How do the Scottish ones keep their house so clean and tidy I think the dh seemed quite sweet

KayHarker · 22/05/2008 22:26

fair enough, stupid system. But legit system, none-the-less. I wonder what his tax policy was if he had got elected.

ButterflyMcQueen · 22/05/2008 22:29

i am pg with no 6 and did not like that show

just felt a wee bit production line ish rather than family

all likeable folk but i cant see how the mum/dad can have relationship with that many children

MrsMuddle · 22/05/2008 22:41

Who are these Duggers of whom you all speak? Link please, or more information.

TeenyTinyTorya · 22/05/2008 22:47

I loved the programme - find that sort of thing really interesting. I'm from a family of 6, parents are from families of 5 and 7, and have friends who have 8. I think big families are great - there is always someone to talk to or play with, and it can be a great atmosphere.

I thought Mohammed was absolutely nuts, but seemed like an enthusiastic and involved father - however I felt pretty sorry for Noreen as she just seemed fed up. The other two families seemed a little baby obsessed, but the new baby in the Liverpool family got me all broody

As far as the Duggars go, they seem a lovely family with well-behaved children, they support themselves, and they aren't hurting anyone. Fair play to them. I'd love to have tons of kids, as long as I didn't need to have tons of pregancies.

MsHighwater · 22/05/2008 22:48

This should start you off.

I havent read the whole thread, but am shocked that the Rochdale couple choose to go on reproducing when the childrens basic needs are clearly not being met- no bedding, sleeping on bare matresses, 3 to a bed in school uniforms, state of the house.

And how much individual attention does each child get? Are they given opportunities to follow any interests they may have, do they have help with school work, have they ever been on holiday ?

Someone wiser than me on mn said recently you should have children to have people, and I felt at least one of the women was having children to have babies.

good post frankies

YouNeverKnow · 22/05/2008 22:56

how the hell do the duggas have that house and debt free?

AitchTwoCiao · 22/05/2008 22:58

see, i don't think goiing on holiday is the be all and end all. nor do i think that in a big family, you'd only look to your mum and dad for help.

ButterflyMcQueen · 22/05/2008 22:58

wow that duggar house is so nice!

TeenyTinyTorya · 22/05/2008 23:03

Exactly Aitch - I really enjoyed being a second mum to my younger brothers and sisters, and as we were all home-educated, I got to help with that as well. Everyone mucks in, and while you might not be able to afford as many things as other families, life isn't about money. We never had the latest of anything, but I don't think that's a bad thing. We got to use our imaginations rather than being obsessed with expensive gadgets. There are more positives than negatives for me, but I'm biased

frankiesbestfriend · 22/05/2008 23:07

Not to say of course, that it isn't possible to have that many children and for their needs to be met, as the Liverpool family showed.

Of course going on holiday is not the be all and end all, that was just one example of experiences they might miss out on.

I was more concerned by the obvious neglect, at least in the sense of the childrens practical needs- somewhere warm, dry and comfy to sleep and clean clothes for school etc.

practicalparent · 22/05/2008 23:07

I agree with u TTT! Also I am biased, 1 of 9!

ButterflyMcQueen · 22/05/2008 23:08

The Duggar house is incredible - 2,000 square foot living room - that's bigger than most people's entire house! They actually have a canopy thing in their kitchen with Duggar's Deli and industrial catering equipment - good grief. Not sure about the bit where it describes one of the childen as 'working' in the laundry room.

practicalparent · 22/05/2008 23:12

My house was always warm, comfy - we all had a bed. We all had clean clothes (appearances were of the utmost importance 2my mum) probably because she was all 2aware of how ppl may judge us.

It always amused me how many ppl wud say how suprising it was that we were well turn out and quote "didnt dress/look like gypsies!"

Janni · 22/05/2008 23:22

I spent most of the programme wondering how the first family managed to keep their home so nice and why the second family let the kids draw all over the walls. The Liverpudlian seemed hopelessly obsessed with tiny babies.

I do not understand the need to keep on and on and on having children and would have really appreciated an interviewer who could shed light on this.

AitchTwoCiao · 22/05/2008 23:25

i think i only saw the liverpudlian woman, thought the faily seemed nice. i adored seeing the young kids with their new brother, i'm only one of four but i thought my youngest ds was my dolly and carried her everywhere.

frankiesbestfriend · 22/05/2008 23:26

Maybe because the children don't stay babies and that is what they crave- babies, not actual children.

practicalparent · 22/05/2008 23:35

cud it be that they just have loads of sex?
let's face it how many relationships even when not using contraceptive could manage 2 have as many kids in such quick succession, highly unlikely, many wud be exhausted trying!!

hatwoman · 23/05/2008 10:54

I only have two children and they frequently go to school in unironed/could do with a wash clothes

LazyLinePainterJane · 23/05/2008 14:03

The Simpson family (the ones who were unsure about the cheap PG test) were in the Family section of Saturdays Guardian this week. They were saying that they were doing the programme as they wanted to show that not all large families are people who live off benefits. I think that the DH worked and kept them all. Obviously they would get their child benefits the same as everyone else but as far as I could see, they were not "living" on benefits.

Not sure if annie can confirm that.
