I think it is mentioned briefly in the tv series? As somewhere which will take in Gilead refugees. And it is on the map that someone has shared. I didn’t know why it was separate, couldn’t remember how much it featured in the book so had a bit of an internet look and this Reddit answer is really interesting

I’ve just thought, will Serena, Naomi, Rose and the other commanders wives have to marry again or will Gilead allow them to live in New Bethlehem on their own as widows with children?

For Rose, it would make sense to marry again. She is young and will have a small baby. This would make her more attractive to suitors - having a young, fertile wife would be great for a Commander’s career. I expect that the Marthas come with the Commanders so she would only have “help” if she marries.

Serena has produced a child but she is more of a risk - she is almost outrageously outspoken by Gilead standards (and has a finger missing to show for it). She could be a real asset for a Commander but she could also show him up if she chooses. She is probably the brightest of the three, which may not necessarily be desirable in a Gilead wife.

Naomi has not been fertile (and probably won’t be - the actress is over 50). She wouldn’t be an asset in the way that the other two would but she also won’t be a liability.

I think New Bethlehem will be a Boston experiment that will be judged by the Washington commanders as a disaster, they wouldn't allow the wives to live there in peace, more likely tear it down.
Rose might not have the same status as a high commanders daughter now her father is dead and could be judged for her disability?
Naomi is too old to have her own children so could be married off again with a handmaid.
Rose might be punished for her husband and father's perceived failures and be made a handmaid herself? Who knows.
Serena is a well known pro-Gilead face in Canada so they might not be keen to kill her off.

@BonjourMinou but you are presuming that the Gilead regime will continue, I was hoping this is the beginning of its fall? People are getting fed up with it - we saw at the 'execution' scene the crowd was muttering 'this is wrong' re executing handmaids.

Im struggling with how dark most of it is.

Dark rooms, dark clothes, dimly lit. I can barely see what is happening and its annoying.

Just to say - if any of you are listening to The Eyes of Gilead podcast, the one following episode 9 is full of potential spoilers about The Testaments (and by association, THT). So you may want to give that a miss for now!

They definitely did, they were saying the handmaids are sacred, they shouldn't be killed.

Can't believe I missed that! I think I was too worried for June!
