Isn’t he basically President now? 😆

Horrace · 08/07/2025 09:15

I didn't think he was military but more government official

He & Ava were both CIA weren’t they?

Tillow4ever · 08/07/2025 10:12

Finally got to watch it last night. I enjoyed it, although my husband didn’t (but then he also didn’t recognise Emily, or the Waterford’s house , or remember any of the stuff that linked back to the beginning so I guess if you don’t remember that, it’s less impactful).

I’m pleased they didn’t wrap it all up in a nice little bow, because realistically, that’s not how something as huge as Gilead would or could end.

What I liked:

All of the season 1 references

Seeing Emily back and learning what she had been doing

June being able to forgive Serena which will help June to be able to move on.

June & Luke realising that everything’s changed and that their relationship isn’t what it was and never can be again. Accepting they needed to move on and see if down the line their paths reconvene when they finally get Hannah back.

That Janine got her rescue and her daughter back

June’s comment about Lydia having “nine fucking lives” when she heard she had somehow survived again - saying what we were all thinking! Also ironic coming from her….

What I didn’t like/had questions on/didn’t really work:

Naomi. I thought to start with she was turning herself over to the US and maybe part of the agreement was she gave Charlotte back to Janine - but then she turned back round to go to Gilead? If they’d spent the season building up to it, showing her feeling guilty or something I would have found it more believable. That said, the season did show us that she seemed to find motherhood challenging.

Not seeing what Moira was doing next.

Would have been nice to find out what happened to Esther, but from what I understand there was a clash of availability that made it impossible. I know the actress had said she wanted to come back.

I’d have liked to have seen Rose’s reaction to the news about her father and husband. In fact actually seeing any sort of Gilead reaction to the bombing and taking of Boston!

Why was a refugee camp telling Serena they weren’t really allowed children there? That makes absolutely no sense!

Where was the refugee centre located?

I’m on the fence about Hannah. I completely get why they didn’t have them reunite. But at the same time it would have been nice to see something about her that tells us either she remembers June, remembers who she is, or that she’s trying to make her own escape plan or even just showing us where she actually was! The whole season has had a disappointing lack of Hannah.

Last episode was a complete anti-climax for me.

Was June wearing a blue/green coat when she visited the old house at the end a sign that she now had power? The wives used to wear that blue/green colour at the beginning, in comparison to the red of the handmaids.

I wondered that too. It would be the last colour I'd want to wear.

Eldermileniummam · 08/07/2025 10:56

Has anyone else watched The Veil starring Elizabeth Moss? It was mentioned on EOD so I've looked it up. I should go see if there's a thread on it already.

Thatsrhesummeroverthen · 08/07/2025 11:00

Presumably they had access to clothes left behind by the fleeing commanders' wives - they won't have had the full range of colours available unless pre Gilead stuff was kept somewhere!

I haven’t but I’ve seen the trailer and Channel 4 says it’s coming soon and it looks pretty good

Pemba · 08/07/2025 11:50

'The Veil' is also streaming on Disney +.

EBearhug · 08/07/2025 18:49

She called him Captain, and he corrected her to Commander, so I think we already knew he was military of some sort.

When Ava / Aunt Phoebe said that she was CIA, Tuello said they’d been in training together so presumably he was CIA too.

BIWI · 08/07/2025 19:56

I loved it.

Because I’d already read The Testaments, some time ago now, I knew that certain things couldn’t actually happen/would happen, so the lack of a truly happy ending didn’t come as a surprise.

I really loved the way that June and Luke engaged with each other. There was no schmaltzy hugs or kisses, but just a truthful engagement with each other and a recognition/agreement of the tasks they had ahead of them. Luke has really become cemented in his Mayday role, and June is continuing her search to find Hannah. A much stronger foundation for their relationship going forward, I think. Luke is no long the weak one in the partnership.

I did think it was a satisfying end, given that The Testaments is coming next. And Margaret Attwood wrote The Testaments with full knowledge of what the creators of THT television series were planning/writing.

(I really don’t think she should have won the Booker prize for The Testaments, though - not only was it really not that well written - IMVVHO! - but also it meant that Bernadette Evaristo had to share the prize with her)

Abra1t · 08/07/2025 20:35

Tuello obviously still has feelings for Serena as he said he would find her.

Isitsticky · 08/07/2025 20:41

I agree but really he just fancies her. She's the opposite of everything he stands for.

I've been watching it today

Josh Charles (Wharton) is in it as well as Elizabeth Moss

Headfullofbees · 08/07/2025 21:55

Whoever mentioned about the click 'a bed, a chair...'. being from episode 1, I just went back to watch it and oh boy I'd forgotten how great it used to be with June's comedy internal narrative. Feel like I could watch season 1 again, but getting to the end was purely testament to my personal commitment levels. I'm not a quitter it seems!

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/07/2025 21:59

@Headfullofbees I watched e1 from s1 straight after e10 of s6

I don’t have Disney+ so I shall wait until it comes to Channel 4. I hope you’re enjoying it 🙂

Eldermileniummam · 08/07/2025 22:11

I'm up for a rewatch thread if anyone else is?

Eldermileniummam · 08/07/2025 22:11

It is a lot to rewatch though!

OnTheBoardwalk · 08/07/2025 22:39

@Eldermileniummam it’s not a load of episodes really, especially when binge watching 😀

i read the Testaments ages ago and can’t really remember it. I'm quite tempted by the audio book option recommended by people

Yes I feel like reading both books again! And I'll probably watch THT tv series

OnTheBoardwalk · 08/07/2025 22:50

I did THMT as English A level back in the day. I'd loved reading everything before this but A Little Princess and THMT are the books that have stayed with me

both a little bit different 😀

EmpressaurusKitty · 09/07/2025 05:18

For people who haven’t come across it, I really recommend the Eyes on Gilead podcast - as well as discussing every episode they have interviews with lots of cast & crew members.

deeahgwitch · 09/07/2025 09:25

The Veil didn’t get a good review in The Guardian.

hetty74 · 09/07/2025 09:38

Can anyone enlighten me who the character in blue was (with back to camera) that June faced towards the end of the final episode please ?
