I am conflicted on June leaving Nicole to save Hannah.

I don't think I agree the attachment to Hannah will be stronger as such time has passed whereas she had Nicole with her now. However they are both her children so she will want both of them to be safe. I get that. However, after so many years of trying and failing to get Hannah back, she must realises it's not a quick job and she'll be back in a few months. She could miss all of Nicole's childhood and she may not even get to see her again and I can't help but think she's a fool to lose that after she's already lost one child.

I think that is the case more so because relatively speaking Hannah is okay and doesn't seem to remember life before Gilead.

When June was day dreaming about being out with the handmaids, was that Stevie Nicks singing?

Yes, it was - Landslide is a Fleetwod Mac song from 1975.

Why did from book

assume you have read testements so know what happens and if they ever get reunited

which I don’t want to know lol

Yes loads I could talk about but it would spoil the Testaments so I won't 🤷
It's years since I read THT book but it was really only S1 of the tv show. Lots of the characters don't exist in the book

Serena will be organising mother and baby groups in the refugee camp and demanding organic food and lecturing people about breast feeding and weaning.

Give it a few months and she will be on top again.

Thanks, I didn’t recognise the song but I thought it was Stevie Nicks singing.

This is what I’ve been waiting to post.

I think it could have been a good twist

I always thought a change of heart of serena and forgiveness was ridiculous.

She was a crazy evil bitch. Behaviour like that was just too extreme to have come from nowhere and then disappear just as quickly.

She was a war criminal, and she ought to have had her child taken away, been arrested and tried in the international criminal court.

Thatsrhesummeroverthen · 07/07/2025 10:09

Taking her baby away wouldn't have been best for the baby though. She did good things as well as bad - Nick did bad things as well as good - some people in Gilead just did bad throughout!

Olivesforteatonighty · 07/07/2025 10:16

It was for June’s benefit that she forgave Serena. It would have made June feel like the better person.

A baby being brought up by a homicidal maniac who sanctioned the rape of women is hardly in his best interests either.

I have a feeling if Serena got pregnant whilst in Gilead, she would never have tricked Fred into leaving to get Nicole.

She would have happily stayed a wife with her own natural son and high status and everything that went with it. She hasn't changed.

bobbinrobinbobbin · 07/07/2025 11:03

@MightyGoldBear I also question whether it’s fair to try to take Hannah back at this stage. Would she even remember June? It would be incredibly traumatic for her to go through all that again.

Janine’s daughter (Charlotte?) is much younger but it’s pretty unrealistic that she didn’t cry or even look back at Naomi after she was handed over, just giggled and gazed lovingly at Janine.

Agree re June’s hero complex. At least they sort of addressed that in the episode where Moira and Luke lose their shit with her.

bobbinrobinbobbin · 07/07/2025 11:06

@deeahgwitch I missed the relevance of the chair, desk and bed too but I’m guessing it’s what Serena said to June when showing her her room in S1 E1?

EmpressaurusKitty · 07/07/2025 11:11

When June was speaking into the dictaphone at the end she was quoting the first words of the THT book. “A chair, a table, a lamp…”

Hannah's future in gilead looks extremely bleak. Marriage at age 13 to an adult man, and sent to colonies or for ritual rape if she transgressed in anyway. It's not about her attachments to her new parents, it's about protecting her from a misogynistic totalitarian regime. Even if June never saw Hannah again she would still fight to get her out.

Oh, I thought her position was very privileged and that she would be exempt from all that for some reason. The gap between seasons was so long I’ve forgotten a lot.

gingercat02 · 07/07/2025 07:17

Forgot about Serena. Glad she didn't get a happy ever after!

She's been given hope, however, with Tuello's "I'll find you!"

June was told that hannah was wearing purple because she was shortly to be ready for marriage. Gilead marry girls as soon as they are sexually mature. And look at Esther and Nick's first wife - first sign of disobedience and they are murdered or sent to be handmaids to be raped or have their babies removed. Serena had her finger cut off for reading the bible. There is no good future for girls in gilead.

Olivesforteatonighty · 07/07/2025 12:16

Oh God yes, thrown into a swimming pool with weights attached. That was horrific.

Isitsticky · 07/07/2025 12:17

I was happy with that. June's monologue in her old room was from episode 1. And it echoes the opening of chapter 2 (I think?) of the book. I was willing her to look in the cupboard for the graffiti though..

gingercat02 · 07/07/2025 12:23

Me too@Isitsticky but I assumed it had gone in the fire (or they forgot 😅)

What was the deal with Serena. She wasnt stateless she remained a US citizen. Why couldn't she leave the US on her US citizenship eventually once she had documents.

I expect that her US citizenship was revoked while the Waterfords were setting up Gilead.

We are led to believe hannah does remember to some extent (writing her name). We see in season 5 I think a little boy Asher around 6 maybe who is really struggling. Misses his gilead parents. So I think the last episode was perhaps a bit too neat with janine and Charlotte reunion. In reality ofcourse angela/Charlotte would be confused and scared.

I guess we We don't know if commander Lawrence had spoken to her often about janine or if naomi had spent a lot of time preparing her. I think its all just trauma either way and there is no fair way. Its gilead after all.

I think towards the end of the last episode we see June is just fighting for a better world not just for hannah but so hannah doesn't have to like Tuello says about his son. Who knows how much hannah knows of june. Maybe at plum school she hasn't been so shielded as she was at home with the mckenzies. I've not read the testaments yet so who knows what the series will be like and if they will reference or flashback. It would be nice to get more of hannahs side and nods to her being her mothers daughter.

Its certainly so far away from the reunion I had hoped they would have back in season one when you first see them all separated from eachother. Even when she visits her at the lake house in series 2 I think would of allowed for a more straightforward rescue. Its been so many years june couldn't ever just swoop in and rescue hannah she has to bring down all of gilead so hannah has her own freedom and choice to make if she finds June herself. Have to just imagine that season 🥹

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/07/2025 13:11

So if there is no more gilead and commanders

why is hannah still a prisoner as such

is there is not an issue with fertility any more why are they training /keeping teens to marry/be raped

and why is there a follow up TT where hannah is still apparently is

Gilead isn't gone Blondes, it's only Boston they have freed.

Gilead and the commanders still exist, I think? It's just that Gilead is now losing territory piece by piece - unless I've misunderstood.
