They could never have ended it well as it is so far away from the book. There's loads I would like to talk about but can't as it is spoiler-ish.

Loved Janine got Angela back, so pleased Emily survived.

I think the scene with June and Luke was them agreeing to separate, she was going to look for Hannah, he was going to carry on with Mayday.

I did love the final scene, right back to the beginning.
It was OK.

gingercat02 · 07/07/2025 07:17

Forgot about Serena. Glad she didn't get a happy ever after!

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 07/07/2025 07:26

Thought that episode was absolute rubbish. The lighting was awful too. The whole series feels like its been made because they saw an opportunity but then couldn't be bothered with an actual storyline. The first 7 episodes were slow as hell, then 8 and 9 tried to fit too much in and 10 was completely pointless.

And June has a hero complex. Fancy leaving your child to go and rescue all the other stolen children. She is the most wanted woman but can walk freely into Gilead too.

Yes she found the files in Lawrence’s house and saw Janine’s son had been killed in a car accident. She told Janine he was in California and she was happy that he ‘lives by the beach’.

It was when she was making the plan to rescue children and put them on the plane to Canada. I can’t remember which series that was now!

Edited

I’d forgotten about Janine’s son.

This episode did feel much more like a wrap up but I suppose that was inevitable when all the exciting stuff happened in episode 9. Looking forward to The Testaments though, & there’s a character in the book called Ava so hopefully that’s why they introduced her in THT.

Exactly. Count your blessings, look after your child and live your life. Even her mother conceded defeat.

She's obsessed with it now. Eventually her luck would run out. She had too .any lucky escapes.

It was dreadful and the while series was so dark I could barely see anything on the screen.

I find it strange Tuello's background has never come up before

Yes, when he was offering asylum in Hawaii to Serena I don’t remember him saying , “And of course my wife and son will be only to happy to show you around and introduce you to island life.”

He said "my son lives there with my ex wife" I took that as him telling Serena he was single, but she decided to go it along with Noah. Finally without a man.

Sorry, apparently I posted a spoiler! It wasn’t actually a plot moment, it was an interminable flashback which I think they have shown so many times the pixels must be contacting their agents for repeat fees!

It was the bloody aquarium scene btw. I suggested it might have been the inspiration for all the shark jumping that went on to try to tidy up the ending.

Boston is American now. She can walk around the neighbourhood because it's been liberated. Tuello gave her a pass.

I know a lot of people are disappointed with the ending and as someone who read the testaments I wasn't expecting her to get Hannah back so I'm not - but it seems obvious to me that June would go back for Hannah again, that's who she is. She could have stayed with Nicole a dozen times over but she didn't. It makes sense too - she loves Nicole but she barely got the chance to care for her, whereas she raised Hannah for 4 years. The attachment to Hannah will be much stronger. Her relationship with Nicole is more like an aunt/niece bond and who would leave their child in a totalitarian state to live happily with a niece and raise them instead? I think we would probably all have the same impulse even if we didn't do it.

Many of the questions asked on the thread will be answered in the testaments and they wouldn't do a 2 years later for that reason. We are going to get a 15 years later follow up. (Or maybe not 15, they have made Hannah and Nicole further apart in age in the show I think so not sure when the testaments will be set)

CruCru · 07/07/2025 08:17

I am a bit bemused by Janine being handed over to the US and by Naomi giving Angela / Charlotte up. It’s possible that there was a prisoner swap but I can’t see how that works as the Commanders are all dead and the US hanged the Guardians (I didn’t like that part, some were probably very young like Jayden in series 5).

It made sense for Luke and June to separate. They’ve been more like colleagues for the last two series.

A better ending would have been that they got Hannah back but she was absolutely captured by Gilead and therefore appalled by her real parents. She can’t read or write and has no real skills that can be used outside Gilead.

Margaret Atwood wrote the Testaments once the telly series was already underway. It got her the Booker when, really, it wasn’t all that good a book. I think people thought The Handmaid’s Tale should have won so the Testaments won instead.

In that episode where they showed Hannah & her classmates, she wrote her name in secret. So she does remember something at least.

She wrote it in capitals (a friend whose children go to the American School said that children are first taught to write in capitals and they are taught to write before being taught to read).. I expect that Hannah only knows how to write her name.

That would make sense - but it at least showed that she remembered her original name & it was a small gesture of rebellion.

Also annoyed me how Luke didn’t really acknowledge that June basically killed Nick. I’d have thought that might be kind of a big deal

Yes I thought this too!

Naomi had to marry again after Putnam was executed. Then Lawrence died and she was a single mother again. Maybe they knew it was a bomb in his briefcase once they explored the wreckage. Maybe she was going to be in the shit as they thought she knew. Maybe she thought the kid was safer being in US

Eldermileniummam · 07/07/2025 08:33

He told June it was his ex wife

I thought his inspiration for fighting (for his son) is sort of relevant

TeenToTwenties · 07/07/2025 08:45

I don't think Naomi was all that maternal anyway, it was Lawrence who seemed to enjoy spending time (and teaching) Angela.

MightyGoldBear · 07/07/2025 08:49

So Esther was just left pregnant and screaming I'll never know what happened to her 🙈

To of rescued hannah would of been too neatly wrapped up so I do get that. Obviously with the testaments too. It all just felt so rushed when we had episode after episode where nothing happened. I almost would of preffered it if say episode 2 or 3 they over powered gilead and then took a longer time to wrap up the story.

Whilst an impossible choice and situation I can't help thinking poor Nicole gets left again. Hannah has been in gilead so long now. Would she even want to be rescued? Or would it feel more like being stolen all over again for her. I think June could of stayed with Nicole and still fought for hannah. Just not on the front line. It wouldn't be a swoop in rescue anyway.

The whole "you should write a book" was a bit on the nose and in our faces. So june and luke have separated?

It was frustrating and left a lot unanswered. I wish they had spent longer on the aftermath rather than the lead up. The first few series were done so well that this didn't feel the ending it deserved.

InterestedBeing · 07/07/2025 08:50

What was the deal with Serena. She wasnt stateless she remained a US citizen. Why couldn't she leave the US on her US citizenship eventually once she had documents.

EmpressaurusKitty · 07/07/2025 08:51

I’d like to have seen what happened to Christina, the handmaid Bell sent to Wharton. I hope she was ok & managed to join in the rebellion.

deeahgwitch · 07/07/2025 08:55

i didn’t get how they could flit in and out of Gilead.
There didn’t appear to be CCTV where you would expect. No trackers on cars ???
i definitely think Tuello was letting Serena know he was single. There was always a bit of frisson there.
As the series went on Elizabeth Moss (June) got more involved in the actual production behind the scenes as an executive producer and director.
Hmmmm
I missed the relevance of Serena’s bed, chair, table and felt Noah really wasn’t enough for her, despite her soliloquy.
Naomi giving back Janine’s child ?
Nah ! I couldn’t see that happening. Although she wasn’t attached to her and was COLD.
Lawerence was so much kinder to the child.
Surely Naomi would want to escape Gilead as would Aunt Lydia.
So many episodes were such a difficult watch, sometimes I wanted to give up watching, but the last episode was a tad underwhelming.

Thank you all on the Handmaid’s Tale threads 💐 you enhanced my viewing of it as I know no one in rl who continued watching so was unable to discuss it with anyone.
