Laurence was the mastermind of the economics of Gilead & how all that would work but there was never a suggestion he set up the handmaids / ceremony / rape etc.

I feel sorry for Lawrence as the unintended consequences of his actions were truly horrendous & nothing any sane person could have foreseen!

Crinkle77 · 16/07/2025 18:22

The ceremony/rape aspect was decided upon in the back of a car but cant remember what season. Waterford was there as was Nick's mentor from before Gilead and a couple of other commanders but can't remember who.

So who came up with that?

I've watched S1-3 in the past week and don't remember seeing it!

Eldermileniummam · 16/07/2025 23:15

Actually maybe vaguely...

dapsnotplimsolls · 17/07/2025 07:48

It wasn't Waterford who was the mentor, it was the guy who was killed in the bombing at the Red Centre, his name escapes me.

Thatsrhesummeroverthen · 17/07/2025 08:01

I'd love to know what was actually in Serena's original book

Yes thats who I meant. Googled it and it was Commander Pryce.

I'm on series 3 of my rewatch. There are so many things I'd forgotten like they Hannah moved away with her new family and the Martha was killed after June went to the school.

Also the one who dobbed her in ended up dead but kept alive on life support so the baby could be born.

It really is dark.

Lawrence's house is good fun though.

I just watched the episode where Fred and Serena turned up and insisted that they carry out the ceremony which was not fun but so interested and in terms of them all partaking in this unwillingly. Then again it's also strange Laurence created that world but expected to avoid all that. I find it strange he helps them escape even early on.

I always remember that well because Lawrence said something to June like "are you sure?", basically highlighting that he was asking her consent.

One thing that really surprised me in the final series was that Moira had never met Nick before! I forgot how soon she escaped.

I love watching the first few episodes and seeing the flashbacks of the changes slowly seeping in. When all the women are let go from their jobs and their bank accounts frozen. It is scary because it doesn't sound too far from what could actually happen.

AFAIK Everything Margaret Atwood had written in The Handmaid’s Tale had happened to women down through the ages.
Is still happening too in certain parts of the world.
And the rights of women are being challenged in some so called Western/First World societies now too.

What happened to Esther? If that's her name? I'm on the episode after the plan takes 52 children to Canada and June was shot and then they all end up on a farm with a really young wife. I recall seeing her later but can't remember properly.

Last seen in S5, pregnant and furious.

OnTheBoardwalk · 17/07/2025 21:32

I was invested in Esther and what she had put up with

Eldermileniummam · 17/07/2025 21:41

Yes it was a good part of the story and her husband got his comeuppance

She was in a coma, wasn’t she? After a suicide attempt that also poisoned Janine.
Hope we see more of her.

I binged all of THT and finally caught up with the end.

the last season def wasn’t my favourite, all the flashbacks from previous episodes ugh.

I never felt any love for Nick, so that wasn’t really an issue or tug at the heart strings for me at all.

I think my take away from THT is the characters are all complex in their own way. I’m not sure June is always likeable. But no one is.

felt very much like they stalled at the “let’s get Hannah” of season 5 and then realised they had to end the series somehow. I kinda thought June was going to end up a martyr. but I forgot - plot armour.
