OP posts:

Riley seems to get an awful lot of attention.

You mean focus on him in the show? If I remember there would always be a child / children focused on in each episode. Next week he will probably be a bit player and they will highlight someone else .

On the show or from the teachers?

MulberryMoon · 04/09/2025 00:04

I like the accent. I wonder if any of these teachers are still there. I know the Head has moved on.

I've been watching season 1 and I think a bit of neurodivergence screening would have been useful for Robbie-Joe and Tom in episode 3. I say this as a mum with 2 ADHD dx children and it's just screaming out to me that Robbie-Joe, in particular, isn't meaning to be naughty he's just hyperactive with low impulse control, time blindness etc etc. I'm thinking things have changed a lot awareness wise in the last 12 years alone.

Mr steer on the right works in a different school im sure the blonde lady 2nd from left was in a clip for future episodes not sure about the other lady maybe retired im sure they said it had been 12 years

Marbledhall · 04/09/2025 20:47

Just watching this. A couple of reflections.
Riley is more disruptive than everyone else so his ‘neurodiversity screening’ is prioritised. I’d say Amy would benefit equally for asd assessment but she’ll probably fly under the radar because she’s female and doesn’t shout and kick things. This is so typical of the school environment it enrages me.
The school food looks utterly shit, no surprise. For all Jamie Oliver’s interventions, after primary school most teenagers are straight to a school diet of beige food and radnor fizz. Depressing.

I didn't realise they were checking kids for sweets and fizzy drinks at school like it was contraband

Lalgarh · 04/09/2025 23:00

Hang on the kid Riley in year 8 has coffee in the morning? I was brought up thinking of that as an "adult" drink that's make my hyper so I only really had that from late teens

Same and i would never dream of letting my kids have coffee or energy drinks. Kids don't need extra energy they have plenty

Pricelessadvice · 05/09/2025 06:58

Coffee actually makes some people calmer (it makes me sleepy!). Apparently there’s a link to this and ADHD. It’s got something to do with the receptors that bind to caffeine.
I can drink coffee to calm down or sleep. It doesn’t have the normal effect on me.

I still don’t think kids should have it, but I wonder if the kid gets the same effect from coffee as I do?

sandgrown · 05/09/2025 07:06

ADHD medication is a stimulant similar to amphetamines. That’s why they are controlled drugs . Coffee is supposed to help focus . The teacher questionnaire is only one part of an ADHD assessment .

The evidence for any benefit in children with ADHD is not as good as for adults, plus there are more risks from caffeine in children.

My kids go to another school in the same trust, and yes they do.

Riley, attractive, personable sparky kid. One kid. Thousands of others plain, towing the line. Usually female.

There was another female student getting lots of attention in the episode. And who knows what other attention the kids get, they can only include so many in an episode and lots of children/parents/carers won’t want their children’s problems broadcasted.

Should they have just left him to misbehave because someone on the internet might think it’s unfair as he’s “attractive” (wtf?) and personable?

Lalgarh · 05/09/2025 11:32

There was a little disclaimer in the credits like "the children and adults were provided the appropriate support during and after filming".

Which I assume is some sort of counsellor.

Id like to know if they'd do a follow-up on the original class from 10 years ago of Educating Yorkshire. The lad with the stutter is now a motivational speaker and it'd be like a longitudinal study or 7 / 14/ 21 up series

Why would you let a child drink coffee especially a child you suspect has adhd.

My ADHD son finds coffee makes him sleepy. Caffeine can work differently for people with ADHD.

People let children drink Coke all the time, and those food awful energy drinks are very popular with teenagers.

cumbriaisbest · 05/09/2025 11:48

no need for wtf re Riley being attractive. He is a sparky and compelling young person. Good Luck to him
There are thousands of less attractive and compelling young people going about their business, trying to learn but that doesn't make good TV does it.

All the educating episodes I can remember focus on a couple of different students each time. If you’re looking for a more generic school documentary focused on a wide range of students without issues who are just going about their business I don’t think you’re going to get that from educating Yorkshire!

Lalgarh · 05/09/2025 13:50

There is a memoir being serialised on R4 this week about a guy who went to a school in Acton about 20 years ago following up on the classmates and well the not so inspiring case studies in his school

But why are parents buying kids coke, energy drinks and letting them drink coffee the effect caffeine has on children is very different to adults adhd or not. Coffee wasn't calming him down

i don’t know how his mum could sit there with a straight face as he rhymed off his breakfast Grin

Donttellempike · 05/09/2025 20:06

I find it extraordinary that parents are happy to allow their children to be on this programme.

The children are too young to consent or understand the possible longer term repercussions. Especially for the children with issues. Who are going to feature more as they are “good telly”.

It’s just wrong

I find it strange that local authorities are ok with it too.
