In a long awaited return to British television, ITV (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/tv-reviews/a64348705/gemma-arterton-secret-service-itv-drama/) have scored award-winning actor Andrew Lincoln to lead in upcoming thriller, Coldwater.

Alongside Ewen Bremner, Indira Varma (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/a64475507/the-night-manager-season-2-release-date-cast-plot/)and Eve Myles, the six-part series is written by celebrated playwright David Ireland and, if recently-released first look images are anything to go by, is guaranteed to keep you at the edge of your seat.

The series (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/tv-reviews/g31986791/best-tv-shows/) centres around John (Lincoln) and the unfolding of an unlikely relationship when he moves up to the fictional village of Coldwater in rural Scotland.

Exploring themes of masculinity and religion, the thriller blends dark humour with compelling characters.

What is the plot of Coldwater?

After witnessing a fiery confrontation in a local playground, stay-at-home dad John relocates from London as far away as possible up to Coldwater in Scotland.

Amidst his mid-life identity crisis, John befriends his mysterious next door neighbour, Tommy (Ewen Bremner). A friendly face and valued resident in Coldwater.

Tommy is a relic of the community; he is the leader of the all-male book group and married to Rebecca, the local vicar (Eve Myles).

Whilst John is totally enthralled by Tommy, his wife Fiona (Indira Varma) is completely unsettled by him.

As Fiona strives to add some spark back into her marriage and her career, she is wary of John and Tommy’s bond.

Fiona’s suspicions are correct, as underneath his charming exterior, Tommy is the neighbour from hell.

As his mask starts to slip, his shocking secrets come to the surface, and John starts to question Tommy’s motives whilst he grapples with his own personal struggles.

The official synopsis reads: “This is the story of a normal man, in a normal marriage, who finds himself in a far from normal situation. A man who discovers a newfound sense of his own power, right at the moment he falls under the influence of someone incredibly dangerous.”

Who is the Cast and Crew of Coldwater?
• Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead, Love Actually, Teachers) plays John
• Ewen Bremner (Our Flag Means Death, Trainspotting) plays Tommy
• Indira Varma (Obsession, Obi-Wan Kenobi) plays Fiona
• Eve Myles (Hijack, Keeping Faith) plays Rebecca

I thought it was great too, and EM and EB were terrific. I thought it looked certainly set up for a S2, which I don't think I'm delighted about. But not unexpected these days.

Yes John hates Tommy BUT Tommy was right that John is a better man now because of Tommy. In the beginning he was a pathetic excuse for a man watching a woman be assaulted before running away. Now he's fighting for his life and his family and he's got his balls back. He might hate Tommy but he owes him everything.

Rebecca really is the true psychopath isn't she. Controlled Tommy and his killings for years, was no doubt responsible for Susie's death because she viewed her as a whore so it is fine to kill a whore (Tommy warned Katrina not to become a whore as he knew he would have to kill her). Then playing the victim and now controls the whole community through the church. Even John and Fiona have fallen for her lies. Cameron is a Tommy in the making after he tried to strangle MJ.

All in all I absolutely loved this. I was a bit dubious after episode one but the 4 main actors were outstanding, particularly Ewen Bremner and Eve Myles. Not sure it has been set up for series 2 as I think it has been tied up nicely and I think they would miss Tommy's character too much.

Agree with all of this but there were hints of something else in the future. The lingering look at the ring in the toy basket that Rebecca planted, the fact that MJ seemed to realise that Susie was her mother (and indeed that she was the trophy), Cameron with a potential to take off where his Dad left off. Will have to see. All in all it was brilliant casting and acting and utterly chilling.

Tommy warned Katrina not to become a whore as he knew he would have to kill her

He already tried to strangle her but John stopped him.

Excellent acting all round, very enjoyable .

the80sweregreat · 30/09/2025 18:17

I enjoyed it , but it had a bad ending ! Set up for another series maybe ?

vincettenoir · 02/10/2025 21:45

I LOVED the tone of this. So jarring and tense. Acting was great too. Why do pp think MJ is Suzie’s daughter?

Because MJ was adopted by Tommy and Rebecca. Susie was murdered. Rebecca said it was ok for whores to be murdered. MJ looked as if she saw a reflection of herself when she looked at Suzie’s pictures. I think MJ was the trophy.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/10/2025 09:03

Wow that is very deep. I went completely over my head.

So how likely is it that a girl would be adopted by the village Priest if her mum had been murdered but it’s definitely an interesting theory?

As much as I loved this I don’t know how you could spin another series out of the loose ends, and I wouldn’t be that keen to find out. I would have preferred a neater ending.

Got away with it because she was the village priest. I mean she was Satan really so anything is possible!

I didn’t know that the daughter was the missing woman’s daughter ! I didn’t clock that

We don’t either, it was the fact MJ was adopted, that the murdered Suzie was considered a “whore” and Tommy was only allowed to murder
those. The fact that MJ showed signs of recognition of Susie’s picture. We may never know!

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/10/2025 18:42

glad wasn’t Just me that didn’t reliese it @the80sweregreat and @TheFormidableMrsC
