Clearly the Duggars have managed to be very astute about their finances. There is nothing wrong with not paying taxes if you do so within the rules (which I assume they do). I don't knowingly pay more tax than I have to and don't expect anyone else to do so.
I just meant that the financial aspect is touched on very lightly indeed in the programme so that we really don't know what the real picture is for any of the families. It is pointless to speculate.

AitchTwoCiao · 22/05/2008 22:09

oh, those duggars...

KayHarker · 22/05/2008 22:10

mowahahahaha.

AitchTwoCiao · 22/05/2008 22:11

what? why is it pointless to speculate? is speculation banned now?

findtheriver · 22/05/2008 22:11

So can we all declare our homes and families a church?? I'd quite like to not pay taxes too.

expatinscotland · 22/05/2008 22:12

Oh, yes, MrsH! Let's all play the system to get out of paying taxes at all and brainwash girls and boys to believe women's role in life is to churn out as many babies as possible because that's what God wants.

And if so many doctors tell you you shouldn't have any more kids because it's risky for your health, like Mrs Duggar, who had to work hard to find someone willing to deliver her last time round, well, none of them knows what they're talking about because they're not God.

MsHighwater · 22/05/2008 22:12

OK, I'll rephrase that. IMVHO, it is pointless to speculate.

AitchTwoCiao · 22/05/2008 22:13

apparetnly so. nothing wrong with tax avoidance so long as it's legal.

KayHarker · 22/05/2008 22:13

Well, they're in the US anyway, rules be different there. I think they operate on a male head-of-the-house, priest of the home model of doing things, so I can see the basic logic, although 'tis a bit

expatinscotland · 22/05/2008 22:14

Sure, all whilst courting the media to pay you even more, tax free.

Did they forget that part of the Bible where Jesus said, 'Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto God what is God's'?

MsHighwater · 22/05/2008 22:14

expat, is it not usual to respect the choices other people make even when we don't agree with them (provided the law is not broken).

The IRS could, presumably, have said No, No?

AitchTwoCiao · 22/05/2008 22:15

having declared thmeselves a church... their behaviour is consistent isn't it?

YouNeverKnow · 22/05/2008 22:15

has this been mentioned already??...... the family with 11 the house just looks bit erm dirty?

findtheriver · 22/05/2008 22:15

Right, I declare my home is a church. Doors open 10 o'clock Sunday for morning worship. All welcome

MsHighwater · 22/05/2008 22:16

Tax avoidance goes on all the time and is entirely legal. Tax evasion on the other hand...

KayHarker · 22/05/2008 22:17

Sure, pay the taxes you're legally obliged to. If they're legally in a position they don't have to, apart from being jammy sods, I can't see the problem.

AitchTwoCiao · 22/05/2008 22:17

MsHighwater, have you been on MN before?

expatinscotland · 22/05/2008 22:18

'expat, is it not usual to respect the choices other people make even when we don't agree with them (provided the law is not broken). '

I didn't realise it wasn't permitted to look askance at other peoples' choices, particularly when they go to so much machination to get them. Is that in the MN policy statement?

The IRS is there to comply with the law, MrsH, in fact, part of that means I still have to file tax returns to them every single year.

My daughters will have to as well, even if they decide never to set foot in the place at all. Unless they renounce their nationality at 18 and then they will likely be banned from entering the nation even to visit.

This is not a choice, either, this is by virtue of their mother's being American.

YouNeverKnow · 22/05/2008 22:18

soooo hang on i can choose how much tax i pay? im confused. dont take much at the moment

mrsh.

lol at heffalump.

expatinscotland · 22/05/2008 22:20

oh, even if they renounce, they will still be compelled to file tax returns for 10 years after renunciation.

but let's hear it for everyone who fucks over the system!

i'm taking notes, just make sure you never chime up about MPs and the like fenagling the system to get you and me to pay for their wives to go to Harrod's in a taxi.

YouNeverKnow · 22/05/2008 22:20

lol at anniebear

MsHighwater · 22/05/2008 22:23

expat, just to clarify, it is my opinion that Michelle Duggar is (I believe the saying goes) madder than a box of frogs and am happy to say so. I just believe that she chooses freely to have so many kids.

Despite also being Christian, I don't share their rationale but there you go.

I'm guessing that the IRS must have accepted the contention that the Duggar home qualifies as a church. If the government don't like it, they will have to change the law.
