In a long awaited return to British television, ITV (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/tv-reviews/a64348705/gemma-arterton-secret-service-itv-drama/) have scored award-winning actor Andrew Lincoln to lead in upcoming thriller, Coldwater.

Alongside Ewen Bremner, Indira Varma (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/a64475507/the-night-manager-season-2-release-date-cast-plot/)and Eve Myles, the six-part series is written by celebrated playwright David Ireland and, if recently-released first look images are anything to go by, is guaranteed to keep you at the edge of your seat.

The series (https://www.redonline.co.uk/entertainment/tv-reviews/g31986791/best-tv-shows/) centres around John (Lincoln) and the unfolding of an unlikely relationship when he moves up to the fictional village of Coldwater in rural Scotland.

Exploring themes of masculinity and religion, the thriller blends dark humour with compelling characters.

What is the plot of Coldwater?

After witnessing a fiery confrontation in a local playground, stay-at-home dad John relocates from London as far away as possible up to Coldwater in Scotland.

Amidst his mid-life identity crisis, John befriends his mysterious next door neighbour, Tommy (Ewen Bremner). A friendly face and valued resident in Coldwater.

Tommy is a relic of the community; he is the leader of the all-male book group and married to Rebecca, the local vicar (Eve Myles).

Whilst John is totally enthralled by Tommy, his wife Fiona (Indira Varma) is completely unsettled by him.

As Fiona strives to add some spark back into her marriage and her career, she is wary of John and Tommy’s bond.

Fiona’s suspicions are correct, as underneath his charming exterior, Tommy is the neighbour from hell.

As his mask starts to slip, his shocking secrets come to the surface, and John starts to question Tommy’s motives whilst he grapples with his own personal struggles.

The official synopsis reads: “This is the story of a normal man, in a normal marriage, who finds himself in a far from normal situation. A man who discovers a newfound sense of his own power, right at the moment he falls under the influence of someone incredibly dangerous.”

Who is the Cast and Crew of Coldwater?
• Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead, Love Actually, Teachers) plays John
• Ewen Bremner (Our Flag Means Death, Trainspotting) plays Tommy
• Indira Varma (Obsession, Obi-Wan Kenobi) plays Fiona
• Eve Myles (Hijack, Keeping Faith) plays Rebecca

I found that really disturbing. I’m not sure I’ll continue watching.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/09/2025 22:06

It’s def not a comedy

Donttellempike · 14/09/2025 22:08

Its giving me Royston Vasey vibes , a bit much TBH

PrincessScarlett · 14/09/2025 22:08

Well, that took a turn. Definitely not a comedy 😂

Yes think Tommy has more than one death under his belt. Keeping trophies. Wonder if the bible group were all like John and Tommy has trapped them?

Tommy will tell John he moved the body and burnt Angus's home down to protect John.

To be fair to John, it was self defence as Angus was strangling him.

RosaMoline · 14/09/2025 22:13

Another TV drama full of stupid decisions. I think most people would definitely call the police on the first incident in the park, and even the scene where he was attacked by Angus…self defence surely? He tried to strangle him!

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/09/2025 22:15

It was self defence

Tommy has def killed before and guessing vicar wife doesn’t know his secret

Oh for goodness sake. Why are all these dramas so bad ? Another one I’m not going to bother any further with.

She could be in on it 🤷🏻‍♀️

PrincessScarlett · 14/09/2025 22:24

Rebecca the vicar was very harsh when she spoke about the murdered girl from years ago. Made reference to her being a prostitute and implying that's why she was killed. Plus she doesn't believe in god. Maybe she did and bad stuff happening made her stop believing. Maybe she has been trapped by Tommy or maybe the two of them are like Brady and Hindley. One of the books Tommy had was about Ian Brady.

I just binged The Guest on the iplayer, this blondw woman was the main character in it

Eve Myles

FriendofDorothy · 14/09/2025 22:25

Weird.
That's my summary so far.

moto748e · 14/09/2025 22:26

I quite liked the tone at first, thought they were going for a Coen-esque black comedy vibe. But I've always thought Indira Varma was a terrible actress, so call it confirmation bias if you like, but my mind wasn't changed here. But, tbf, her character doesn't seem to make sense. She's unreasonably patient with John, over sex and much else. Can't help thinking it was more than a moment's cowardice in a playground that made him leave London. And, like so many in TVland, they seem to live in considerable luxury, despite living on fresh air.

PrincessScarlett · 14/09/2025 22:27

Cameron is a bit odd too. Talking about John being a loser when he's only just met him. Maybe Tommy and Rebecca befriend all the losers and waifs and strays and Cameron has seen it all before.

The style reminds me a bit of Shallow Grave.

SabrinaThwaite · 14/09/2025 22:35

Ewen Bremner is great as a proper creepy Bible John.

purpleme12 · 14/09/2025 22:36

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/09/2025 21:37

Donttellempike · 14/09/2025 21:47

She’s very tolerant. He’s a total useless arse thus far . She’d be better off with a nanny

I'm guessing there's some backstory that she's put him through some shit or something as well

I can't remember what exactly but John made reference to something she had done. I wonder if she's cheated in the past and he's struggling to keep the marriage going and it's why he won't have sex with her?
