That’s the choice of the parents though to use before and after school club, it’s not the fault of the school. I do agree that sitting behind desks in a formal setting from year one is not beneficial to many children though. I’m in wales where we have foundation phase and play based learning until year 3- it’s meant to be a ‘stage not age’ ethos. I think it’s better than England's model but with wales always doing rubbish in the pisa scores, i am not sure it will continue

Parents have limited choice if they both want to hang onto their jobs. Hence the 10 hour days.
Very sad.
Poor little kids. I recently spent some time supporting a year 3 class. I saw it all playing out before my eyes. Children simply unable to cope with the demands of the curriculum, either exhausted, shoulders hunched or displaying behaviours such as running out of the room and so on. They are small children, not mini adults.

We had this debate in our house.

I am sure it’s a bleep out of swearing but our teens were convinced her tic was a whistle. Both parties adamant they were right!

I vaguely remember Amy saying she started whistling when she got nervous/anxious which is what made me think her tic was a whistle. May have to watch it back!

Piggywaspushed · 10/09/2025 12:33

She has quite a few tics. She has physical tics, too. Poor girl. It must be exhausting.

But the repeated almost comedy cartoon whistle noise isn't human and was put in for pre watershed editing.

I’m trying to work out what Mr.Burton has done to his hair?!

Receding hairline!

Dyed it black at some point, which looked pretty ropey

Did I imagine it or had they added sound effects to the footage of the little girl with Tourette’s ? If so , unnecessary?

I didn't think they did no

This school seems
very lax/permissive.
So much make up on girls and very obvious false eyelashes. Nail varnish, jewellery, hair extensions. Really poor standards of uniform.

Astonishing that the Head of English had no solutions to offer to the English teacher who sought her advice about the AI essay.
Surely they have an AI policy? When was this filmed?
I work in FE, and I see the outcome from schools like this. So many 16 year olds, after eleven years of compulsory education, come to colleges unable to read or write.
They fail GCSE’s (obviously) and then arrive at college for a vocational course which requires compulsory Maths and English. FE colleges then have to run remedial classes to try and get them
to a functional level, especially in Maths.
Youngsters are being so badly
let down by the school system.

I really don't think that the head of English would have had no solutions to offer. They just decided to not film that bit or decided to stop that scene there in the programme because that's how they wanted to edit it!

I definitely saw some staining on his skin from dye at one point.

How does a kid get to secondary school without being able to read 😭

That poor boy has such self esteem issues it was horrible seeing him cry.

Agreed. He was sounding out words my DC did in Reception (“snail in the rain” is a set 3 phonics sound, and he was doing words like frail) and struggling. No wonder he kept asking to leave regular lessons - he couldn’t possibly engage with the material because he can’t read. Poor kid. How on earth did he get through seven years of primary and still have a reading age of five?

PestoHoliday · 13/09/2025 10:10

@metellaestinatrio It was just heartbreaking.

Of course he's full of brio and frustration when he can't follow the slightest thing that's happening in lessons. He is desperate to cover his humiliation. God knows young kids have a lot of pride.

What future is there if he can't read or add? As his peers move forward he gets further and further behind.

What on earth were his primary school doing? This was reception level sounding out, the poor kid. Mainstream provision isn't helping him.

GiveTheGoblinsSnacks · 13/09/2025 10:14

I don’t remember parents being such a big role in previous series.

metellaestinatrio · 13/09/2025 10:18

@PestoHoliday exactly. Even my Y3 DC is learning subordinate clauses and fronted adverbials and you can’t do those if you haven’t learnt to read. This poor boy must have been unable to understand much of went on in class for his whole time in KS2 and as you say he is just going to get more and more behind.

It is admirable but depressing that the school has brought in a primary teacher to help him but surely he needs to be spending all academic lesson time catching up on the basics rather than learning French and History and then joining his class for PE and other practical subjects so he integrates and makes friends.

JordanaBevan · 13/09/2025 12:58

Mr Burton had a hair transplant- he has been quite open about it (locally, I have 2 kids at Thornhill Academy).

That's because parents where not so involved in their kids lives years ago kids where a lot more independent. Now parents are always hovering and jumping in over every little thing.

A 14 year old I was working with, looked at a wall display and said something along the lines of " those lines must be words I suppose"

True.

Watching

Hepzibar · 14/09/2025 20:37

loved it last time. Something not sitting right with me this time.
Seems like The Mr Burton Show too

Meredusoleil · 14/09/2025 20:37

Does this boy not have additional needs? Mr Burton seems quite harsh towards him.

Dancinginthemoonlightbulb · 14/09/2025 20:41

It’s interesting to me how the students are so open with the year managers / teachers. I would have died with embarrassment discussing fall outs and personal issues with my teachers. I went to a comp but it felt like there was more of a formal relationship between staff and students.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/09/2025 20:41

I agree with the PP who mentioned the lax uniform standards. Nail polish and multiple piercings. Would never have been allowed in my school.

Lalgarh · 14/09/2025 20:55

Mr Chippendale the science teacher seems a bit of a knob in that clip wanging on about "sunburn means you get CANCER" . Not surprised that girl was upset.

Still. 5 out of 56.

purpleme12 · 14/09/2025 21:32

At the open evening last year when we were deciding high schools and we asked about if earrings allowed and they said yes. We thought great. And now they've brought this new rule in that they're not allowed earrings and since she's started high school one ear's healed up

So annoying 😠
