In a long awaited return to British television, ITV (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/tv-reviews/a64348705/gemma-arterton-secret-service-itv-drama/) have scored award-winning actor Andrew Lincoln to lead in upcoming thriller, Coldwater.

Alongside Ewen Bremner, Indira Varma (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/a64475507/the-night-manager-season-2-release-date-cast-plot/)and Eve Myles, the six-part series is written by celebrated playwright David Ireland and, if recently-released first look images are anything to go by, is guaranteed to keep you at the edge of your seat.

The series (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/tv-reviews/g31986791/best-tv-shows/) centres around John (Lincoln) and the unfolding of an unlikely relationship when he moves up to the fictional village of Coldwater in rural Scotland.

Exploring themes of masculinity and religion, the thriller blends dark humour with compelling characters.

What is the plot of Coldwater?

After witnessing a fiery confrontation in a local playground, stay-at-home dad John relocates from London as far away as possible up to Coldwater in Scotland.

Amidst his mid-life identity crisis, John befriends his mysterious next door neighbour, Tommy (Ewen Bremner). A friendly face and valued resident in Coldwater.

Tommy is a relic of the community; he is the leader of the all-male book group and married to Rebecca, the local vicar (Eve Myles).

Whilst John is totally enthralled by Tommy, his wife Fiona (Indira Varma) is completely unsettled by him.

As Fiona strives to add some spark back into her marriage and her career, she is wary of John and Tommy’s bond.

Fiona’s suspicions are correct, as underneath his charming exterior, Tommy is the neighbour from hell.

As his mask starts to slip, his shocking secrets come to the surface, and John starts to question Tommy’s motives whilst he grapples with his own personal struggles.

The official synopsis reads: “This is the story of a normal man, in a normal marriage, who finds himself in a far from normal situation. A man who discovers a newfound sense of his own power, right at the moment he falls under the influence of someone incredibly dangerous.”

Who is the Cast and Crew of Coldwater?
• Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead, Love Actually, Teachers) plays John
• Ewen Bremner (Our Flag Means Death, Trainspotting) plays Tommy
• Indira Varma (Obsession, Obi-Wan Kenobi) plays Fiona
• Eve Myles (Hijack, Keeping Faith) plays Rebecca

Princess , thank you

I am thinking the woman in the shop must be more significant as she's a fairly well known actor.

Did Tommy kill Furgus then ? I got distracted a bit towards the end of episode one
why didn’t he try and save him ?

He wants to have a hold over the other bloke who thinks he killed him.

Yes, we said that too, early episodes are always is that a supporting artist or an actor. She was potentially the person the neighbour’s son was on the phone to? The vicar lady waxed lyrical about her supporting herself with two jobs, so she’s definitely popping back up!

Why did he say to his wife ‘ the playground issue was your fault’ when she wasn’t even there.

I assumed that was no more than, "You're always busy so I'm stuck with the kids again". But then again, he is the house-husband by common consent, it seems, so that's should be normal. At the beginning, in that playground scene, I thought perhaps John was in witness protection (didn't we have one like that recently? They all blend into one after a while 😀), or something like that. Didn't want police involvement.

FurForksSake · 15/09/2025 10:40

Oh I also thought it was interesting (and I may have lost concentration), but when he was asked what he did for work he replied “nothing” and then they chatted about him looking after the kids, but I didn’t hear him say what his career had been or what he had done for work. Maybe I missed it? We were discussing biscuits at one point…

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/09/2025 11:04

won’t JOHN work it out? That’s if Angus managed to stag at home that he didn’t kill him.

Or would it be manslaughter instead of murder?

Tommy may say he burnt his home to cover up he’s beaten up body.

The autopsy will surely show he was beaten up even his body was burnt

No idea why this has been classed as partly comedic , it's anything but .

Tommy is creepy , enough to give me nightmares , with his box of trophies .

Actually, don't know why I said Tommy is creepy, none of them are normal !

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/09/2025 14:09

Def not black humour

I don't think they said what he did before

caramac04 · 15/09/2025 14:27

I was looking forward to this but wasn’t massively impressed. I’m torn. If I don’t watch the rest I’ll wonder how it all turned out but if I do watch it I may be wasting my time.

JSMill · 15/09/2025 16:28

It’s really annoying me that they use the term ‘vicar’. It’s a minister in the Church of Scotland. Yes she could be Episcopalian (CofE) but that’s not very common in Scotland, especially in rural areas and villages.

Where’s the black humour

it’s violent - man kicking the shit out of a woman in a playground

John bashing Angus with a rock

Tommy kicking/beating Angus up and then arson

Just watched half of the first episode and gave up.

Ridiculous characters.

CalamityGanon · 15/09/2025 20:51

I know this isn’t the main issue but it really jarred when Andrew Lincoln went downstairs when they heard a strange noise in the night. He’s so scared that he can’t even phone 999 when the woman is attacked but happily wanders downstairs when there may be an intruder and doesn’t bother to put the light on????!!!

I've just started ep1.

Looking back at the blurb it say "whilst John is enthralled by Tommy..."

I don't get anything appealing about the character at all!

I guess he just falls for the kid words? "you're a good man John"

Too far from reality for me I think!
