Yes. It’s nice that everyone is showing concern for Ellie but if her support network didn’t believe she could cope she wouldn’t be there. I think everyone needs to consider whether their support for Ellie is just that or whether they are “othering/patronising” her in the terms they are using. I’m not singling any one user out but I noticed a bit of it last night and it bothered me. My 2p is that I hope that in the longer term Strictly turns out to be a positive experience for her; I think we all want that

Well she was very obviously not coping last night, we all saw that, so not sure her “support network” have got it right.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 28/09/2025 13:31

I think you can’t judge off Week One and it really remains to be seen

Is Luba still part of strictly?

Yes.

Foundress · 28/09/2025 13:53

@treacledan71 I think she is. She was on the balcony at one point in a dark blue dress watching the performances. Unless I have mixed her up with someone else!

Pl242 · 28/09/2025 14:12

Caught up this morning. I enjoyed the performances from Jimmy, Karen, George, Lewis and Alex the most.

Bottom of the scoreboard seems fair.

Thought Vicky was overmarked and judged went easier on her in their comments relative to other contestants.

xsquared · 28/09/2025 14:15

I miss Gorka already. Didn't think I would.

What do the pros who don’t have a partner do? Apart from the pre recorded group dances and the occasional dance accompanied by that weeks singer.

Do they help other dancers out with choreography? Or…are they just contracted for one day a week or something?

EsmaCannonball · 28/09/2025 14:44

The opening pro-judge dance was everything Strictly should be; proper old-skool camp, kitsch Come Dancing. Reminiscent of the Bruno Sings! routine. Wasn't it great that each dance was a recognisable style and only danced by three couples? Normally those routines are so manic and too busy to really see what's going on. Arm-hankies!

Karen! I was a bit bamboozled that they were leaving the non-dancey sporty woman till the end but that was exactly the kind of surprise that Strictly exists for. I've gone from being not bothered to loving her.

Lewis! Hello, young man! If only Katya was as ruthlessly, nakedly ambitious as Aliona and that hair would be gone by week three. I mean, Aliona would put Night Nurse in his Lucozade and go at him with a pair of scissors.

I think they are (mostly) a likeable bunch and it's going to be really sad to lose (most) people. Pleasantly surprised by Jimmy and George. Really liked Harry, Ellie, Stefan, La Voix and Balvinder.

Ellie's secret weapon was the way she really committed to the dance and threw herself into it. Much easier to watch than some of the more careful but nervy and self-conscious performances. I thought the judges were too harsh with their marks (as they were for most people) and I hope it doesn't crush her confidence.

Alexis and Julian seem like good additions. Good to see Amy match fit and Kai unleashed.

I think the producers may have been clever in partnering Aljaz with someone who might temper all his 'Get in!' stuff and maybe restore him to the old Aljaz.

Main take of the night - Ross has a girlfriend? That's Ross's girlfriend?!!!! (Googles Ross) He's been married twice before and those were his wives?!!!!!!!! Jowita's safe. She's too friggin' old and dowdy for him. I think this is what they call a paradigm shift.

xsquared · 28/09/2025 14:15

To me, Gorka is one of the classic pros. Glad he's benched of his own volition.

Foundress · 28/09/2025 14:52

@NoCommentingFromNowOn I honestly have no idea! Good question though. I would have thought they probably rehearse a lot and must get paid for their time doing that as well as the weekly performances.

CaveMum · 28/09/2025 14:53

I wish they’d stick some of the old Come Dancing shows on BBC4 again. It’s great craic to listen to the couple biographies (Kenneth, 24, is a greengrocer from Barnet whose hobbies include Airfix models and ritual sacrifice. Janet, 19, is a trainee hairdresser and part-time life drawing model. She made her dress using her grandmother’s wedding dress from 1918) and sometimes we get to spot Len on the judging panel.

They often do pieces for It Takes Two - sometimes they go to see foreign versions of Strictly so may be away for a few days, but they often also do things like trying out different types of dance and theyve also been know to fill in for Joanne Clifton etc etc. They are also there to step in if a dancer gets ill or injured - like when Amy had to withdraw and Lauren took over dancing with JB. They may also get partners for a) Children In Need or b) the Christmas specials. Don’t forget that from week 2 onwards, the eliminated dancers are in a similar position. So it’s not that unusual.

Those repeats were literally the most entertaining thing I have ever seen in my life. I'm not even using hyperbole there. I wanted to change my name by deed poll to Ada Unsworth. I reckon if they put them on BBC One on primetime Sunday evening they would get an audience of about 60 million.

Coffeeishot · 28/09/2025 15:05

Just moving over don't want to be talking to myself 😀

LittleBitofBread · 28/09/2025 15:05

I thought Chris was OK; quite confident-looking. He won't really last long though.
Alex was very good, and undermarked. I disagree with those saying the song was too fierce for a VW; it's such a simple-looking dance it needs some drama.
Lewis has lots of energy and style, but his kicks were very wild. I thought Shirley's advice was spot on. He seems quite sweet.
George was surprisingly charming and he looks like a natural ballroom dancer.
Balvinder was OK. I think she'll improve a bit, but will plateau fairly early.
Harry was good but they tried a bit hard with the packed-in choreography and theming. Can't really blame Karen though; she must think she's in with a good chance this year.
I have no idea who Ross is, but I thought he was quite endearing, although obviously not a natural cha cha dancer Grin He won't last long.
Thomas: Jury is out for me. Shirley thought he had some good arm shaping, and I'm not going to argue. He was appropriately sweet and complimentary about Amy and her teaching, which I have to give him credit for.
I liked Vicky and I like her partnership with Kai. And Claudia's handshake of appreciation/fellowship when she said she didn't like standing up Grin
Ellie was really good, confident, great rhythm. Those two high kicks were excellent.
Karen was jaw-dropping. What an amazing surprise. She looks fit as a flea, which will take her a long way. I love how she was super-confident on the dance floor, but off it was like a girl whose mum has told her to mind her P's and Q's.
Jimmy was surprisingly good, quite a natural. He's got a real charm about him and his family are absolutely beautiful.
La Voix I enjoyed. I liked how they styled out the technical malfunction. He is a real pro. I just hope the comedy bits with the judges don't get too frequent or too annoying. I do wonder if the producers might gently put their foot down about it; I could imagine it losing them precious seconds every week!
Amber was good, maybe a bit bland, and I agree with Craig she was quite balletic (I would guess she went to stage school, and maybe did ballet as a child) but she deserves a pass for the circumstances. Good to see Nikita getting to compete.
I’m missing Nancy; I like her. I agree with a pp she seems very tough and hardworking, but also funny. Missing Gorka too, and think he might have been a nice partner for Ellie; Vito might be a bit tall for her in the ballroom.
Who have I missed?

I disagree with some posters about the singing; I thought it was good. I think it's generally good. The range of styles/keys they cover, and the way they arrange them all for specific dances, is quite amazing when you think about it. I used to know a musician who knows some of the Strictly band, and he said they don't even need to write down the music; when they get told which song or piece they can just immediately tell you how they’ll arrange it, what key and tempo, how they need to cut it to fit the minute-and-a-half etc. It's hugely impressive and I think they’re a bit underappreciated.

V long post; sorry!

I can remember watching come dancing as a girl i was probably 5/6 with my gran we loved it, the women were so tanned i am assuming it was real i can't see there being spray tan in the 70s.

Agree @LittleBitofBread and they’re doing so many songs each week.

My only complaint about the band is that we don’t get to see the fit as fuck wonderfully talented Dave Arch at all. I seem to have a vague memory of Claudia talking to him on one show??? Phwoarrrr.

No, they just introduce them. I know what you mean about Claudia talking to Dave now that you say it. Maybe it was on the results show rather than the main show?

Silverbirchleaf · 28/09/2025 15:23

I hope they don’t have too many gimmicks (ie props) this series. I’ve said it before, they need a classical episode, all dj’s and frothy ball gowns.

ilovesooty · 28/09/2025 15:24

George is favourite to win now.

I see Thomas is whining to the media again today.

LaMarschallin · 28/09/2025 15:27

CaveMum
She made her dress using her grandmother’s wedding dress from 1918

And it inevitably had 90 zillion sequins that she sewed on all by herself...

Oh it might have been, yes. I’m very hit and miss with that show, if it’s on I might watch it, but I don’t keep tabs on it.

LittleBitofBread · 28/09/2025 15:30

By the way, I missed the stuff about there not being a head judge. When did they say that? And how's it going to work if they have a tie in the dance-off and need a casting vote?
