Can anyone enlighten me who the character in blue was (with back to camera) that June faced towards the end of the final episode please ?

I thought that was meant to be Hannah? Symbolising her dream that one day they'll be reunited, or something. Mummies always come back.

bunnibee · 09/07/2025 10:22

Can someone please explain the scene when June and Emily were strolling along and having a chat when we saw 2 people hanging? Where they in Gilead? if so, why were they freely able to walk about?

If they were not in Gilead, why were those people hung there?

They were in Boston which was formerly Gilead but freed in the last episofe

I thought they were guardians hanging

I'm not working today so I'm watching episode one of THT

Eldermileniummam · 09/07/2025 10:38

The part where Hannah was snatched away hit today. I'd forgotten that there was a gunshot before they were caught and June thought Luke had been shot.

The opening with that part and the introduction to Aunt Lydia were very dark

Yes, either June or Emily said they were Guardians.

Eldermileniummam · 09/07/2025 12:36

I'm watching S1 Ep 2 when Janine was having her baby
Id forgotten the wives feigned childbirth while the handmaids gave birth
thetr was no mess up to Janine having a baby though. I don't remember her being pregnant

Thanks , that makes perfect sense .

I'm wondering if tuello making a point of calling himself commander and the US hanging the guardians in Gilead style is a subtle nod to the real life US becoming more like Gilead every day.

Isitsticky · 09/07/2025 21:42

I like your thinking, WhyDoes.

Felt like there was more than a subtle nod to this, though further detail already lost to the mists of my memory!

TeenToTwenties · 10/07/2025 08:09

Was it the US hanging the guardians, or was it lynch mobs?

I assumed the latter.

Theredjellybean · 11/07/2025 10:46

It gave me a cold shiver when Tuello said " commander"...felt very much the script writers wanted to portray the idea that men given power will always revert to type...
For anyone who has read Femlandia by Christina dalcher ..the end set years after a feminist only society let's men back in, has the men firmly back in charge ...if you liked THMT you'd like this book.

I also thought the last half of this series was weak
..after years of sitting in Canada not appearing to be able to do anything...the USA military and Luke and mayday have huge resources and can barrell into Gilead and take it down...just like that !
Why haven't they done it before?
Plus Luke seemed completely unconcerned about Hannah...and where was June's anger about this ? I'd be fricking furious with him...like you don't go off to play super hero macho saviour instead of staying with Tuello and me to get our daughter back, when I've spent years in this hellhole so I could try to get to Hannah....he literally seemed somewhat vacant when she mentioned Hannah to him..

I'm late to this thread. Was travelling during the week so only got to watch the finale now. Hated it. Thought it was frankly rather boring. I kept finding myself checking how much time was left which really shouldn't be the case in the finale of a long-running series. The dialogue was trite, the background muzak twee and I felt all the characters were different. And way too many flashbacks used as padding, which has been the case in earlier episodes too. Someone warned that we would be disappointed and that is definitely the case for me.

I notice that this and other episodes were directed by Elisabeth Moss. She's obviously a great actress but I'm not sure the same could be said for her as a director.

I'm just watching episode one of series one again. I strangely prefer seeing traditional Gilead. One thing that's often confused me is that Waterford wasn't June's first posting. But we never see or hear anything about her previous postings.

I started the series again and I'm on season 2 now but I also noticed this. Maybe she wasn't at the first posting very long. Working backwards, she went back to the Waterford house and that's where she starts telling the story, but it is odd there was never ever any mention or reference to the first commander and wife.

I've also been listening to EOD for these earlier episodes.

For those who don’t have Disney+, The Veil with Elisabeth Moss will be on Channel 4 from 20th July

I mentioned the Veil above too

I've watched a couple of episodes

ILoveBrum · 14/07/2025 22:42

Finally got round to watching it - I loved it although wish they’d gotten Hannah! Want to re-read the book & watch the series again from the very start!

I started my rewatch on Monday. I had originally thought the same, but now I wonder if it's June blocking out the first posting; it will have been so traumatic to have all of those experiences leading up to and including being ritually raped every month, not knowing where Hannah / Moira / her mother are, assuming Luke is dead. At the Waterford's she gets that inner strength back. Possibly because of Nick, but also her friendship with Emily. And maybe even meeting Rita, who doesn't talk like a true believer and has the witty comments you don't always hear in Gilead. That's just what I think anyway!

EBearhug · 16/07/2025 00:28

Also at the Waterfords, doesn't she get to play Scrabble with Fred, and to eat a chocolate? It must remind her there are things beyond handmaid-life, a life worth fighting for.

Eldermileniummam · 16/07/2025 09:33

I'm on series 3 of my rewatch. There are so many things I'd forgotten like they Hannah moved away with her new family and the Martha was killed after June went to the school.

Also the one who dobbed her in ended up dead but kept alive on life support so the baby could be born.

It really is dark.

Lawrence's house is good fun though.

I just watched the episode where Fred and Serena turned up and insisted that they carry out the ceremony which was not fun but so interested and in terms of them all partaking in this unwillingly. Then again it's also strange Laurence created that world but expected to avoid all that. I find it strange he helps them escape even early on.

Abra1t · 16/07/2025 11:32

The list of people who have died because of June is quite lengthy.
