate using that word). The courts are not going to agree for a child to be taken away to another country from their father and extended family when there are no safeguarding issues. They would have always ruled in the child's interests.

I know I may be over simplifying things here but the killer came across more like he was angry that he had been 'beaten' by someone who would dare challenge him, and his ego was massively dented by losing money and their custody battle. I can't fathom how you would concoct such an idiotic plan and think it would have resulted in a good outcome for anyone, especially the child. I think he just had a pure hatred and jealousy for these men because as the grandmother said, they were decent guys and good fathers and were everything he wasn't.
