In a long awaited return to British television, ITV (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/tv-reviews/a64348705/gemma-arterton-secret-service-itv-drama/) have scored award-winning actor Andrew Lincoln to lead in upcoming thriller, Coldwater.

Alongside Ewen Bremner, Indira Varma (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/a64475507/the-night-manager-season-2-release-date-cast-plot/)and Eve Myles, the six-part series is written by celebrated playwright David Ireland and, if recently-released first look images are anything to go by, is guaranteed to keep you at the edge of your seat.

The series (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/tv-reviews/g31986791/best-tv-shows/) centres around John (Lincoln) and the unfolding of an unlikely relationship when he moves up to the fictional village of Coldwater in rural Scotland.

Exploring themes of masculinity and religion, the thriller blends dark humour with compelling characters.

What is the plot of Coldwater?

After witnessing a fiery confrontation in a local playground, stay-at-home dad John relocates from London as far away as possible up to Coldwater in Scotland.

Amidst his mid-life identity crisis, John befriends his mysterious next door neighbour, Tommy (Ewen Bremner). A friendly face and valued resident in Coldwater.

Tommy is a relic of the community; he is the leader of the all-male book group and married to Rebecca, the local vicar (Eve Myles).

Whilst John is totally enthralled by Tommy, his wife Fiona (Indira Varma) is completely unsettled by him.

As Fiona strives to add some spark back into her marriage and her career, she is wary of John and Tommy’s bond.

Fiona’s suspicions are correct, as underneath his charming exterior, Tommy is the neighbour from hell.

As his mask starts to slip, his shocking secrets come to the surface, and John starts to question Tommy’s motives whilst he grapples with his own personal struggles.

The official synopsis reads: “This is the story of a normal man, in a normal marriage, who finds himself in a far from normal situation. A man who discovers a newfound sense of his own power, right at the moment he falls under the influence of someone incredibly dangerous.”

Who is the Cast and Crew of Coldwater?
• Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead, Love Actually, Teachers) plays John
• Ewen Bremner (Our Flag Means Death, Trainspotting) plays Tommy
• Indira Varma (Obsession, Obi-Wan Kenobi) plays Fiona
• Eve Myles (Hijack, Keeping Faith) plays Rebecca

Well, that took a turn. Definitely not a comedy 😂

Yes think Tommy has more than one death under his belt. Keeping trophies. Wonder if the bible group were all like John and Tommy has trapped them?

Tommy will tell John he moved the body and burnt Angus's home down to protect John.

To be fair to John, it was self defence as Angus was strangling him.

Yes self defence and now he's pulled into this thing he can't get out of 🙈

I can't remember what exactly but John made reference to something she had done. I wonder if she's cheated in the past and he's struggling to keep the marriage going and it's why he won't have sex with her?

Agree. The only reason she puts up with John must be because she's done something pretty awful in the past. She even alluded to it.

FurForksSake · 15/09/2025 00:25

Spud meets egg in fabulous 90s food based casting 😆

I asked DH how he’d have reacted and if he felt pressure to not be a bystander, he then reminded me of his karate hobby (he’s about to take his black belt) and that he’d placate before he’d do anything else but he would definitely step in. It was interesting to consider how some men feel in these situations, but he’s definitely a magnet for it!

The husband definitely is a serial killer with all the trophies, so we think killed the sex worker? Eve Myles was brilliant as ever, I did wonder if she was going to make a pass at the mum in the hot tub.

Perhaps I'm way off, but I don't think the park incident caused John's PTSD, because to me he seemed quite anxious just because the woman approached him and tried making conversation, before the assault even happened.

He rejected a phone call from Fiona, I think, in the park flashback and blames her for what happened so I reckon he already had PTSD, possibly caused by something she did, and he's blaming her for his triggered/running response to it? 🤷‍♀️

FurForksSake · 15/09/2025 00:52

He was also looking at houses, so assume the move was planned? He was definitely haunted by something already.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/09/2025 01:09

@FurForksSake I def think he killed her years ago - think I said that around 930 so middle of e1

Agree. I don't think the playground incident was solely why they moved. John was already anxious and stressed before. His wife even alluded to him always attracting trouble in London so something else has definitely happened to make him be such a quivering wreck of a man.

the80sweregreat · 15/09/2025 06:39

The acting was off at times and it also gave me Royston vasey vibes in that village

purpleme12 · 15/09/2025 06:45

I do think something else has happened in John's past to make him like he is yes

Gloriia · 15/09/2025 07:22

'Perhaps I'm way off, but I don't think the park incident caused John's PTSD, because to me he seemed quite anxious just because the woman approached him and tried making conversation, before the assault even happened.'

Yes definitely something else happened before the park attack.

Was all a bit weird wasn't it. Unlikeable characters, the praying, the awful houses with awful decor. It kind of had me horrified well before the attack in the woods. Very bizarre but I might stick with to see what on earth is going on.

'Spud meets egg in fabulous 90s food based casting'

Hasnt Egg aged better than Spud Shock. Spud was almost unrecognisable I had to Google as I thought he looked vaguely familiar bit didn't realise it was actually him.

Clawdy · 15/09/2025 08:11

The woman vicar is so weird, the way she grabbed John and kissed him on the lips as the family came through the front door! Nobody would do that to a new neighbour you'd hardly met!

purpleme12 · 15/09/2025 08:16

Yes so so weird the whole thing!

KillingEvesbestmate · 15/09/2025 08:28

The whole thing is so so weird but so good. I won't say anything else as I'm up to ep 4 and I don't want to incur the wrath of @Blondeshavemorefun ! But Eve Myles is as ever brilliant.

MonkeyTennis34 · 15/09/2025 08:31

Great show! Andrew Lincoln is still gorgeous (to me!) and I love Indira Varma and Eve Myles.
Ha! I knew it wasn’t Spud!

honeylulu · 15/09/2025 09:00

I was really disappointed by the weirdness. It was too silly to be a thriller and not funny enough to be a comedy. I watched with husband who was unimpressed and I doubt we'll watch any more together but I may well catch up out of idle curiosity.

I agree with posters saying that there will be a back story before the London event. He was really twitchy and seemed to not want to engage with the woman talking to him. I remember saying out loud "I wonder if he's supposed to be in witness protection or something" and that then seemed to match with the running off. I don't think it can be that as the wife was a well known chef and the Scottish neighbours knew who she was. But there will be something... I hope.

I hope it unravels fairly quickly to build up the main character as at the moment I'm not at all invested in a cowardly cocklodger. It would surely be a huge waste of Andrew Lincoln not to give him more to do than that.

Fayaway · 15/09/2025 09:01

I can’t get past a nine-year-old singing Wheels on the Bus so enthusiastically in the car! Also that they could move in two months, albeit John was already looking.

Absolutely don’t want the wrath of me 😂😂

I also thought it was slightly weird that a girl that age was singing that song! 😂

IPartridge · 15/09/2025 09:40

His behaviour in playground was of someone not used to being in the real world. I thought maybe he'd been in prison or a mental health hospital.

FurForksSake · 15/09/2025 09:41

Yes, that nursery time singing really did not track. They should have made it Sabrina Carpenter or k pop demon hunters 😆

Quite at odds with the wife, having quit the restaurant, writing a book about it - resentment due to her vanity and/or fear of being more exposed? He did say “your cookery book” and she corrected him.

the80sweregreat · 15/09/2025 09:51

Did Tommy kill Furgus then ? I got distracted a bit towards the end of episode one
why didn’t he try and save him ?

PrincessScarlett · 15/09/2025 09:54

@the80sweregreat yes Tommy killed Angus then put his body back in his home and set it on fire.

He didn't save him as presumably he's some sort of serial killer and wants to have a hold over John. John thinks he killed Angus.

the80sweregreat · 15/09/2025 09:59

Why did he say to his wife ‘ the playground issue was your fault’ when she wasn’t even there.
